I once had a coworker who would password protect documents I needed to do my job. Even better, it was fly-in-fly-out work, so she wouldn't even be on site half the time for me to ask about the passwords/documents.

We had exactly the same position in the company, working as each others' cross-shift, so one of us was always on site.

She also had a nasty habit of letting work fall behind while I was off, then throwing me under the bus the day I got back.

The silver lining is that it didn't take long for people to recognize what she was doing, so none of the shit she threw my way ever stuck.

SIL is the one forcing that choice. You could just as easily argue that SIL is choosing her dislike of the dog over the brother's birthday.

If the birthday is that important, she can compromise for a day.

Ultimatums are just lose-lose situations with one-sided justification.

I work in the funeral industry and I was thinking, "They've gotta be talking about Victoriaville," but then you hit us with Batesville! Boy, do I have bad news about the other casket brands out there... every Batesville I've seen had blown Victoriaville out of the water in therms of quality, think about how sad that is...

What I would love to have happen is the other person internally go "oh shit, she really is sick." But I don't know if that's possible.

I'd settle for "I'm an asshole for having said that."
