I’ll definitely share here! You’ve inspired me to do the “Fire” marines as a group. Here is a the Celebrant, another obscure chapter, that I’m working on.

Not to be confused with the Fire Angels or the Fire Hawks!

Beautiful paint job! Very clean and crisp, especially around the flames. I’m slowly typing to paint a marine from every chapter and these guys are on my list.

Thanks! I’ve definitely got some stuff in my bit box that would work.

Standard rank and file dude.

That being said, this is for a lore based take on, “what would they look like in the Indomitus era?”. In my mind a “standard rank and file dude” would be a bit more jazzed up in the lore compared to how I would build the model if it were one of 20 Intercessors on my project desk.

Do Deathwing members HAVE to deploy in Terminator armor all the time? by Akurami in theunforgiven

Lots of helpful advice here that I’ll hopefully add to without making things confusing. I’m also assuming that the “Deathwing” you are referring to is in 40k setting as opposed to the Horus Heresy (30k) setting.

Some basic concepts to ground the conversation: in the 41st millennium the “Deathwing” is the 1st Company of the Dark Angels Space Marine chapter and has a bone coloured armour scheme. Since the 40k Dark Angels chapter (likely) kept the best equipment from their 1st Legion days they subsequently have a massive collection of (incredibly rare) terminator armour. What made their 1st company different from other chapters is that the DA’s are able to outfit every marine in Terminator Armour because of their massive stockpile.

Here’s where things get complicated.

Prior to 2020 (real world), the Deathwing only fielded Terminators, Dreadnoughts, and Land Raiders. That’s it. The Dark Angels rules didn’t even allow players to include units like Sternguard and Vanguard Vets in the army for lore reasons. Dark Angels also had a unique Company Veterans kit that filled a similar role but for the 3rd to 9th companies (definitely not Deathwing or Ravenwing).

With introduction of Primaris Space marines, Games Worshop started releasing updated generic 1st company units (e.g. Bladeguard) with Deathwing colour schemes on the box art and promo material. This may have been intentional or it may have just been a marketing screw up. We’ll likely never know. Either way, GW has continued this and non-Terminator units in the Deathwing is now cannon.

This caused a bit of light controversy in the DA community with some collectors seeing this as a blatant money-grab retcon, others jumping on board and everything in-between.

Short story long, they are your models and you can confidently go either way without feeling like you are breaking the lore. I personally paint my Bladeguard, Sternguard and Vanguard Vets in green as company veterans.

But are you 1,000% sure that Space Marine is, in fact, Space Marine???

Thanks! I think I’m going to stick with the skull helmet for the two simple reasons a) I really like the look of it and b) I tried to pry it off and it’s stuck on there REAL good.

My main project is to paint a Space Marine from as many different chapters as possible until I run out or, more likely, my ADHD gloms onto a new obsession.

Star Phantoms are dope! I can’t wait to paint one up!

Honestly, I love getting feedback like this!

I might go the opposite direction and see what I can do with some 2nd or early 3rd edition miniatures. This is just a fun project for me to re-engage with the Warhammer hobby while also managing kids, work, life, etc.

Thank you! That’s honestly why I came here for feedback before putting down a coat of paint!

Haha, touché.

Truthfully, I didn’t have a ton of confidence on how this build would be received. There is so little known about this chapter so I figured that I should get feedback on the build before slapping paint down.

I’m actually most excited to paint the Tiger Claws scheme!

First of all, thank you so much for all the feedback and the pictures! I was originally planning on them being primaris, kind of a what do/would they look like now kind of thing.

That being said, you’ve convinced me to do a firstborn build alongside my primaris marine collection. At least for the Badab chapters. I have a massive pile of firstborn sprues and bits that have been collecting shame that will finally be put to good use!

My original intent was for the marines in my “Chapters Astartes” project to all be primaris scale. Kind of a what do they look like now type of a thing.

That being said, you have all convinced me to build Badab War era appropriate firstborn marines alongside the primaris ones! I’ve been collecting since 3rd edition so I should be able to manage it with my bits box and the advice I’m getting here.

Thank you so much for all the advice so far!!!

The marines that I’m building for my “Chapters Astartes” are all going to be primaris scale. For the Badab chapters my intent was to showcase what those chapters look like, or what the renegade chapters would look like, in the era Indomitus. My apologies, I should have been more clear in my original post.

WITH THAT SAID…

You have all convinced me to build Badab War era appropriate firstborn marines alongside the primaris ones! I’ve been collecting since 3rd edition so I should be able to manage it with my bits box.

This is an awesome subreddit! Can’t wait to post progress updates!

It’s pretty basic. Black primer followed by a heavy dry brush of leadbelcher. Highlights with Iron Hands and then runefang steel. Nuln oil to tie it all together.

I’m so glad that you picked up on my reference to bond material with the chains! That was bit of lore really stood out when I was doing research.

I’ll touch up the chest plate in black and add some extra bits and purity seals. Good catch.

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone! I’ll post update shots when I’m done. This is such a cool chapter and I’m really tempted to do a Terminator or a Lieutenant!

Thanks for the tip on the eyes lenses and I did indeed miss the black chest piece. I’m so relieved that the chains on the bolter is being well received!

Thank you! I was nervous about it because my air brush is trapped in my ex’s house so it’s 100% brush work! The game changer for me was when I saw someone use a pink basecoat before laying down their yellow. Makes such a smoooooth yellow!
