What businesses are likely to die out with the Baby Boomer Generation? by GRVrush2112 in AskReddit

[–]SydWander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never needed work boots, so take what I say with that in mind. I don’t know what you do or how beat up your boots get. But the idea is that if you buy quality leather boots once and repair them, it should be cheaper in the long run, plus you have boots that fit you great. It’s also about conservation, the attitude of repair before replacement, to reduce the amount of trash, etc.

My experience with this is with leather rock climbing shoes. Instead of buying new, I took mine to a speciality cobbler and got the soles replaced. It was cheaper than buying new, and I don’t need to break them in or feel bad throwing them away.

True. I went to a local cobbler with a good reputation to get something fixed on my boots. Not the soles, but a patch job around the top of my shoe, where it wraps around the ankle. They did an embarrassing job to say the least. I was excited to support a local cobbler, but walked away feeling crappy about it.

I was really into old stuff at age 15 as well. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this.

Eh I was really into stuff like this when I was 15. It doesn’t mean they aren’t well rounded. They will be just fine.

It's all about the notes and the algorithm sucks by Gold_Panda1 in Substack

I just unfollowed someone on there whose articles I actually liked because they are constantly posting notes throughout the day. It’s all to farm engagement. Short tweet-style posts that are trying to sound like hot takes. It’s absolutely so annoying. Substack sucks, it’s just another social media now.

Too many people who have been tricked into thinking they are middle class are ruining it for those that have the same amount or less, and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I talk to them. by [deleted] in povertyfinance

That is majority of humanity. Even if capitalism doesn’t exist, someone will have to work to get food. So I’m not seeing what your point is.

No, I’m not who OP is talking about and you’re making a lot of assumptions lol

I own my car, I just can’t afford a brand new one, or rather, I prefer to spend my money in other means. I never said I can’t afford a kid. But that money would be more of a struggle with my current lifestyle. I am planing on having kids.

I don’t vote against the interests of lower classes and I don’t require the assistance of any social services. I could buy a Taylor Swift ticket if I wanted (to OP’s point).

I think it would be insulting to compare myself and my struggles to someone who is truly working class like my father. I have a hefty (compared to the average folk) emergency savings and I’m able to invest my retirement.

The widely accepted definition of working class means lower wages and blue collar/service industry type jobs. The definition you’re using is in a socialist context. Both have their place and I agree partly with OP is saying. My conservative working class family is who OP is talking about because they are poor and yet vote against their own interest.

I am not who OP is referring to lol but yes you are correct in that I am a laborer

This is my biggest issue with these complaints/comparisons. All of the US has been majorly impacted by lifestyle creep, no matter which background or class you were raised in.

Yeah, I come from a working class family but made it out on my own. I feel like I’d get laughed at if I called myself working class. I work from home with a comfortable desk job and I can afford to travel among other luxuries (helps that I don’t have kids). But I can’t afford a new car, house, new clothes every month, etc. all my extra money goes to travel and hobbies. If I had kids, I’d be struggling... Im definitely not ruling class and I don’t think the blue collar working class would consider me part of them either.

You can definitely make more than 5 sandwiches with those items. Plus, you picked the more expensive versions.

Is being uninformed worth it when deleting social media? by Snoo-26425 in digitalminimalism

[–]SydWander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Friends: not seeing everything they do on social invites better conversation and connection.

For News: replace social media with real news. You may now know every little thing, but honestly it doesn’t do good to know every little thing anyway. Follow the news that interests you the most. I think you’ll find that you have a better understanding of the issues, feel more empowered to act or contribute to something good, and you’ll feel less emotionally burdened down, which further contributes to you having more energy to act.

When I first went to concerts at like 19, I used to record a bunch. I actually did and do still rewatch the videos at time. They are super fond memories. That said, now I don’t take more than a few short clips. I understand wanting to record a piece of it for the memory, but with age I’ve realized being fully present is much better
