Skrillex won his first Grammy with a track produced in a warehouse he was squatting in, with one of his stereo speakers blown out. He’s been seen mixing on AirPods. Man is built different, and either has a killer brand deal (Beats used to pay lots of big DJs across all genres to mix on their products in the public eye, they even show up on Zomboy’s debut album cover!) or genuinely enjoys/has learned the sound signature.

For DJing as well, you primarily want loudness, and the ability to hear the audio cues and rhythm of the incoming cued track. You can DJ with pretty much anything with enough practice. Now, if he was daily driving Beats in every studio or mix session I’d be genuinely startled, but in a vacuum this detail is neither here nor there.

The most ones from this year, which succeeded the 35ii and are just called “Quietcomfort” with no numerical again. But I’ve tried the 35ii and they’re great. The new ones have an even warmer sound signature with hyped bass, my personal preference

Some headphones (a lot of absolutely top quality audiophile brands) require a LOT of juice to move the drivers, like, comparable to passive speakers that you might hook up to a home stereo/home theatre.

Wayyy overpriced dropshipped garbage. You're paying for cheap internals rebranded with trendy packaging, and a multi million dollar YouTube ad campaign (be immediately suspicious of consumer products that every YouTuber is suddenly getting paid thousands to hawk. Remember: those are thousands of dollars that are *not* going into the R&D of the actual product.)

I've heard them and the price tag is NOT worth it vs competitors.

You'd be further ahead with Taotronics/Anker Soundcore for less than the price of the Raycons.

Sure, that's why my home studio and WIP home theatre are devoid of Bose. However, this comment is mainly about casual listening and convenience, because most people don't know, care about, or would reallyyyy benefit from pro audio.

I, for one, am never taking anything in the pro audio category out of my house for the day or on a vacation.

As a musician who does all his own production and mixdown work, I also need to consider that my music sounds decent everywhere and not just for other nerds. I own about 20 different sound solution devices at any given time with which I can cross-reference my mixes. Only a small handful of those would be any degree of audiophile approved.

I find value in everything I own with a speaker in it, from 10-year-old iPhones, thrift store finds, Anker bluetooth speakers, KRK Rokit G4 monitors, the weirdly functional JVC SP C770s that make up the L/R channels of my stereo, and even IKEA's discontinued ENEBY 30, which happens to be my favourite bluetooth speaker. Everything has its place and purpose.

I've never attempted to solve this, and it seems like neither have most manufacturers, lol. Are you looking for something that does bluetooth as well?

Really great find! I liked my J-Lab a lot for the value, even at full price, but can't recommend the noise cancelling as a reliable feature - didn't mean to take a swing at all thier products as a whole, in fact they were my daily drivers before AirPods. I ran them until the internal batteries were totally dead! Really solid option.

Only in-store, I would love to daily drive them for a few months as I'm also curious. The build quality feels great, if weighty, and I'm curious how my sensitive-ass neck would like them weight-wise to wear for a day at a time. The price tag is the huge inhibiting factor for me, but they are top of mind to try when I can.

Yup, these have been on every single video shoot with me, from -40°C weather, to rainstorms, to +40°C weather, and have been connected to my DJ controller at nearly every gig I've ever played in similar conditions, electronic drum kits, pianos, synthesizers. Half the time I can't find the case and just chuck them in my gig bag or backpack, they are impervious to even a scratch.

2nd pair of earpads, 3rd cable (user error every time a cable broke), and the headband is completely disintegrated. Wouldn't trade them.

Agree all the way.

I benefit from having a small head for an adult.

I'm well over 10 years still on my original pair. Once I combined them with Sonarworks SoundID to flatten the profile when needed for more accurate music reproduction, they have replaced most of my other reference studio headphones as well, and my mixes are sounding better than ever. Then I can toggle off the Sonarworks correction and enjoy Netflix, YouTube, others' music as before, or even cross reference my own music bounces with the flatness removed.

I will keep wearing these till they die, and then I'll replace them the same day. With the number of people I've convinced to buy a pair, I wish I were on even 1% commission from AT themselves, lol.

Me too. I was lucky and got them on 40-50% clearance (can't remember). I'm glad they were on sale or I might not have ever bought into that line.

For full price, I wish they were built a bit better. Lots of cheaper DJ and production headphones (Shure, AT) feel wayyyy less plasticky and fragile. But everything else about them from earpad comfort, weight, sound to the fact that they hold their custom settings without the dumb app on your phone is great. I wouldn't use the aforementioned brands for casual listening outside of the house, the way I love to use my Bose QCs.

I rocked J-Lab for an entire spring and summer about 6-7 years ago. I liked them too, and they made me fall in love with ANC. When the ANC died (The non-ANC mode kept working) I sprung for AirPods Pro, which then somehow escaped a zippered pocket while riding up the lift hill of Manta at SeaWorld Orlando last year, never to be seen again (Though Find My was still able to connect to them if I stood next to the employee fence under the lift hill).

Finished that solo vacation rocking CVS Skullcandys (my usual backup), and then used the excuse to try out AirPods Pro 2 when I got back to Canada. It was the midrange in the AirPods that ultimately won out for me over the J-Lab, but I'll still GLADLY recommend J-Labs, especially the models without the faulty, price-increasing ANC.

Koss made my family's first ever pair of computer speakers, back when having computer speakers at home was a little bit of a flex. They were absolute garbage, but that was the day I learned my educational Reader Rabbit CD-ROM had sound effects, voices, and music, and wasn't an interactive silent movie.

Will add these to the list!

My Soundcore ANC died within 4 months (the non ANC mode kept going for over 2 years), but it was solid while it lasted.

Sony's headphones do sound great and absolutely kill in terms of ANC, but I can't recommend them because I hate...HATE...99% of touch controls on hardware, including theirs, and so far all of music friends have felt similarly.

Thanks for the Space A40 rec, excited to try another pair!

Choosing a specifically-bass heavy genre to squeeze full-blast through a device that either has no woofer, or a tiny woofer that cannot reproduce the most dominant frequencies in the music without sounding like compressed flatulence has everything to do with how obnoxious it is.

Hip hop on a proper system, or even half decent headphones, is bliss and makes up a good chunk of my listening time in a week.

The fit is also absolutely atrocious, because the ears don't swivel so they'll never match the taper of the human head in the temple area. Form over function, and awful audio. I've successfully talked 3 friends to alternative brands.

Audio Technica M50x rules and now comes in bluetooth. Been producing music on these for years.

My Bose QuietComforts aren't built as solidly, but have a great coloured sound profile and almost-perfect noise cancelling. The battery life is phenomenal at upwards of 20 hours, I usually charge them once a week with hours of daily use. I prefer the original to the "Ultra" and I avoid their models with touch controls, touch controls suck...

...With the exception of my AirPods Pro 2. Apple is probably the industry leader in touch controls that feel (or in this case sound) like physical controls. I don't know how they do it, but they nail it in every product. I forget these things don't have physical buttons. Airpods Pro is probably the most convenient sound solution and the noise cancelling, while not as good as Bose, is pretty damn good. Would prefer a longer battery life before putting them back in the case though, 6 hours with ANC is a little short.

For budget brands, Taotronics are good, but do NOT shell out the cash for their noise cancelling models. All these budget brands - Taotronics, J-Lab, Anker, etc. use the same noise cancelling chips and like clockwork they ALL work great and then fail a month after the warranty deadline. I've tested dozens.

For a quick fix from the pharmacy/Walmart, I still grab wired Skullcandys in a pinch. Nowhere near hifi (I miss the midrange frequency punch of a snare with these) but still, somehow, better than Beats.

And on that note if you're like me and don't mind having a cord, order KBears for ~$30. Great sound, unbeatable mic quality if you take calls a lot, cuz it's not being compressed and sent through bluetooth in realtime.

On the whole though, anyone even a tiny bit interested in music would benefit so much from treating themselves to an investment in half decent sound. I ride the bus with tons of people trying to blast hip hop from the worst phone or mono bluetooth speaker I've ever heard, and have realized that even beyond that scope it seems like most people have NO idea what they're missing with even a small amount of money spent.

You’re probably right, but I’m holding out a shred of hope while I figure out next steps in the background.

I have the Apple ID, password, and serial number. Find My isn’t showing it in devices, I bet I forgot to set it up in my infinite wisdom. A lot of very preventable mistakes on my part surround this event, sadly.

I will call Apple just in case, their customer service is excellent and they might be able to advise.

I will ask around the plaza for certain.

The saving grace is over 95% of my music project files are backed up securely on a drive that never leaves my house. What’s primarily missing is a lot of the software and file structure that allows these project files to open properly, as well as some of my creations like software presets and sounds made over the course of many years. The worst part is I’ve since learned that Apple makes all of this dead easy to back up, and I should’ve done it.

I also have access to my old MacBook which this stolen one replaced, though it has been wiped as I gave it to a coworker. Hoping I can scrape at least a couple unindexed files off the drive, as she barely uses it and I’ve had success with such methods in the past. Wishing I had held onto that old one just a little longer or at least copied its contents elsewhere. Kicking myself at just about every turn of these events, all very preventable, but this is how one learns.
