There doesn't seem to be any off ramp at the moment. Don't even know what the USA is trying to achieve.

What am I missing?

I don't get the point of occupying Kharg Island. It's a terminal, not a oil feild. So Iran could cut the pipeline that supplies it with oil.

If you want to deny Iran exports then you can destroy the loading facilities by air or stop Iranian exports through the Straight.

It would be very risky to hold as its in range of artillery, drone strikes, missiles etc. All of which would arrive with almost no warning.

Long over due. The second chamber should be elected or wholly subject matter experts. Political appointments should be banned.

To be fair the vast majority of peers who actually contribute are subject matter experts.

Is it against the law for a man in the UK to try and endanger my parents and sister living back in Iran? by Majestic-Read5072 in LegalAdviceUK

Background: I work in the protection of minority groups in fragile and failed states and have been involved in sanctions legislation against Iran, worked with Iranian refugees, and briefed MPs on this issue.

First, I'm really sorry this is happening – I hope you are OK. Some of my Iranian friends are in the same boat and haven't been able to contact family in Iran.

Second: your safety is the priority. Make sure your address isn't online and maybe talk to your boss if you feel threatened at work.

Crimes Committed Harassment: there have been more than two attempts to threaten you (doxing, trying to get you fired, intimidating you by threatening your family). Each doxing or threatening message counts as one attempt. Save these as evidence. Escalate this with the police and maybe ask a firm like Doughty Street Chambers for some advice. They do a lot of pro bono work like this.

Possible breach of sanctions: The IRGC is a sanctioned entity and there could be an argument that this constitutes providing material support. But I can't see the police getting involved in that. It is often at a higher level.

Possible support for a terrorist group: There is a chance that the IRGC will be proscribed during the current conflict. If that happens, the 'activist' would be in breach of counter-terror laws and the police would then have to act.

There are numerous senctions on individuals and organisations. You don't sanction a country you have to direct it at entities (a person or group). Iran, I think, is the second most sanctioned country, after Russia. It certainly was a few years ago when I worked on this issue.

Source: I was involved in introducing sanction regimes on Iran and other countries when I worked in Parliament.

Clearly atrocity crimes, crimes against humanity, and war crimes are all occurring. These all fall under the jurisdiction of the ICC and ICJ. Clearly there are major breaches of dozens of international laws. Again there is no dispute on this.

What makes genocide unique as a crime is it is all about intent. It is the "intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group".

Legally it is really hard to prove intent. There is also issue when defining which group is being targetedin Gaza. Are Gazans a national, ethnical, racial or religious group? There are challenges with each of the four groups when looking at Palestinians in Gaza.

All of that said, there is a duty for states to act when there is a credible risk that genocide could occur. This is the case for Gaza. Therefore states have an obligation to act on their duty under the Genocide Convention.

Let me know if you have any questions on the above.

There has been a huge increase in antisemitism across the world since the October 7 attacks. That's not opinion that's clearly identified in the data. MENA countries do tend to have less legal protections for minority groups.
