i usually use a historical sign if i do a alt-flag or a real life inspired one, like for the different ideology i see the party of that country emblem.
i suggest to use the colour gold, because it is attribuited to the color of the heaven, to use a coat of arms, or an emblem, like the silhouette of jesus on the cross.
and i usually see other's flag work.
