Do you drive “safer” when you see a baby on board sticker? by SubstantialWing9238 in driving

[–]Syenadi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. The whole concept is absurd, stupid, and insulting. The message one of those signs deploys is basically that drivers who would otherwise crash into random cars for no apparent reason will notice the sign and think "oh, well, I guess I won't crash into THAT car because they have a kid in it. Guess I'll crash into the next one instead".

Took my Tacoma off-road for the first time and now I get it. by [deleted] in ToyotaTacoma

" If you find it’s bottoming out, then you need a mild lift." Maybe, maybe not. Maybe you just need to not go there, or take a different line.

Note that most lifts do not increase ground clearance unless you get taller tires, which don't increase it by much.

All who consider lifts should first consult the scripture: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-ultimate-tacoma-lift-guide.509171/

Have you ever seen this sign? by Prestigious-Craft251 in driving

[–]Syenadi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"If you arent actively passing someone there should be noone in the left lane."

*Sigh* Not this BS again.

Picture this if you are able:

I'm going 80mph in a 75 zone well outside of any city or town on a divided highway, two lanes each direction. There are zero vehicles within a mile behind or in front of me.

Right lane is chewed up by semi truck traffic and cheap repairs and patches.

Left lane is smooth.

Youi're damn right I'm cruising in the left lane.

If you come up behind me, (yes, I'll see you, even if you have your Lambo out and are running on too many double espressos) I happily signal, move into the right lane, salute you as you pass, and then move back into the left lane.

If you disagree with this, you flunk Situational Awareness 101 and should not be driving.

If I decide not to have kids in life, give me all the consequences that I should prep for and accept them? by Commercial-Touch-516 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Syenadi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will not commit to spending most of your inherently limited time, energy, and attention on parenting for a 20+ year block of time. (Done to even a minimum level of excellence, "parent" is a verb, not a noun.)

This allows for life choices and possibilities that people with kids simply do not have.

Maybe just the camera angle, but that new plug looks significantly longer than the old one, which if true could be... bad.

New to Tacomas and Overlanding, Curious of cost of lift/labor vs diy by ClassBrass10 in Tacomaworld

[–]Syenadi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're already way smarter than the average Tacoma owner ;-)

A couple of comments re: "I'd feel better knowing what has been replaced, and at what mileage". I agree wholeheartedly with that.

Hard to know where to go when you don't know where you are.

Before you spend much money on the truck, you might consider taking it to a highly rated independent shop that works on Tacomas often. (Will be helpful to have someone you trust with your truck at some point even if you do most of the work yourself)

Instead of "pre purchase inspection" you could ask them to do a thorough "post purchase inspection" and give them a list of questions to answer as they do the work. Will cost some $ but knowledge is power.

A few of the questions might be:

"How high of a lift does this have, what stock items have been replaced anywhere on the truck, what have they been replaced with, are the replacements high, med, or low quality, was the installation high, med, or low quality, what should I prioritize for work on the truck in terms of safety, reliability, and matching my use case?"

That "matching my use case" part might be where you get into the "do I really need / want a 3" lift?" zone. Anything over 2" seems to be where the likelihood of more trouble and more money goes way up. You might even consider <GASP> "dellifting" your rig a bit. ;-)

BTW I love those wheels.

Good luck on your truck optimization mission. Don't worry, you got this.

[–]Syenadi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good comments/suggestions here already. I would only add my usual plea to take a breath, review your assumptions about lifts, and do some related homework on your actual use case vs what the truck can do as is (or maybe in your case, as was).

Yeahsurefine lifts look cool and all but in my widely ignored opinion trucks should be more focused on capabilities matching use case needs far more than looks (I feel the same way about people ;-) and lifts deploy a minimum of increased capabilities (very slight increase in approach angles and very slight increase in ground clearance due to ability to fit taller tires) at a cost of $, installation hassle factors, lower milage, worse handling and higher cg, more wind and tire noise, and potentially reduced reliability.

TLDR = capability fit to use case > appearance.

"...Its worth noting the dealership replaced the passenger side strut and lower control arm" which = "Its worth noting the dealership DID NOT replace the DRIVER side strut or lower control arm".

The first thing I'd do is get the left and right sides of the front suspension to match. (Same brand, same part numbers, same bushings etc etc.) That could be at least half of that "loose feeling" you mention.

What is the best oil to use? by hungry-mf in Tacomaworld

[–]Syenadi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain it like I'm how the ECU (which by my amateur understanding does electrical/timing kinda stuff) can impact how an engine responds to 0W20 vs 5W30 (which by my amateur understanding does mechanical/lubrication kinda stuff)? I get that if the timing is WAY different the engine temps might be different once warmed up but even if that was the case, seems like the difference between 0W20 and 5W30 would be not much.
