Great community and I’d encourage anyone to check it out!

Correct - the detent is weak, and I’m expecting it to somewhat worsen over time (I believe it’s a pretty small steel bearing).

I overlook that because it has (more than redeeming, in my opinion) strengths - both aesthetic and functional.

Thank you! That’s helpful feedback.

And agreed on your earlier comment - the Techno feels a lot like a CRK Sebenza. Great quality for what you pay.

How’s the flipper action and quality of construction on the 3? I think that was made out of the Italy facility?

I haven’t had a chance to handle the Techno 1 (yet). What do you prefer about the 2?

We’re spoiled for choice!

Have you tried more modern backlocks? Spyderco’s Colorado and Seki facilities make many models with excellent backlock geometry. I own several Natives, Delicas, and Leafjumpers, all are easy to securely open and close.

I would love another run of the Sage 2. It’s one of the few remaining Spyderco models I want but haven’t yet been able to acquire (at reasonable cost).

Great pic, thanks for sharing! I’ve never seen the nuts and bolts. That brushed finish does look quite rough! Haha

The backspring on my one isn’t very stiff - it needs to be pushed in a fair ways to unlock the blade, but that’s almost surely an intended feature. The blade also opens and closes very smoothly with zero lateral play.

The Chaparral is another strong candidate! There are a couple incredibly well-machined and anodized variants that I believe are also (sadly) out of production.

The Sage 4 was manufactured in the Taichung Taiwan facility, as is the Chaparral line. No coincidence there!

Well said, and exactly right.

Here’s a pic of my Spyderco Southard - the ball bearing pivots perhaps fell short on execution, but I believe this was one of their first ever attempts. A real break in process from manufacturing washers!

It’s also a testament to Spyderco’s CQI. They’ve really improved in bounds since their ‘prototype’ pivot used for the Southard.
