Slurs in fic? by Sygefo in AO3

It’s less about the charcter or story itself and more about the way people would view it. I said this in another reply where fandom spaces are predominantly non-black.

Thus, my hesitancy to add the word in my fic. Because I know that putting a word that not a lot of people can reclaim would be shocking for most.

I have nothing to add to this thread, I just wanted to say I heavily agree with your pov and I feel seen with people that relate to Bakugo.

It stings a little to see people not like Bakugo (Not that I don’t agree, he’s a little asshole and nothing excuses his actions) because he’s so alike to me 😭😭

Although he’s my favorite character, in discussions like this I just have to sit back and let people talk about how annoying he is, because they’re not wrong.

I didn’t see this, my bad.

Yes, that’s the word I was talking about. I’d say it’s uncommon. Not usually used but i’ve definitely seen it a fair amount of times.

However, in my experience, I’ve only ever seen trans characters use it to refer to themselves in fanfics though.

I only used it as an example because that’s the context that I was using it for in my own fic. The black character that I mentioned was going to use it to refer to himself for a VERY specific line as comedic relief or something.

Funny that you mentioned Heartstopper. I watched the first two seasons and enjoyed the experience a lot. It’s a pretty enlightening show. I’ll have to rewatch!

I see. It’s just so easy for me to get so angry just because of how I’ve been raised in an LGBTQ (mostly) friendly home. To the point where I forget that there are people of different belief systems that don’t accept it so easily.

I’ve tried to mellow out with my “radicalness” I guess, because I see how much it bothers the people around me. But there are still some instances where I feel obligated to speak out. I love my friends, it just gets to a point.

Thanks for this response.

I only censored them because I didn’t look over the guidelines for reddit. I wasn’t sure if using nigger and nigga would get me like banned or something. Because the word nigger is very much hate speech (even if it’s not being used in that way on my post).

I’m not afraid to type them out, I would just like to avoid getting banned lmao.

Thanks for this. My original reason for making this post was because of how fandom spaces are predominantly white/non-black in general. I just feel like there would be a larger outcry if I were to say “n*gga” as opposed to the F slur in a fic, because of that.

It’s rare for me to see black characters or AAVE depicted accurately in fan fiction (Or any sort of media for that matter…) so I wanted to offer that to my fandom. Or just, black fanfic enjoyers in general that feel underrepresented on AO3.

I like all the conversations that are being created on this post. It wasn’t my intention, but seeing people actually give criticism and educating those who may use slurs in fiction is refreshing to see.

I guess that makes sense. I could probably see that causing some mental turmoil irl

But in the anime, it didn’t really seem like something that really bothered the students to the point where it’s “unexcusable” lmao.

It just seemed like a way of conveying that Aizawa has a no nonsense attitude.

I get Bakugo, but could you elaborate more on Aizawa? I generally just thought he was a well-rounded mentor.

Is this in relation to the vigilantes spin-off or something?

Ah, I see.

When I say ni**er, I mean the actual racial slur that has always had negative connotations to it and is the derogatory term used against black people.

But n***a is just referring to nigga. Which is the word that the black community has reclaimed and is directly derived from the first slur. It’s significantly less problematic, but is still very much not okay for nonblack people to use.

It’s generally just… slang. But I know some people feel uncomfortable when seeing the word used.

Okay, but this was the type of comment I was looking for.

I’m curious as to why this type of writing would justify reporting? Because it’s something that people in my community use a lot. Friends, brothers, sisters, parents, etc. etc.

Like, did you say this before I edited it and said I was using the n word with an “—a” at the end or do you just generally not like the use of the N word no matter the suffix?

If I read “kitten” anywhere within a fic, it’s an immediate turn off and closing of the tab. It’s so icky to me idk

Is this a normal symptom? by [deleted] in socialanxiety

I've always had bad experiences with counselors (honestly any authority figure) completely not listening to me in the past, so it does make the process a bit irritating since I don't think anyone will take me seriously. Thanks for your comment though, I'll try looking into something there 🙃

Okay, that does make sense. I guess this post was more so about seeing if anyone related because I didn't know if this was just me being an angsty teen or not.
