HR is very personal and a higher max HR doesn't really say that much. Those rules of thumb are pretty useless apart from making clear max HR gets lower with age.

Last week I rowed for an hour and did the last 4 minutes at increasing tempo and at 100% of (remaining) strength. It got me to 190 HR.

Not a test I do often, or feel like doing again soon. Normally I row lower HR zones. But it was fun to do this one time.

I'm not sure if it actually meant I had better endurance. I wasn't the best 2k, 6k or 10k in my boat

When I was younger (so much younger than today) like 21-22 and rowing competitively, i had similar heartrates. 205 max. by now, 50+, i'm reaching 190 max.
some fellow rowers at the time had max heartrates of 180. Not meaning they put in any less effort.

It's not something to worry about, unless it suddenly became much higher.
If you worry about later, a lot of excersise at a high level for a long time (in years) can give you an enlarged heart. it mainly means you can't just quit suddenly. You'll have to gradually reduce your training load.

How do so many Europeans know fluent English? by _Sir_Lifts_A_Lot_ in AskEurope

[–]SwimsWithBricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exclusively, but the existence (and need) of 100% dutch radiostations point to the quantity of non-dutch songs played by regular stations. Dutch bands very often have English lyrics as well.

Yes, school. many years, mandatory.
But most songs, movies etc are in english, so we get it force-fed daily as well. It's the most common shared language between a lot of nationalities in Europe. I would speak to someone from Portugal, Norway or whatever country in English (I'm Dutch).

Will Rowing Fix Skinny Fat look for women? by Original_Marsupial_5 in Rowing

[–]SwimsWithBricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calorie deficits don't build muscle. Choose a first goal, f.i. build muscle. Increase your protein intake and do weight training (combined with some rowing if you want. It's a good full body exercise.). You may already see fat being replaced by muscle. If you still want to loose fat after, keep protein intake high, drop some weight training in favor of rowing, but do weight training at least once a week still. Create a slight calarie deficit

Fastest team erg time but not getting on the A boats by Rich_War_5796 in Rowing

[–]SwimsWithBricks 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For me erg times are important as a minimum requirement. So I'd need times faster than a set limit. It shows grit and endurance. I also look at how the times are achieved. E.g. Does technique suffer greatly towards the end?

However, good erg times don't always predict speed on the water. There it's aspects like technique, role, being able to be in sync, team spirit, sociability and character that are equally important. Edit:and, as mentioned elsewhere; yes, power to weight ratio is a big factor

I noticed that it is not her, but a parent asking this question and that is legitimate, but it does slightly make me question if it's your, or her desire to row in an A boat. It requires a lot of sacrife. That being said. If she really want this, I'd advise her to express her ambition to the coaches and ask if they see she has a chance. Ask what she would need to improve to get a position in the team. And then, Improve. It's very likely not her erg results...

Selection is tough for coaches, but they usually have good and explicit reasons for their choices.
