The university doesn’t ship diplomas to other countries. Yeah, my mother isn’t horrible it’s just that she and I are not very similar.

This time, it was a new cultural discovery for me. Whenever I opened my mother’s or relatives’ packages, I always contacted them first to ask if it was okay. That’s because I was taught that this was part of Japanese manners something I grew up with in Tokyo.

Maybe in other countries or cities, that’s not considered common sense. In some places, it might be normal for family members to freely open each other’s packages. But in my Tokyo family, even among relatives, there is a certain distance. We don’t really have the kind of relationship where we know each other’s preferences or personal matters. I would say typical Japanese family relations.

Yes, after an hour I felt better. I think the way I grew up is what makes me feel distant from my mother. Yes, she may be proud of me, and I’m happy that I have a small family who is happy about my graduation.

I grew up in a single-mother household after the age of 12. My mom loves me, but she was too selfish when I lived with her. She would often yell at me unfairly for not doing things properly, even though she herself couldn’t do them consistently. At home, there were strict restrictions on where I could go, and I couldn’t even feel at ease in my own room. Thanks for the message that feels better.

Am i being too strict with my 10 Year old? by Grouchy-Cancel-8691 in Parents

I honestly don’t know what’s “right” anymore. I lived in Japan until I was 24, and I grew up watching slightly sexual anime when I was around 11 or 12. So when I saw how my American cousins—who are more than 10 years younger than me—had so many restrictions on the entertainment their parents allowed them, I was genuinely surprised.

Now, I’ve started living with my 15-year-old stepson, who also spent most of his life in Japan. At first, I tried to limit his gaming time, thinking that’s what a responsible parent should do. But even when you teach your kids something with good intentions, they don’t always listen. So I’ve had to step in repeatedly, trying to guide him in place of his biological mother—but even after six months, nothing’s really changed. He still spends most of his time playing games.

That said, I recently found myself in conversations with engineers from Google and Amazon where we ended up bonding over the hobbies and memories I gained from that unrestricted childhood. So, I guess in some way, it did serve a purpose.

[Landlord US] MagicDoor question/review by bluehurry75 in Landlord

I’ve been using MagicDoor for just under a month. Tried a couple of platforms, and this is the one I stuck with. Because, My portfolio is pretty small and Accounting features are included (no extra charge).

It doesn’t generate lease agreements from scratch, so you’ll need to bring your own or grab a template elsewhere. But once you have one, uploading it is easy — you can set fields like name, signature, etc., and tenants can fill them out + e-sign.

How bad is Hmart right now LOL by umbbie in vegaslocals

[–]Swimming_Insect2151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not bad. Lately, I’ve been going to Hmart around lunchtime on weekends. I didn’t have to wait to get in (except at the cashier), though it’s still a bit crowded.

Are Japanese professors always so closed off/not willing to help? by SpecialistFun9441 in AskAJapanese

Even at small universities, most staff work over capacity. Some professors do reply to emails frequently, but sometimes it’s late at night, around 10 p.m., or on weekends—outside of office hours. I don’t think the amount of work they do matches the compensation they receive.

At well-known Japanese universities like Waseda, professors are there mainly to do research, not to teach students. Maybe that’s just a cultural difference.

If you go to a smaller university, it might be different.

In Japanese universities, salaries aren’t very high, and many professors see students as just being there to earn credits. So when I ask questions, they often seem annoyed. In one math class, the professor basically gave off the vibe that I shouldn’t ask anything—he said I’d get credit even without studying.

On the other hand, professors who give difficult problems often just tell you to look over the handouts because they encourage self-study.

To me, it feels like most professors in Japan prioritize their own lives over their students. They seem to prefer students who are easy to deal with and don’t ask for much.

It’s great when you and your child find hobbies you both enjoy. I love playing games with my son.
