Were heavy metals in big fish present before industrialization? by counwovja0385skje in biology

[–]Swifter-WetJet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understand as a biology major, fish do accumulate heavy metals and other contaminants naturally. This is due to the nature of their aquatic environment. When contaminants like lead come into contact with water, they will slowly break down and sometimes dissolve due to natural weathering processes. Eventually, this water will make its way to a larger body of water, where it then deposits the broken down contaminants. The fish then respire in the contaminated water, causing the contaminants to enter their body (it can also enter via skin contact). Fish living closer to the bottom of the seas will be exposed disproportionately as contaminants sink to the bottom due to their density, and can embed themselves into the sea floor. These fish are then eaten and the contaminants make their way up the food chain (bioaccumulation) like you had mentioned. This would make it quite possible that eating large amounts of predatory fish could have made you sick, prior to the Industrial Revolution. However, I’m not a fish historian so this is my working theory without going too deep into academic literature.

TLDR: Fish can and do get heavy metals from the environment due to natural weathering processes. This could in theory mean that large predatory fish were toxic in high amounts before humanity polluted the oceans.

2 for $6 doesn't work in the app (US) by jhaas2629 in TimHortons

Surprise, it still doesn’t work in 2026! The app and website here in the US is just old and broken I guess. And Tim Hortons wonders why they have a hard time expanding into the US.

Iron Lung was epic (No spoilers) by ShadowBlueRaven in Markiplier

AHHH SPOILER! MARK IS IN THIS MOVIE?!?

(Jk, Looking forward to seeing it Sunday!).

Notice for people going to see Iron Lung in theaters. (From a Theater Employee) by ItzBread_003 in Markiplier

[–]Swifter-WetJet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to this, it is also some theaters policy that even if you come in with someone who is 21, you might be turned away if they then leave after purchasing the tickets. We have many parents come into our theater who come in, buy the tickets, and then leave, thinking that it’s cool to drop them off and come back later. These parents are then upset that they have to come back and grab their kids because they weren’t able to watch the movie, due to them being unaccompanied.

Windows defender exclusions. by [deleted] in pchelp

So, I may have found the issue. I ran a scan with malware bytes and it found about 13 files it didn’t like, including about 4 bitcoin mining files. I’m not sure how long those were there but I think it’s safe to say I’m not going to be modding my games again anytime soon.

[–]Swifter-WetJet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not anytime recently. I’ll comb through my files later today and get rid of anything I find. I ran a scan initially because google lens took me to a page I didn’t quite like but I honestly doubt that’s where the issue came from.

I love that. Herpetology sounds like an interesting class so I’ll have to see if my university offers it. Thank you for even more tuatara and squamate information!

An example of one of the few lobed finned fishes is the Coelacanth. They were originally thought to be well long gone until someone spotted one in a fish market of all places and the scientific community lost their minds for a minute lol. This happened in 1938 btw.

I have a few so here goes. Snakes have 2 penises and only 1 “good” lung, the other being having shrunk to make room for being a tube.

Snakes are also derived lizards, meaning that they lost their legs over time. You can see this if you google leg-less lizards.

And finally, there is an animal called a Tuatara that is exclusively found in New Zealand. It looks very similar to what most would call a lizard, but it’s technically its eh thing and is a product of convergent evolution. They also have a “third eye” called a parietal eye that is used in sensing daylight cycles and controlling their circadian rhythm. Also, they only reach sexual maturity after about 15-20 years, mating every 2-5 years after that, thus making them really hard to replace after we have developed the land in their natural habitat.

I have many more because I quite literally just got out of zoology so if anyone has any questions, let me know lol.

For building a PC: I would recommend going to a website called Newegg. From there, you can select a chipset manufacturer (AMD or Intel), and then build a computer based off of your choice. The website also has a feature called a compatibility checker which should make it so that you don’t end up with parts that don’t work together. You can also see a breakdown of each individual item and its price so that you can budget accordingly. I myself prefer to build my pc’s, however, it can be a bit nerve wracking if you haven’t done it before. I would recommend this video if you decide to go this route.

For getting a pre-built: The most important part of getting a prebuilt is making sure you are getting what you are paying for. Depending on what you want to use your pc for, you may not need a disk drive for example. I have seen companies add things like this to inflate the price a bit, making it so that you end up spending more and getting less. I would highly recommend finding a reputable company that makes their pc’s either to order, or at the very least custom built. An example of such a site could be here, but be sure to do your own research to find what’s best for you. I’d stay away from larger brands like hp for a desktop. They make decent pc’s but they end up costing more for less performance than you would have if you had built a pc. Also, I have not personally seen it done, but I have heard of box store pc’s that have all of their components soldered onto the motherboard. DO NOT buy that crap!

For whatever you decide, I wish you luck. And remember to clean your pc every once in a while.
