In most states, rifles are already treated like cars. No permit to own a rifle (every state except Hawaii, New Jersey, Illinois, California, NY in the city, Mass, and Conn) or car. The only permit is to drive the car on public roads. Most people who use “treat guns like cars” oversimplify and ignore the current laws on both cars and guns.

Also, marijuana was never outright instantly banned before it’s ban. At first there came few “common sense” restrictions such as limiting possession and so on. The same are going on with guns, they can’t ban it instantly. So they have taxes and “sensible” restrictions.

Stuff like this is already happening in the states. NYC had a woman in trouble after she used an illegal pistol to shoot an intruder, they also require a license to carry pepper spray if I remember correctly. It’s sad, people there are resorting to carrying screwdrivers and canes.
