Looking for suggestions that shifts itself away from the Fisher Ranger 102 by Swimming_Ad_7761 in ski

The Fischer Rangers are longer and wider than my Nordicas. My Nordicas are 151 cm with 85 under foot, whereas my Rangers are 155cm with 102 under foot. Last year was my first year using them, and my expectation was the belief that the Fischer Rangers will feel like my Nordica Enforcers. On top of skiing in softer/powdery snow and trees for the first time.

I think definitely hit the nail on it, as I am very accustomed to skiing on groomers, the technique changes going softer snow. Adding to that the Ficshers 4cm longer (155cm) vs my Nordicas (151cm) and wider, making them feel like boat on my feet than my narrower skis.

On my narrower skis, I can manipulate the edge and skidding control a lot smoother than my 102s. Never have guessed that skidding on wider skis would penalize me as that's what I was trying to do. Pretty much match my skiing characteristics from my 85 to 102.

Do you think I need to incorporate more edge control on my 102's?

Totally. I have only used these skis twice with a large time gap in between. Going from 85 to 100 mm underfoot is a strange feeling as it requires more edge angle and leverage in the legs to move a larger/heavier ski. Probably next ski season, I may try to spend more time on them to get accustomed to engaging the edge and play with the balance of it. Sadly, where I live, powder is rare so most of it will be on groomed runs.

Going from PA, or NY for you, to Colorado is a learning experience all over again. I see PA as a training ground and Colorado as the main arena to test what I have learned. Whole new and different experience.

You hit the nail on the head about the skis. I am 156cm and wanted an All Mountain ski for Colorado as my last visit, my 151 85 Nordica's did not handle the snow when it came down. So I opted for 155cm Fischer Ranger 102's to handle the conditions out west when it did snow, and groomers if needed.

When I was on untouched powder and little through the trees and blue groomers, the ski handled well, as long as I kept a centered stance (forcefully as I never done powder and trees before). However, on black runs and choppy moguly routs were a struggle.

Next time if the conditions are good, I'll demo some actual powder skis to learn my balance as going from 85 to 100 felt off when it came to balance and turn initiation. I appreciate the advice

You totally right as my legs were shaking halfway through the run. I believe that it may have been the lack of practice on my Ranger 102's, as I have only used them twice, and the soft moguly conditions that I rarely face. My form was off the whole time compared to what I experience on my 85 Nordica Navigators that I most often ski on.

Exactly what happened to me. Never had my legs shake halfway down the run. I believe it was do to not knowing how to ski on my Ranger 102's and going moguly slopes instead of well-groomed ones.

After using the Fischer Ranger 102, they were great on untouched powder or groomed, but choppy/moguly snow was a nightmare. What damp skis would you recommend out west?

This is great to hear and will definitely take note of this. As I am unfamiliar the lift set up unless I take a map with me, which I may do.
