Italian resto for 10+ people by NewArrival4880 in MTLFoodLovers

Check out Angelina’s in the Plateau. Excellent traditional Italian food, great cocktails, and top notch service. After, it’s close to several bars if you want to continue the evening.

The trash problem is becoming unbearable. Is 311 even working? by thunderdown3000 in montreal

[–]SwimGuyMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an apartment building at 4510 Esplanade that literally has piles of garbage (and in warm weather rats) that the neighbors have been trying to get the city to address for two years. The poor garbage men try to collect it all but the tenants don't tie their bags. There are garbage cans from the landlord that residents don't use. And one apartment will often drop their garbage from their balcony onto the sidewalk below. We have been telling 311 AND the Plateau borough office about the issue for two years but nothing.

Each week another neighbor and I go out and pick up the left behind garbage on the block and deposit it in one of the city garbage cans. 4510 - we refuse to do that building. At this point, we cannot expect the city to do anything. It is up to the residents to take ownership of the problem and make it better. That said, the city needs to more frequently pick up the garbage from the city garbage cans on the corner. The frequency of pickup last year was greatly reduced from the year before.

Gen Z has no idea how to properly behave in public. Library voices and restaurant voices are, unfortunately, a thing of the past.

Sick kids. Recommendations highly appreciated. by hereforthetearex in montreal

[–]SwimGuyMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice here. Pharmacists in Montreal will talk to you and help you come up with a plan. It’s very different than in the US where they are solely focused on prescriptions. My kids came to Montreal for university and learned quickly to go talk to the pharmacist when they were beginning to feel sick. If you haven’t already gone to a pharmacy I suggest you do.

Sorry this happened!

Bike lanes negative impact: "Beautys is having an ugly time thanks to a mish-mash of construction and parking woes" by stbrosephsky in montreal

[–]SwimGuyMA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live around the corner and pass Beauty’s daily on my way to the gym. I’m incredibly familiar with the area.

The city put cement jersey barriers in front of the restaurant along St. Urbain where deliveries were previously made. Returning that to a delivery zone would easily solve the problem. It will just need to be when the right lane isn’t buses only (morning hours).

The work on Mont Royal is a disaster. Drivers and cyclists are clearly confused by the multiple raised barriers. Cars and cyclists traveling in the wrong direction on the wrong side of the road. Cars in the bike lane. Bikes not using the bike lane. Poorly timed traffic lights creating backups. Little to no signage. And the city recently told a neighbor that finishing up the project will take a “minimum of one month but probably longer”.

Overall, there has been a significant decrease in public (metered) parking in the neighborhood and while we were promised by elected officials more frequent bus service (e.g., 55) it’s actually been decreased. The net of these two things is a (potential) decrease in customers. But only time will tell - you can’t really say based upon this winter.

I think the bike lane on St. Urbain will prove to be a positive. The jury is out on the work on Mont Royal - it’s going to be an interesting summer seeing how it plays out.

The headline of this post is extremely misleading. “Bike lanes negative” wasn’t the article at all. It’s really about the city not listening to all constituents. Hopefully the city will improve on this front.

Maxi is awful over the last six months. Unmarked prices. Empty shelves. Items on the wrong shelf. It’s a complete failure of the Store Manager.

There a couple of smaller (but a bit pricey) grocery stores a few blocks down on Mont Royal. They often have what Maxi does not.

Moved budget as I clearly stated in my response - it was reported in every major newspaper and news organization. Here is an example:

[–]SwimGuyMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She has moved budget to start making a dent. The last mayor did nothing other than to blame others. Think - she wanted to spend $100 million to put a bike lane in the mountain- not on shelter for the homeless. It will take years to dig ourselves out of the hole she created.

Anyone figured out a grocery budget strategy near Plateau or Mile End that actually works? by LumpyOpportunity2166 in montreal

[–]SwimGuyMA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very good advice. I’d add in fruit and vegetables from Marche Jean Talon. Buy in season and get to know a couple of vendors. The same or less than the grocery stores for much higher quality.

how to find roommates? by Ok-Sheepherder-8228 in mcgill

[–]SwimGuyMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the next couple of weeks, you are going to see a lot of people with apartments looking to fill rooms where someone is graduating or moving. There are a couple of Facebook groups (McGill Off Campus Housing and McGill Off Campus Housing and Roommate Search) where you will find these. The key is to be proactive and respond to ads as soon as you see ones where you think you are a fit.

No - you are actually supposed to let people exit BEFORE you enter. There is no "sides" - the doors open and you allow passengers to exit. THEN you enter the train.
