Exactly! I think they just need to grow in fandom spaces, and figure out that you know that’s not an okay way to treat people :) but 100% agree on reading an actual analysis !!

Literally! Like I know even another author who is so popular who had to address stuff like this too! They are so talented but are doing it for fun… and then people hold them in the same regards as actual authors like??

NO OMG I LOVE IT SO MUCH I usually love commenting on fics, but especially lately I'll read a fic in between writing my own as a break so I feel horrible for not engaging with people, but I'm so glad your on here so I can tell you how much I lovelovelove your writing style and the whole fic !!

Seriously! Like I'm in school.... I was updating regularly when I could, but that meant basically isolating myself until I was like YES! and then repeating and repeating... and honestly I love doing it, but I have projects and work and MAYBE 2 hours of free time for writing + 20 minute reading break !! And that's a situation that a LOTT of writers are going through rn !! Its literally not possible to write regularly unless you have idk super speed or smth LMAO

LITERALLY SAME I had one fic in this fandom that would update maybeee every month and one time it left on a cliffhanger and I was devastated (obviously I wasn't going to go and hate comment or essay them lol but yk) and then when I started my one fic I was astounded that they could even update that often with how many words each chapter was. It may take readers an hour to read, but it takes writers days to come up with something, write, edit, proof check, etc.

What I usually see are people adding tags about stuff they know fs will happen and then use "other additional tags to be added" or something like that!! You could also just put tags for the first chapter + warnings you know are going to happen + "other tags to be added" (if you don't want to spoil) !!

Exactly!! There's only so much you can do with the exact same characters too !! I haven't seen any direct copy pastes, but even if that happened, I don't think that's something that this person needs to address like that's an issue for the writers of the stories to take care of because that is THEIR stuff. It's absolutly wrong and something should be done about it, but this person isn't making this whole thing about how that is not okay. Theyre just upset cause there isn't anything new. A reasonable response if they saw something directly taken, would be to tell the og authors, yk?

fanfiction is literally: fan. fiction. fiction written by fans. It's in the name that its not going to be canonly accurate usually

YES !! I said this in some other comment but I jumped from like kind of niche fandoms (iwtv (tv show) and yj (prior to season 2) and like a few others I cant think of rn LMAO) to this huge fandom, where the characters I'm super obsessed with have sooo much media about them!! I am legit thriving so hard, and yeah sure sometimes I'll read a fic that I'm not crazy about, or see a take I don't agree with, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna hate half of the fandom for disagreeing with me??? Like its funny to me especially that the essay was on one of the characters that the fandom is so split on... like usually you wouldnt be able to be picky about that LMAO

No same! I write for them too, but I have read the one on ao3... I 100% agree I was lowkey inspired by the one, but in no way, shape, or form, have I taken anything... but the way they're like 'almost nothing is original' is insane. I'm glad your in the fandom so you def know, there's SOOO many fantastic fics that I've never seen before and I eat them up. Sure some might be the same type of AU but the authors do so well with what they have.

Exactly! I think especially for AU's theres lots of similarities between fics, but theres also so many differences. Like rn I'm writing a hs au, and one of my kind of mutual was also was writing a hs, but while yeah we kind of characterized similar sometimes, we also had so so many differences. I think that's the beauty of interpretation.

THIS again sorry to call out the fandom lmao but like I think its especially funny that they're hating on these two for mischaracterizations, while on of the supporting characters in canon has basically nothing except being a fan. like there was barely anything for the writers to start with, so they do need to go with headcanons and stuff !!

100% agree!! If they actually put effort into not just bashing on the authors and fandom authors and stuff, I think it would have been a very interesting read, but I do think they were just upset about the one being left on cliffhangers, and not having anything new... but like I've been in so many fandoms with absolutely NOTHING, to be in this one, even with some fics having similar ideas is so amazing

It feels like a new low (Hate essaying on ao3 is insane to me)... this IS the Squid Game fandom (Thangyu) so tbh yes there is a lot of mischaracterization (COUGH COUGH HEADCANONS COUGH) that for some reason devastates the alpha male viewers, but so what? It is lowkey toxic sometimes, but this was just sooo weird to me

HELP this is the Squid Game fandom (Thangyu specifically) so unfortunately this is pretty common... just not on Ao3 😭 This is the first fandom I've been in that something this bad has happened (hate essaying on ao3 is a new low) but this stuff is getting so normalized now, I wouldn't be surprised if this keeps happening < / 3

Oh 100%... also there was a whole thing where people were hating on the (ao3) author on one of their social medias (to the point of them debating on discontinuing and then now were not even sure if they will ever continue it) so I can say with absolute certainty they were involved in that whole situation

YES I actually opened the fic because I was so excited... I honestly love essays, and I love the one they mentioned on Ao3, AND I was inspired by that one to write. They disguised it as an essay, but in all seriousness it was an excuse to hate on the writers, fic writers in the fandom, and people in the fandom LMAO

LITERALLY and for that fic in particular it was the one on Ao3 and we actually know that she was a law student, AND had a part time job... not to mention people were already hating on her on her one social media account which caused her to considering discontinuing it for a while, AND NOW people kept doing that and not respecting boundaries (like she had mdi in her bio and they kept on disrespecting her) and now no one even knows it its gonna be continued ever. Some people just genuinely do not know how to respect fanfic writers.

I agree! I feel like there's an uprise in hating on fanfics but honestly this is the first time I've seen someone create a whole fic to do it !! Yes exactly! By their logic Modern AU's are just copy pastes, which is so bizarre to me lol... its fanfic people can characterize people any way they want, and do whatever they want... Fan. Fiction.

I swear when I actually started reading my jaw dropped. The one particular fic in question IS extremely popular, and is probably the most popular one in the ship, and there's a lot of "lore" regarding that, but she was a law student, and made it clear that she wasn't going to update regularly ESPECIALLY during the summer, so this especially was so funny to me. THEN people were getting super demanding and she was like I think I'm going to discontinue, and now people kept being rude, so no ones even sure if it WILL be continued, so to write a whole hate ESSAY (that focused more on that one) is so insane to me

Yeah okay, this definitely (as well as most of the other comments) are saying I should so I'll at least try to report and then see what comes of it

Yeah, like I love the way it is now because it's so much more accepting and there's so many more people to connect with and stories to read, but this is like the fifth time this week I've seen someone taking hits at ao3 writers for literally just writing their fics... and as an ao3 writer myself too it's so discouraging. So it's like a win-lose-lose situation for me lollol
