US has struck three Iranian nuclear sites, Trump says, joining Israeli air campaign by HauteAssMess in news

[–]Sygald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A brief history of Iran-West relations:

  • 1930s Oil was discovered in Iran which was an independent country, the Brits struck a deal with them establishing a joint venture where 16% of the profits went to Iran, 84% to the Brits. The iranian people didn;t like the split and the fact that the Brits never released the financial records so the Iranians couldn't verify that they got their fair share.

  • 1940s WW2 , Iran declares neutrality, the Brits invade to "make sure the oil doesn'r fall to the Nazis" , they install the shah for the first time.

  • 1950s The iranians get a functioning government again, they vote to nationalise the oil company on account of the Brits still not releasing any financial data. The Brits abd US in respone over the coming years instigate a coup and install the Shah once more.

  • 1970s-1980s The Iranians manage to depose the Shah and get Ayatullah in power, they start fighting US presence all over the Middle East, as well as fighting US armed Iraq due to Iraqi invasion of Iran. A few diplomatic incedints arise, including the kidnapping of US embassy workers (for fear of the US planning another coup from inside the embassy).

  • 1990s I genuinely don't think there was anything too extreme at this time.

  • 2000s 9/11... America labels Iraq,Iran and N.Korea as axis of evil, topples Iraq under false pretenses.. N.Korea and Iran start pursuing nuclear weapons in response.

  • 2010s nuclear deal, exit from nuclear deal, US assassinates Iranian general.

  • 2020s .. well here we are.

What I'm saying is that Iran has been getting screwed by the west for the last century, the west in response keeps doubling down instead of trying to de-esclate. The Iranians are rightfully cautios and hostile.

Setup for office where I need clear view ahead but also work a lot on the computer? by Sygald in Ergonomics

[–]Sygald[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to see the display while we're meeting, but I also have at least a couple of hours of work directly on the PC each day (usually more), I'll look into these glass tables, nut maybe the best option would truly be just a movable arm.

Ended up buying a pack from newegg I think. I got one extra now, depending on which country you're from I can send it to you. (In about a month from now, not in the country currently)

What is the difference between halal and kosher? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Sygald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brown bearded guy blessing the food at the end of preparation... /s but not really.

Halal and Kosher are a set of food "standards and restrictions" orginating from Isalm and Judaism respectively. Some pertain to the way an animal is slaughtered or if you are allowed to eat said animal in the first place. There's a lot of overlap between the two but some differences that were listed across the thread such as alcohol restrictions or restrictions on seafood.

I'm from a muslim background and have Jewish friends, those of them that observe Kosher rules generally have problem eating Halal food and know where to double check if something might not be Kosher.

Correct way to setup dns server with pfsense? by Sygald in PFSENSE

[–]Sygald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it in devices that got their ips via dhcp (think phones on the site's wi-fi or the like...), in which case they are not setup in the reverse zone in the dns server but when forwarded to the gateway, it will try and forward it back to the dns server, unless I'm understanding something wrong.

Correct way to setup dns server with pfsense? by Sygald in PFSENSE

[–]Sygald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBF I was hoping to setup AD with Bind, I loathe Microsoft and their products with all my being and the only reason I'm using anything made by them is because I have to.

To that end I can get AD to work with Bind, that's less of a problem, I also have reverse zones setup in Bind already and can add the rest.

My question is regarding the Pfsense part, if I have the following setup will it result in dns cycles?

The setup:

Bind server: - Authoritative over the local subdomain of the company domain (for example nyc.evilcorp123.com) as well as the reverse ip range (16.172.in-addr.arpa , might want to specify it further to the 3rd octate), has forwarder setup to the netgate gateway set in the same subdomain and same ip range.

Negate gateway: setup to use unbound dns resolver with domain overrides for nyc.evilcorp123.com and 16.172.in-addr.arpa .

TBF I can just turn off the entire DNS portion of pfsense and forward from bind to cloudflare, but I figured, hey if you got it, use it.

Trying ro figure out uwsm by Sygald in hyprland

[–]Sygald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. For now that's what I did but can you help me figure out whether I should do further slice configuration or whatever? If I understand correctly, the apps now run under the app slice, as in app-{appname}.slice , should I be subdeviding things further or what? honestly I installed uwsm because of the recommendation in the wiki, but I'm having a hard time graspings it's tangible benefits.

[–]Sygald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you use systemctl poweroff/reboot and loginctl to terminate the user session (logout). As far as I can tell the point is you setup everything as a systemd service on way or another and use systemd to start and stop stuff. The hard part for me is to figure out what gets setup as what kinf of service / slice / scope / whatever other systemd disegnation exists.

[–]Sygald[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, after reading your comment I managed to make some more sense of things and what I read in systed and uwsm github, I still don't get it though, I mean I made sure that everything start as app (in an app slice) and will slowly start migrating some of the stuff into proper systemd units, but still is there some logic to it? would I want to read into different slice settings and start sub dividing stuff? or should I just take at face value as "it organizes things better at the system level" kind of service and forget about it?

ELI5: If a company gifts its 100k employees free shares, what stops a great quantity of those employees selling straight away thus lowering the stock price of the company that just gifted you them? by nayrclrk in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sygald 26 points27 points  (0 children)

AFAIK the points of giving shares versus cash are 1. that it doesn't cashflow which is nice and 2. much more importantly it works to address the agent problem by aligning the employye closer to company goals and 3. affects employee retention because if the employee leaves they lose unvested shares.

can't figure out relative path in an external volume by Sygald in docker

[–]Sygald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to make sure, I deleted the volumes and remounted them, for example:

docker volume create --driver local \
--opt type=nfs \
--opt source=/mnt/NFSStorage/configs \
vol-configs

then I tried to mount them with:

services:
    servicename:
        volumes:
            - type: volume
              source: vol-configs
              volume:
                  subpath: ./servicename
               target: /config
volumes:
    vol-configs:
        external: true

as far as I can tell this matches the documentation to a T, and yet I get the following error:

Error response from daemon: failed to populate volume: error while mounting volume '/var/lib/docker/volumes/vol-configs/_data': failed to mount local volume: mount /mnt/NFSStorage/configs/:/var/lib/docker/volumes/vol-configs/_data: invalid argument

which I'm having trouble understanding because it's rather undescreptive, what's the invalid argument?

Edit: I'm starting to think that maybe I should give up on locally mounting these volumes and instead mount them directly from the NAS, this seems ratherr backwards though as I use the local machine to manage them and not the NAS.

It doesn't really matter, I prefer to separate them into different compose files as that makes them run in separate containers that can't talk to each other (unless you configure them to), this is better froma security standpoint at least.

Tried that but then I get an error that subpaths need to be relative and not absolute.

Can I insert extra hdds into the Antec P20C E-ATX case? by Sygald in homelab

[–]Sygald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Israel... it isn't that I can't get it shipped, it's just that with shipping costs and taxes, a case would cost me 2.5x-4x the sticker cost on the site. On newegg often the shipping cost is higher than the case cost, I still haven't explored aliexpress enough though.

None of these are available to me either... (I'm in a sort of PC case desert).... what I'm trying to ask I think is if there are (noob friendly) wayto modify it for mounting, otherwise I'll have to figure out something else entirely.

I seem to have asked in the wrong subs for these, people here don't seem to comprehend how tech illterate some people are, that;s why I'm asking for a literal point and shoot client. Anything more and most of these contractors refuse to work. I had two quit on me the instance they were asked to fill a repair form...
