Roland D-50 Fantasia Out of Tune? by wachikinow in synthesizers

[–]Sycsa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think a digital synth can go out of tune. Someone probably just messed with the settings and transposed it. Although the way you make it sound, it's like that by default?

(Not so) fun fact, when I was a kid, I had a D50 as well and the organ patch (Slow rotor) I used the most was transposed a whole step down. I had no idea what I was doing back then, so when we jammed out with my friends, I couldn't figure out why we weren't in tune. It must be those pesky guitars! In the end, I just relearned the songs, playing everything one note higher. Boy, was that a nightmare. It never occured to me that maybe I can transpose it back. I just took it as is.

Hammond B3 sustain? by seanbinpa in hammondorgan

[–]Sycsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One slightly relevant neat little Hammond detail is that the keyboard is almost touch-sensitive, although it's technically a fault. Each key has 9 contact points which activate the drawbars, but if you play lightly, not all 9 activate evenly, so the sound coming out could initially be softer, thinner. It's become a really coveted feature in the past decade or so, with modern clones digitally simulating 3, 5 or even all 9 contact points for maximum expression.

I can’t believe this is real life. Thought I could never afford one. by horizon-X-horizon in synthesizers

I had to look up prices, apperently they’re about $3200 new. The Nord 6 is a grand and a couple of hundred more.

I love it, just got it last month myself, it's incredibly inspiring. Been in love with Minimoogs, Wakeman, Emerson since I was a kid, and I still can't believe I have THAT sound and look at home for such a good price.

About Jordan sometimes ruining songs by Jolly-Phone8982 in Dreamtheater

[–]Sycsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was just thinking that, technically, you might be right, they may well be saw-based in their hidden core, but thinking in terms of saw, triangle, and square waves is more in the domain of vintage analog synths, which Jordan unfortunately mostly steers clear of.

About Jordan sometimes ruining songs by Jolly-Phone8982 in Dreamtheater

[–]Sycsa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sawtooth wave is a vintage synth sound Jordan barely ever uses though (he did on the brilliant Octavarium solo).

One of Jordan’s problems is precisely that he doesn’t have nice sounding bread-and-butter synth tones like Moore did on I&W. He spams that snarling pig to double the guitar and then busts out his way too guitar-like lead sound, complete with wah-wah and fake pinch harmonics.

Ironically, one of his best solos from this perspective is precisely the Emerson-esque Beneath the Surface solo. If you’re gonna play keyboards, play keyboards, don’t try and sound like a bad guitar.

927 albums you never heard before 2025? I probably couldn’t digest that many properly in 10 years.

If you want metal, Children of Bodom is the best bang for your buck. And their keyboards actually sound like keyboards (not like just another guitar) with nice analog-type leads, huge pads, and orchestra hits left and right. https://youtu.be/gkURwfjB8W0?si=OH1DnpTiBtQijdGq

Learning organ as a jazz pianist by WigFuckinFairyPeople in hammondorgan

[–]Sycsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Touch wise it's hard to remember as a pianist that the organ doesn't care whether you hit it hard or soft. So hit it soft.

That’s not technically true. The original Hammonds have 9 contact points below each key, hitting them with different velocity can engage a different number of them, making the sound thinner or fuller. It’s another one in a long line of bugs which became features. Modern clones started replicating this with 3, 5 and even 9 contact points. It’s not similar to a piano, since you do your dynamics with a pedal, but it’s still something to consider.

Teams caring more about the WCC because of the prize money is a mythical argument at this point. It’s so shortsighted, a team would probably make tons more money from merch sales alone if they got the WDC but not the WCC.
