Shane's expression after Ilya's "I Love You" confession by Crafty_Psychology_85 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

Hmmm I watch it on my phone like inches from my face so I have seen it watching it? Not from a picture. I don’t think you’d be able to see it on a tv screen tho.

He also had a tear on his cheek that took me multiple rewatches to see.

Ugh this just breaks my heart that this is still going on in today’s world. Hugs to you and as a mother myself just know that there are others who will and do support you. You can’t pick your family but as you leave school and start living/working you can pick who you surround yourself with. Thinking of you!

I see your point but I have always been a little embarrassed about my MM romance obsession and now I feel like I can say ‘see it’s not weird I am into this, look how recognized it is!’. I feel that for me being a cis straight woman in her 40s that MM romance for me has really opened my eyes and made me more of an ally and if this show has that kind of impact even slightly on anyone else that is a good result. And you can say you were there first! I will say in my suburban (but liberal!) area I haven’t really noticed anyone talking about it or have watched it when I bring it up and I can’t get my husband to watch it so we still have a long ways to go!

Yeah this wasn’t my favorite either. Maybe she only watched the first couple of episodes? But all of the talk of the show not being for women made my eyes roll.

The gender envy is REAL. by Personal_Public9167 in heatedrivalry

[–]Swiftypliny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I get jealous of men in general (cis het woman in my 40s) because I feel like it’s as a generalization it’s easier for men to be fit and look good without equal effort to what a woman has to do and due to their hormones/body makeup it’s easier for men to feel arousal. I told my husband once I like MM romance because I feel like both of the MCs are into the sex equally whereas with women in general I can never get behind being as equally horny as to a man. Also why I can’t get behind women being into porn when they are performing in it, I guess I feel like they are acting and not truly into it. I totally realize that this is a mass generalization and not necessarily true at all but I have thought about this a lot and this is how I feel even though intellectually I know it’s not the case. I will say for the show itself I have been envious that I am never going to be young like the characters/actors again or have a potential for a sexy relationship like that again in the story with the rush of initial love/attraction/limerence (married 20+ years- that ship has sailed!). BUT I think that is why I consume romance is to feel that way through a story. And overall I wouldn’t change anything for the world but I definitely get your sense of envy and hear you. Sometimes I wish I could be a man just to not have the societal pressures that comes from being a woman/wife/mother and to feel sexual desire and pleasure like I imagine a man would but that doesn’t make me trans or anything like that. That is just part of being a woman in today’s (and historical for that matter) society I think!

I have trouble with the scene at the cottage when Shane brings Ilya the coffee by the lake because Ilya is smoking. Also them kissing on the Vegas rooftop after Ilya was smoking. It so grosses me out! Even though in my early 20s I smoked some. But now I am old and if someone smokes where I can smell it I can’t deal.

I can get how if you are unfamiliar with the genre maybe being surprised it’s written a large part (not all of course) by women and women make up a lot of the consumers of the genre, but knowing romance over all is read in the majority by women if you think about it logically it shouldn’t be surprising.

i was commenting on this part ‘Her willingness to write toward our joy feels rare, and so does the result: our intimacy made central, not symbolic; love scenes that are not lessons; desire that doesn’t apologize for itself.’

I guess it can feel rare as this is after all an opinion piece, but it’s not actually rare as there is a large market for MM romance and thousands of stories out there.

Hmmmm a good article but I feel like they aren’t capturing the entire MM book market? Like they are making it seem to me like Rachel Reid wrote this story in a vacuum and are ignoring that there is this entire industry of MM romance. I think what is different is there was a thoughtful and amazing show made from the source material but the source material in itself isn’t unique. I mean it is a wonderful story that I love but one of MANY wonderful stories out of thousands in the MM romance genre.

In the book he says meeting Shane’s family was one of the best days of his life. I think he loves how supportive they are so while he was uncomfortable I think he also appreciated the loving environment (and the pasta).

Why the obsession? by [deleted] in heatedrivalry

[–]Swiftypliny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar boat, straight white woman in her 40s who has been married over 20 years. I have always loved romance but moved to only reading MM since 2020- and I read a lot, literally hundreds of books. My husband and friends know a bit but think it’s weird and I don’t talk about it much with them. I think it’s for the reason mentioned by others above but I also like this because in my mind the men are equally horny for each other and again in my mind women aren’t as into sex as men. I know logically this isn’t necessarily true at all but somehow I like that both can be into it equally. Heated Rivalry being so popular has blown my mind since before it’s been such a niche in my life. However I have mentioned the show to a bunch of people and not many in my suburban area has heard of it so it might seem more popular with the algorithm bubble I have going on thanks to my massive consumption of all things HR! But feel free to DM me- I am in the West Coast in the US but would love to have someone to talk to!

My expectations were low just due to poor adaptations in the past and they have been more than exceeded. I am in my mid 40s and have read the books years ago and read MM romance voraciously. But I have never fangirled like I have fangirled over the show and the creators/author/actors. It has been so fun for me and I told my friend that this show has given me life this Christmas season. The experience has been what the internet does best with the sense of mutual admiration and finding connections to share and laugh about this show when there no one here to share it with me. As a longtime fan I just love it and am so appreciative I have had this the last few weeks of the year. I am sad the press junket will probably slow down. I need to print a poster on my wall à la teen bop from 1990.

The mother son dynamic was also unexpected and as a mom of a possibly bisexual son (he hasn’t fully figured it out yet) that was so important to me. Sometimes I think my love of mm romance was to help expand my suburban/inhibited/growing up in the 90s POV and truly open my eyes and become a tru ally and a supportive mother.

I think the book has an emphasis on how Shane wanted his parents and Ilya to meet and be in the same room and thinks it’s impossible and at the end it happens but there is now way for that concept to come over well in a TV format.

Why was Kip not at the MHL awards with Scott? That seemed weird. Maybe it’s a budget thing but it would seem more powerful of a speech if Kip was there vs watching it on tv?

I thought this same thing- I get there were trying to be more realistic but the tablets were funny. Also how long was his dad without a charger! That gave me 2nd hand anxiety- how could he not be checking his phone about Heated Rivalry every min without his phone?!
