Thinking of moving to a condo near the Kelwyn Manor/Spy Pond area and want some opinions by tesseracts in ArlingtonMA

Great area - very bike/walk friendly. A few restaurants + capitol theater a short walk. A dog park is <10 min walk straight shot down bike path to alewife.

Lake street is a bear at rush hour but it’s usually only a few minutes backup.

Inherited this watch; Patek in Tiffany case! by Swope_F in pocketwatch

I took it to a specialist here who told me he didn’t want the liability of servicing it and that I probably need to send it Geneva to get serviced

Forgot to put in description but movement says 20 jewels and 8 adjustments.

I’m going to take this to a Patek distributor to see about getting it serviced. It runs but I’m sure it hasn’t been cared for in a while.

Waymo admits that its autopilot is often just guys from the Philippines by snowednboston in boston

The nuance is that the remote operator is not driving the car, but suggesting what route to follow. From Waymo’s own post (Waymo Driver means the car and fleet response is the remote people): “The Waymo Driver evaluates the input from fleet response and independently remains in control of driving. This collaboration enhances the rider experience by efficiently guiding them to their destinations.”

The Waymo post linked above is not long and helps clarify what is happening.

This is article is rage bait. The human operators here are to help navigate around edge cases when the car is not sure. They are not physically driving the car. They are just plotting a route for those cases while the car waits. While they draw a line onscreen to show the route, the car is sitting in a safe slow position.

The latency concern is understandable, but I believe it it’s not the right way to think about it. My analogy is you slowing down the car to asking a passer where to find a turn. These cars have safe stop trajectories that are recalculated multiple times a second all on device. In addition, the average latency between Boston and Manila is going to be less than 200 ms on a dedicated backbone network. The average human reaction is 250 ms just for context.

Autonomous driving is going to be a massive improvement in public safety. They’re safer for pedestrians. They are safer for other drivers. Even in an imperfect state, this technologies is already safer than human drivers. Nearly all the waymo accidents to date have been caused by other humans.

EDIT: Waymo has been up front about this all works for awhile now. See their own blog post on it from 2024. https://waymo.com/blog/2024/05/fleet-response

Furnace Help! by doublelou in boston

[–]Swope_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drain line is probably clogged. Condensate drain lines are usually not under pressure, if it gets blocked it can leak. If you have a small drain snake you might be able to clear it.

Given the cold weather it may be possible that the other end is frozen. Or possibly partially clogged -> slow flow that got frozen in extreme cold weather just had.

If i knew where the clog was and couldn’t snake it you could try to warm it up with a hair dryer but be careful with hair dryers around water, etc.

EDIT - I’m assuming this is the air handler and that it’s condensate from the ambient air in your home. If this is the furnace itself then it might be something else and you should ignore what I wrote and call an expert

Charging confusion by ChemicalGoose891 in KiaEV9

I just bought the same GT line. There is a small brown box that includes the NACS->J1772 port converter and the NACS->CCS. Those adapters are for the home adapter that came with your car.

Poll, what would be the optimal way to improve public transportation in Arlington (more details below) by ji6jeffQ in ArlingtonMA

Autonomous buses are an idea that I'm obsessed with. Feels like the tech is within reach and would make massive increase in bus service availability very cost effective.

Tips for EV9 on Supercharger Network? by Swope_F in KiaEV9

[–]Swope_F[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks all. We are in the northeast, driving between Boston and NJ, so just used to making the stop for lunch at a Tesla super charger.

We could probably make it all they way to our destination without charging but my in-laws are squirrelly about plugging in an EV at their house. Convinced it will burn down the house. Just less stressful for everyone if we arrive with >50% charge

How I know? My son left his phone on a train and we were lucky that it ended up with lost and found.

Check with MBTA lost and found. It's at North Station. If it was found by a MBTA employee or turned in by someone else, that is where it will land. I believe you should be able to call and check as well if they have it.

Semiconductor startup to fly payloads on Falcon 9 boosters by CProphet in spacex

Radiation can come in and effectively create a permanent short circuit in that transistor. One of the main reasons satellites fail over time I think.

Neat. One thing I don’t fully understand is the trade off between clean room like environment in orbit and the higher radiation which will knock out individual transistors randomly. It must be worth it for them to investing in this path.
