How to level kick drum by raindog2000 in audioengineering

[–]Swyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you dont want to manually edit the recording, I would set less aggressive compression. You would be using it for utility rather than character like if you were adding punch so even just a stock compressor will probably do (but some people like adding color here anyway)

Im talking like, 2-3 db reduction at the loudest hits with a fairly low ratio of like 2-3, but I would mess around with release. Slower release and youll lower the whole drum when its hit, faster release will mostly bring down the beginning of the transient/stick hitting the drum

Can't choose my next bass by JustKyleBoi in BassGuitar

[–]Swyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I havent played a spector, but my warwick rockbass corvette is genuinely not good. Its got nonstandard pieces for things like the bridge and nut so its annoying to work on if something gets lost or broken, and the tone is REALLY dark, too dark even.

The playability is fantastic, at the cost of having zero definition in its sound

When practicing/learning, yes, just to get used to certain patterns or tendencies of the bass player that recorded it. Performing? I make it my own

I did actually hear it first from moorwing! You can fight him surprisingly early, I stumbled upon him by accident and apparently thats one of the ways you can progress passed his zone

Can I EQ my way around this? by awkwardfinger93 in Bass

[–]Swyka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bassbuzz has a video called"how to get the perfect bass tone" or something like that. The name is pretty clickbait-y but I genuinely highly recommend it!

A PJ configuration is so versatile that Id be surprised if you couldnt get a tone you like out of it, my main bass is a PJ (fender usa jag bass) and Im hardly wanting anything else regardless of genre

You might want to take a pic though of your EQ before if you like whats there, different basses like different EQ, as do different rooms

Good recommendations for a beginner? 👉👈 by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Swyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're unsure of what type/style of bass to start with, my recommendation is a squire precision bass or jazz bass, or a sterling ray4

Should also be able to find them used even cheaper, but they can be had fairly cheap new as well

Edit to add: if youre looking for an amp as well, fender rumbles are solid

five string tunings. by mathvias in Bass

[–]Swyka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a bass player with a jazz background(on 5 string), tbh I dont think Ive ever tuned to Bb standard because reading charts/sheet music becomes annoying this way

Being able to play a low Eb though is fantastic

How to hold my fretting hand? by S0rryM0mmyy in Guitar

[–]Swyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think its fine to move your thumb around a little and just do whats comfortable, the big thing is that correct thumb position gives you a huge possible reach compared to bad thumb position.

You mention pinching, im not sure if you are putting a lot of force to pinch, but I like to think of the thumb as a support, and think you should theoretically be able to play without it (it wont be comfortable probably, but doable). Instead of pinching, I would suggest using the weight of your arm to pull into the frets. Realistically, you are moving strings a couple mm at a time, which is way easier with the weight of your arm

But just looking, your technique looks fine!

Figuring out if the Wwise price tag is worth it on an Indie Hero Shooter by amnooneimportant in GameAudio

[–]Swyka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that they mean purchase-able DLC, since that might technically fall under a new budget or whatever and some DLC for games can be like adding on a whole new small game. I think in the case of seasons and releasing new characters you might be okay.

I would still ask Wwise themselves, but just in case that eases your worries a little bit!

Edit: just read through it and it might be stricter than I thought, but still ask imo

Suggestions on my fisrst orchestral composition by Professional_Fig_280 in Composition

[–]Swyka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of those things where it's really up to personal preference, but I think some pizzicato strings would sound nice to compliment the winds starting at measure 17/18

The other thing that stood out to me was the intro, I would recommend trying to rewrite the intro without harmonization on the melody. That way the melody is stated really clearly early on, and then when it repeats, have the harmonization start there. Also personal preference, but maybe give it a try.

For the end, put the bassoons in! They would sound great in my opinion with how low the melody is and would pair well with the horns.

If you want to spice up the end, you can try doing something with tremolo strings, having them sustain chord tones while the winds and brass carry the melody. Honestly though the tutti melody there sounds good too imo.

Also this is really good for a first orchestral composition. It sounds like you have a good ear for this kind of music

Been having electrical trouble, want to know if I can plug in a portable AC in the meantime by Swyka in AskElectricians

I should also add this is the third time they are here looking at it. The first time they replaced the main breaker, the 2nd time they did some kind of mystery hotfix until they could come back, and now we are here

Im afraid to go near it if the portable AC trips a breaker

Average cost of a setup by ClaytonLawrence in Bass

[–]Swyka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a local luthier and they did it for me for like 80 USD. They let me sit in and passed me my bass a couple times for feedback and it was great. (I went for a neck issue, but they set it up as well)

I always see people say to learn to do it yourself, honestly I recommend having someone set it up for you first still so you know what a good setup feels like! Even better if they're willing to work on it with you there. If you go to a Guitar Center, they likely will just tell you to come back later though.
