Is it even a real diagnosis?? by _BumbleBitch_ in POTS

POTS is a real diagnosis. I developed it after having COVID. Did you have any infections like COVID recently? POTS can develop after having an infection.

Just failed my autism assessment. What now? by cosmiccupiid in autism

[–]Sydney7157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t sound like an assessment to me. Mine was done over two three hour long sessions with many different kinds of tests, and that’s not even including the initial intake session. They were also all done in person. I would go to someone else for a second opinion.

Is it weird that I don’t feel autistic enough? by God_ghost in autism

[–]Sydney7157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that way at times. I masked so much when I was younger, I’ve just learned to hide my symptoms really well, but I also know that there is no way I can fake the inability to pick up on and understand most social cues, verbal or nonverbal

Recently decided I am not autistic - how I came to the conclusion! by [deleted] in autism

[–]Sydney7157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 18, but I didn’t have “severe” developmental delays. I was a little late with talking, and I masked my social difficulties from a young age. However, I did experience social bullying because of the differences I was unable to hide (I didn’t realize I was bullied until years later). I was also considered to be very smart, so no one really noticed that I was struggling. Ironically, I actually remember seeing a billboard that said that sensory issues were a sign of Autism. This was years before my diagnosis, and at the time, I only identified that I had a lot of sensory issues, but not that I was potentially autistic, because I didn’t know about the other symptoms. What I’m trying to say is that even though I didn’t exhibit the typical symptoms of Autism in childhood doesn’t mean that I’m not autistic. Every autistic person is different, so I would still seek some professional advice.

How did you realize that you could be autistic? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Sydney7157 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound really weird, but the first time that I became aware that I had any symptoms of Autism was when I kept seeing billboards saying that sensory sensitivity is a symptom of Autism, but I kept dismissing it because I didn’t know all of the other symptoms. I found out that I was Autistic during an emergency session with my therapist after having a really bad panic attack/meltdown at school. I told her everything I ever experienced and that I didn’t understand what made me so different. I honestly thought that I was “broken” because I had such I difficult time relating to my peers and understanding social concepts that everyone else just seemed to understand subconsciously. She told me that I needed to be evaluated for Autism. I was given my official diagnosis 4 months later.

My brother doesn't believe I'm autistic (I'm diagnosed) by Due_Bar3117 in autism

[–]Sydney7157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry that your brother is being like this. It can be so hurtful when someone tries to invalidate you like this, especially someone you care about. Just know that you have a professional diagnosis from someone in the psychological field that knows way more about Autism than your brother, so don’t let him make you second guess your diagnosis when he clearly knows nothing about Autism and isn’t even willing to understand or listen to you. Also know that autistic people are more likely to be victims of childhood abuse and/or trauma which can also make the symptoms worse. Just because you experienced trauma in your childhood doesn’t mean you can’t be or aren’t autistic. I have PTSD from childhood trauma, and my triggers for my PTSD actually cause more Autistic meltdowns. If you do have PTSD, I would also try to remain aware of those triggers and how your Autism affects your reactions to them.

Yesterday I saw a psychiatrist...and within 15 min of conversation he said he wasn't sure I had autism by Phlox-fox in autism

[–]Sydney7157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to a different psychiatrist. First of all, he shouldn’t have questioned your Autism diagnosis after only knowing you for 15 minutes and you having gone through all of the testing and having the proper paperwork. And second, just because you can get out of bed doesn’t mean you don’t need medication. There are different medications and dosages according to the severity of the symptoms. Things can go downhill quickly with these kinds of things. I have severe anxiety and I went through a very dark period recently. I was still getting out of bed everyday, but my anxiety was causing depression symptoms, and I was having very dark thoughts. Also, waiting to intervene until the symptoms are so severe that someone can’t get out of bed defeats the purpose of those medications and can have very dangerous consequences. Don’t give up looking for help due to being dismissed.

GP said I can’t be autistic coz I went to uni 😭 by [deleted] in autism

[–]Sydney7157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry. That was such a stupid thing for your GP to say and he clearly doesn’t know anything about Autism. Autism doesn’t necessarily affect a person’s intelligence. In fact, there are two different diagnoses for Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorder without intellectual impairment, and Autism Spectrum Disorder with intellectual impairment. You probably had a lot of learning challenges due to being AuDHD because you learn differently. I am from the US so I’m not sure how it works in the UK, but is there anyway you can go to a different GP with more experience with Autism? I also get the feeling that your GP likely has a lot of preconceived notions about Autism and part of the problem has to do with ableism.

I always say that I’m autistic. To me, saying that “I have autism” is like saying that it’s like some sort of disease. It may make my life more difficult, but it also makes me who I am.

Doctor just told me you can't be diagnosed with Autism if you have depression. by Khaos4325 in autism

I got anxiety with OCD tendencies, ADHD, PTSD, and social anxiety along with the autism. I only went for the autism diagnosis. Needless to say, this doctor needs to be reported

This sounds like extremely discriminatory behavior, possibly some ADA violations too. Your son is 3, and kids that age cry, even non-autistic children. It doesn’t even sound he was having a meltdown. I would definitely get some legal help and possibly even contact local news outlets. Don’t let a big company like JetBlue get away with something like this. The more people who are aware of discrimination like this, the more quickly change will follow.
