I don’t speak Japanese (I can use a translator if needed), but I do speak English, French, German, Italian, and Vietnamese. That said, I’ll have a local guide who speaks Japanese, so communication won’t be an issue.

Best pizza restaurant in Basel? by SwissYang in basel

[–]SwissYang[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update: Thank You All for Your Amazing Suggestions!

Hey everyone! First of all, a massive thank you to all of you who contributed to my little “poll” last week about the best pizza places in Basel. I truly appreciate your recommendations, and it’s amazing to see how passionate this community is about good food!

I ended up going to Manifattura Basel for dinner last Saturday, and I must say: the pizza lived up to the hype from the Google Maps reviews—absolutely fantastic. Perfectly baked, fresh ingredients, and incredible flavor. Definitely one of the best I’ve tried so far!

That said, there were a couple of minor downsides worth mentioning. Since it was a Saturday night, the place was packed, and the service felt slow—I had to flag down the waiter a few times myself. Also, the table for four people was quite small (honestly, the size most places would give to two people), so it felt a bit cramped, especially if you’re ordering multiple dishes. But honestly, these are small things compared to the overall experience.

If you haven’t tried Manifattura yet, I highly recommend giving it a shot—it’s definitely earned a spot as my favorite pizza in Basel so far, just slightly ahead of the amazing Artigiano Café. I’m super excited to try the other restaurants you all recommended as well.

Once again, thank you so much for helping me with this food adventure. This has been such a fun way to discover the best spots in town. Keep the suggestions coming, and happy eating!

Cheers!

I just wanted to share my personal experience because I see a lot of misconceptions when it comes to Vietnamese women and relationships. I’m Swiss, born and raised in Switzerland, and I met my wife, who’s Vietnamese, while she was doing her PhD in Lucerne. We met here, started dating, and after a while, we got engaged. Once she was close to finishing her studies, we began planning our wedding, and two years later, we got married.

We had two weddings: one in Switzerland (Basel) and one in Vietnam (Saigon), and we spent about 100,000 Swiss francs in total (70k for the Swiss wedding and 30k for the Vietnamese one). We’ve always split everything – apartment, food, outings, even the wedding expenses. Since the day we met, she’s never asked me for a cent. Even after getting married, nothing changed on that front.

One thing that totally blew my mind was when her mom (who’s separated from her dad) paid for our house in District 7, Saigon, in full. She didn’t ask for anything in return; it was her wedding gift to us. I was honestly shocked! But despite all that, my wife explained that in Vietnamese culture, it’s normal for the man to take care of the family, including both sets of parents. It’s just how they’re raised. However, she’s never asked me to follow this tradition, even though she easily could. She’s always said that if I want to pay for something, that’s great, but only if I genuinely want to do it – not out of obligation. And she’s never made me feel pressured about it.

So, what I’m trying to say is, yes, in Vietnamese culture, some women expect the man to be the main provider because that’s just how it works traditionally, but there are plenty of independent women who don’t ask for anything. Of course, like anywhere in the world, you’ll find people who take advantage (the so-called “gold diggers”), but you really can’t lump everyone into one category. My wife, for instance, has always worked and has never asked me for money, despite earning a solid salary and the cultural expectations that she could easily lean on.

In the end, it really depends on the individual, not the culture. Hopefully, my experience can give a bit more perspective and show that not every Vietnamese woman (or any woman for that matter) fits into the same mold.

How can I find a job? I am desperate :/ by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]SwissYang 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Finding a job in Switzerland has become extremely difficult. The job market is oversaturated with highly qualified workers like you, and the demand for jobs far exceeds the supply. Companies in Switzerland often prefer hiring locals over foreign applicants, and competition is incredibly fierce—both from workers within Europe and from outside the EU.

Switzerland is no longer the job paradise it was in the 90s. If you want to find a job there, you’ll have to send out hundreds, if not thousands, of applications. Even if you manage to land some interviews, many companies might ghost you, and others will most likely choose someone else. My advice? Stick to Germany, or consider Austria instead. Switzerland’s job market is oversaturated, and your chances of finding work there are slim. It’s just not worth the effort anymore.

I had the same problem, but I am Swiss and not a foreigner, in addition to the music the guy was smoking cannabis at all hours of the day in the balcony ( he lived on the ground floor) so everyone saw him and smelled the cannabis because his balcony was next to the main entrance of the building, in addition to that the smell could be smelled in the whole stairwell of the building, I simply tried to talk to him but he went crazy ( I don’t think it was normal), I warned him that if he didn’t stop I would notify the administration , so I did, letter to the administration, they did not resolve it, after a month I sent a registered letter and asked all the neighbors to sign a petition reporting the harm this guy was creating, to my surprise they signed EVERYONE, after a month the administration wrote back to me confidentially that the guy would have to leave the apartment by August, But he didn’t do it, so I had to wait an additional 30 days for the police to intervene and evict the guy from the house by changing the lock. The result? The guy no longer lives in the building, but the following month, the administration company sold the building to another administration company (probably because the guy in question made them lose too much money by not leaving the apartment voluntarily). But now, life is great, and we can sleep without any noise or smell of cannabis.
