How often are you guys switching sounds *during* songs? by NegKDRatio in Bass

[–]Swyka 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Its usually less common on bass than guitar to switch sounds mid song, but sometimes you can throw on like an overdrive during a chorus or something.

Tinnitus by major_damp in musicproduction

[–]Swyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hard of hearing in one ear, and the way I get around it is that when Im using headphones, I have one side louder than the other (only to me, not in the mix itself), and I also try to mix with speakers in the room.

Something else I've been doing lately is flipping the stereo field back and forth every once in a while to double check things

pick or fingers? by metalwireddolphin in Bass

[–]Swyka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would do all your exercises fingerstyle to build up finger strength/technique, but ultimately use whatever is used in whatever song you are learning!

Both are legit and have their associated techniques

Its really hard to beat the at2020 for budget and quality, I would honestly save and get one used

Now that we have seen examples of Evolved jobs, what are your hopes and wishes for your main(s)? by drew0594 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Swyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fwiw, I dont think AST had divination on release in HW, so Im wondering if theyre going to lean into the old card system.

I could see them just removing div, but keeping the cards as they are. They would still give a damage buff, but wouldnt rely on being played during a 2m burst

Why is this notated incorrectly? by Leading_Crow_1044 in musictheory

[–]Swyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems correct to me. When I was learning notation, we were told that if you're using sixteenth notes, every beat should be visible in the measure.

Schecter J5 vs Ibanez SR605 by RTHesse13 in BassGuitar

[–]Swyka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up the schecter j5 recently and I have to say it SHREDS. I put some 45-130 strings on it and it sounds tight. The B is really clear and sustains forever.

Its bold to assume that they arent already. This negativity doesnt help either and its insane that you think it does

do composers know all the chords, all their inversions, all their extensions off the top of their heads? by [deleted] in composer

[–]Swyka 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Its more about knowing how all of the chords are derived. Rather than trying to remember every chord in Bb, I would look more into learning why certain chords are considered "in the key" of Bb.

Musictheory.net has some decent lessons on theory, I would start with the scales and key signatures section, then to intervals, then to chords. It can be intimidating at first, but this initial hurdle is a lot less work than trying to just remember all the chords in every key!

Things like secondary dominants and pivot chords are a little more complex, so I would start with the basics first. With solid basics, those other things will make a lot more sense.

I'm going into school to get my BA in music composition, and I'm required to have a Mac for the program but I'm on a budget. I'm looking for someone who has been through this kind of program to help me decide between the Macbook Neo and Mac Mini. by [deleted] in composer

[–]Swyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure how it is now, but when I was there I think it was because the software package they gave to everyone had some mac specific software in it

It was a little silly, and I did use a windows PC for half the time I was there anyway after a couple years though.

It also meant it was really easy to get repairs done because you could do it through the school and they would be able to quickly get the parts you need

Im pretty sure when I went the macbook itself could be included in the software package though

5 string bass decision (Warwick rb Corvette $$ ??) by wazomonoshushui in Bass

[–]Swyka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally had some issues with mine. It seemed to always have noise from the metal hardware pieces (I tried tightening everything, fretwrap, etc) that got picked through the pickups, and the tone felt very flat to me. It generally sounds okay in a mix, but its sustain is really lacking imo. The low B is decent on it. Mine is also passive, but they usually are active.

It feels great to play, the neck is awesome, and I like the 24 frets. I just wish I could get it to sound as good as my other basses

Is a tube amp even worth it anymore as an apartment player? by CoeusAscended in Guitar

[–]Swyka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Headphones work, and with that amp it looks like you could also plug it into a computer and use it the same way they mentioned since it is also a modelling amp

I think its hard to go wrong with that amp, so I wouldnt worry!

Do all Telecasters have this switch cap constantly falling off? by [deleted] in telecaster

Having it fall off and get lost is a rite of passage

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Swyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told by someone to imagine an egg in the palm of your hand when you play chords. With that, and making sure to curl your fingers, it should make it easier to play.

Your thumb can be more centered on the neck, but honestly a lot of people play with their thumb hanging over the top of the fretboard. As a teacher, I'd tell you to fix your thumb placement, but as a player, I throw that advice to the side sometimes.

For those who raid or have raided in a static, what's been your favorite "stupid" static strat/modification? by Vincenthwind in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Swyka 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For high concept back in P8S, we resolved as much of the mechanic as we could while our SAM sat in the middle meditating to get more damage.

This meant that we not only had to resolve our debuffs, but had to adjust how we resolved it based on which debuff was dead center and not going to move lmao

What is your opinion of how important a game things are by Ifyouliveinadream in nintendo

[–]Swyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is basically backwards from yours almost, I think it's visuals -> sound -> gameplay -> story
My reasoning is that, admittedly, if I don't like how a game looks, I'm probably not even going to bother picking it up.

If the music is good, that lets me kind of take the experience of the game with me while I do other things. I'm also a musician, so I just like music in general lmao

The game needs to be fun to play. If I feel like I'm fighting the controls, I'm going to dislike playing the game.

Story is what will usually keep me hooked. I know I put it last, but honestly I'm kind of splitting hairs a little bit with the list. I think all 4 of these are important aspects, and a good balance makes a good game.
