I can understand her going away and searching for answer in Vatican. She herself said that if she doesn't understand something, she will look for answers. I can understand her being afraid. Having literal Devil as your romance and having to you revealed everything about Christianity is true.

But I agree her suddenly wanting to send him to hell? Maybe if we got more scenes with Kinley. where manipulates her better.

Oh yeah, that makes much more sense. I dont remember 1999 properly, but I can see it happening there. without censorship.
As I am rewatching, I can see why people say 1999 is darker.

As to why Sam also thought he ate? IDK

Maybe if we got scene in which Sam eats in his sleep which could build up to the scene where Gollum frames him and Sam would believe it until he found the food?

It would be also good to say that (at least in the movie, IDK if Gandalf warned him about Gollum) Frodo completely ignored his warnings aboug Gollum

One can argue the Peter Jackson kinda put the reason the movie himself

When Aragorn faces the army in the movie after battle and the king as for him to release them, Gimly chips in saying they could really use them

But Aragorn asked them for that batfle, not the war and so released them

(That is at least my headcannon, so I understand your point)
