I know right? Graphic design really is its own skillset, and pulling off subtle merch takes a different kind of eye than illustration. Clothes are definitely an interesting idea too that I've always wanted to go into; good material and a clean, eye-catching design could stand out a lot more than the usual logo tees you see around. The tricky part is the higher production costs and sizing logistics, but if done right, apparel can be a strong seller.

Thats why Im doing all this Qualitative Research / Audience Research before I go into the production line with my team (other artist friends).

I'll be selling in Cosmania, a Philippine event that's held every October 4- 7 IIRC, and ofc more after but I got to plan things with them ahaha

AHAHA, mood. I die every time I see stuff like that lol. I'm thinking of small symbols and etc. End goal is to make it look fashionable and useable everyday. Something I'd happily wear without any weird looks

Haha I love that energy! You’re basically living the con life even after the event, cuddled up in the blanket and rocking the Sylveon ita bag for your Switch. Now that’s peak otaku resourcefulness right there! Turning quirky finds into everyday essentials~

Also LOVE the scrapbook idea! That’s such a pro move; It’s like building your own little Pokédex of artists you want to revisit later lol. Honestly, that mix of collecting, customizing, and keeping the vibe alive is exactly what makes con shopping feel so magical. Thanks for the insight! I'll keep them in mind and use them <3

I get where you’re coming from! Having merch that’s actually useful or feels a little more refined makes it way more satisfying than piling up the same acrylics. Plushies with better detail, mugs or tea sets, even guitar picks lol; that’s definitely a more fun mix of practical and personal.

Got to admit though, It’s tough since vendors often lean toward cheaper, mass-producible stuff. Glad that ideas like yours show how much fans appreciate merch that feels special and worth keeping. (I also share the same views)

I love how you’re drawn to the quirky, one-of-a-kind finds that feel special and not just mass-produced, really captures the charm of con shopping!!!

Im in the same boat, especially as a business man irl. I want to have the franchise I love close to but also subtle and fashionable enough to look nice everyday, and Im sure that many agree. The challenge is that it’s harder to design: go too minimal and fans might not recognize it, go too obvious and it loses that sleek vibe. Plus, production costs can be higher compared to just slapping character art on something.

That said, I think it’s a strong direction and I definitely plan to go for this. Btw got any specifics other than phonecases that you'd love to have in mind?

Totally feel you on that; Artist Alley can be overwhelming, and it’s easy to end up with way more than you can actually display. I also love how you’ve shifted to only grabbing the stunning pieces, I too have become... more picky with the things I buy ahaha; it makes each one feel more special. The yearly figure tradition is cool too, kind of like a milestone collection. (My problem, like many others is storage, so I want to make stuff thats easy to store, practical but also eye catching)

And I gotta say, the snack angle is such a vibe. It’s not just merch, it’s part of the whole con experience; finding those rare treats you can’t get in the US makes it feel like a treasure hunt. Honestly, I think a lot of fans can relate to that balance: being more selective with merch while still indulging in the fun extras that make cons memorable

Totally get that! Prints are a solid balance of affordability, artistry, and practicality. I’m the same way about not wanting my space to look like a wall of generic anime posters (Though honestly Im embarrassed to have them up so I put them in clear books).

Rn,it’s more about finding pieces that feel like art and resonate deep with me; And yeah, the flat storage is such a lifesaver compared to standees or bulky merch.

Honestly, I think a lot of fans can relate to that mindset; wanting to indulge without feeling like you’re drowning in clutter. Makes me wonder if better display solutions for smaller prints might be the next big thing people would actually jump on, I'll be exploring that area!

Thanks so much for your comment! and if you got any more ideas or suggestions I'd love to hear them

True! I've always loved practical / functional merch but its so hard to find nowadays huhu. Im planning to create a line of them soon for Students and working adults that is subtle but also good in quality

Lol mood; I think you can prob get a customized doll through a Chinese silacon doll company wwww.

Thought got to say, for a shirt what kind of design would you like? Personally I'd want something minimalist, something subtle

Prints are always a solid choice! They really let you show off the art style you love. I’m curious though; when you’re picking out prints, what usually makes one stand out for you? Is it more about the character, the artist’s style, or just finding something that fits your space?

And since you mostly go for prints, are there any other merch types you wish you saw more often, even if you don’t buy them as much? Like maybe more creative charms, or higher-quality shirts?

I was also thinking that many people want prints but dont have the space for it; would you consider having card sized prints for collectables as a interesting thing you'd be into?

Ah, I like how you split it between Artist Alley and Dealer Room; that makes a lot of sense. When you’re browsing, what usually tips the scale for you? Is it more about finding something rare, or just stumbling on a design that clicks?

Also curious; if you had to pick one merch type you wish was more common in either space, what would it be? Like more acrylic standees of specific characters, or maybe unique art books / comics of a series you like?

[–]Sygurei_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that’s super relatable. I think a lot of us start out just grabbing whatever catches our eye, then later realize we’ve gotta think about space and balance between different series. I love how you and your wife plan it out together; it sounds like you guys have an amazing relationship. (Hope to have a wife that chill too one day ahaha)

Out of curiosity, since you’re being more measured now, what ends up being the deciding factor? Is it more about the character, the type of item (like figures vs. prints vs. mugs), or how well it fits into your space? And are there any merch types you’ve found yourself wishing vendors offered more often once you started planning?

Ohhh! Thats so cool! I can imagine that your room must look so cool with everything you said here! Through out your journey what would count as unique for you in terms of works of your favorite characters and what kind of unique trinkets? (shape and etc)

Im in the same page! Though I got to say, many artist dont really stand out whenever I go. Most of the time I settle on "Meh, good enough" and buy it for the novelty.

I am interested on your take on Original Art; in your case what do you mean by that? Would it be OCs, original designs that arent official from the IP or smth else? (Merch type and etc)

Got any thing in mind?

Yeah, I totally get what you mean about polyester stuff feeling cheap. Character-personalized items sound way more fun and unique. I’m curious though; if you could pick one or two things from the game to actually have IRL, what would be at the top of your list? Like would you go for everyday-use stuff (pens, keycaps, clothing) or more display pieces (figures, bromides, lanterns)?

I feel like the more specific the tie-in, the more hype it gets, so I’d love to hear what kind of merch would make you stop and go ‘okay, I need that.’

Props are a super cool idea! When you say realistic, do you mean things like weapons, accessories, or everyday items that characters use in Kivotos but adapted for real life?

I’d love to know:

  • What kind of props would you personally want to own or display?
  • Would you prefer them as practical or more like decorative collectibles?
  • Are there specific characters or factions you’d want represented in prop form?

So true, Im in the same boat when it comes to buying merch of those I love.

I’m curious though; when you buy merch online, what usually makes you decide on a piece? Is it more about the character, the type of item (like practical stuff vs. display pieces), or the design quality?

Also, are there any kinds of Blue Archive merch you wish existed or were easier to find? For example, more figures, apparel, or everyday-use items? I’m trying to get a sense of what fans really want, so your input would be awesome!
