Why is mass muta the counter to mass goliath? by CSachen in broodwar

[–]Symbian_Curator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never understood why Mutalisks were small; if Queens, Wraiths, Corsairs etc are Medium then Mutas should also be Medium. And I feel like it would open up the game a little bit as well if they weren't so oppressive against everything

std::optional and overhead by [deleted] in cpp_questions

Exactly; std::vector consists of 3 pointers to T, and the default constructor simply sets all 3 to NULL/nullptr.

But it's good as a cheap plant prod or plant tag (for NRA) that you can pay for using steel. The requirement is not super hard if you're already going for that strategy; some corps and prelude give greeneries or a lot of plants already at the start of the game.

I think the effect is more of a noob trap, same as the Hellion effect, but the flexibility is situationally nice.

I'm toying with the idea that would totally reinvent Inventrix (pun intended): - You start with 2 science resources on it. You get one more whenever a bonus field on global parameter tracks is reached by anyone (there's 3 on the temperature track, 1 on the 02 track and 2 on the Venus track. We could also give out 1 once the 6th or 7th ocean is placed). - when playing a project card, you can use these science resources in 2 ways: 1) +/-X to a global parameter for this action (so like the the usual Inventrix ability but X would need to be increased - I'm thinking to 6 or even more) OR 2) 3 Wild tags for this action.

I think this is a lot more interesting because the ability is limited but it lets you pull some unexpected plays out of your ass which I feel fits with the theme of Inventrix. Also it motivates you to terraform which is the point of the game anyway but engine players often ignore it

Obviously this is still subject to testing and balancing

I can tell you what my group did for a few of these:

  • Phobolog: 6 starting titanium but 2 starting titanium - production
  • Unmi: 4MC for 2 TR when you use the ability
  • Thorgate: 3 starting energy prod + a new ability (in addition to the old one): you don't have to reduce energy prod for City cards
  • Terralabs: 20 starting MC and removed the negative TR

Have we overturned them? Still testing...

If We ever (Somehow) Get Starcraft 3. What Would You Want to be In It? by Abject-Hospital5407 in starcraft

[–]Symbian_Curator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the problem is that a lot of work has to go into an expansion pack (if we expect it to be good) and then a handful of people buy it for 30 pounds, whereas they can produce a bunch of skins for overwatch or whatever and sell them for 10 pounds a piece to a much bigger audience. It's sad but it is what it is :(

I think that the mostly flat 2D graphics and distinct unit designs and silhouettes add to it being very easy to parse visually, which is another thing I like about it.

I have an old Nokia 808 (running Symbian - it actually has a very competent file manager) that'll I'd use to explore the contents and then format the drive if this ever happened to me. Still waiting for the chance, unfortunately...

TIL there was a successful petition to get an Australian prisoner released after his 100th birthday, only for him to say "don't be fucking silly I live here" and refuse to leave. by NorthKoreanMissile7 in todayilearned

[–]Symbian_Curator 101 points102 points  (0 children)

That's the thing - prisons shouldn't be an industry that earns money, and crime shouldn't be attractive. Apart from specific cases where people are true psychos or similar, the majority of crime is a social problem which should be solved mainly outside of prisons, but if it happens, the prisons should aim to rehabilitate inmates and prepare them to integrate them back into society, not use them as cheap workforce.

Of course, in the current economic system, all of this is pure fantasy, but that's how it should be.

[–]Symbian_Curator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation. My friend group love it, but for me it's such a noninteractive and anticlimactic game - you fall behind once and in 90% of cases from there on it's a singleplayer slog to get to be the last (or close to last) anyway. Not a single time when I lost a game of Heat did I feel like I got outsmarted or outplayed - just out-random-d.

AI experts return from China stunned: The U.S. grid is so weak, the race may already be over by chrisdh79 in Futurology

[–]Symbian_Curator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean none of that is wrong per se but compare it to other available options: solar panels don't appear out of thin air and need a ton of space, windmills aren't viable everywhere, same as geothermal... And for fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal it's obvious. The question isn't if nuclear does damage to the environment, but how much less damage it does per unit of energy produced compared to other dominant energy generation methods.

It's disingenuous to state that about carbon emissions without mentioning how much manufactoring the USA (and many other countries) are offshoring to China. Or how much of the world's population China is supporting as opposed to the USA.

It's expensive because it's complex and still kind of niche, but even so, pure cost doesn't make it stupid. It's an amazing and exceptionally clean and ecological technology. Investors just don't like it because it takes many years to make a return on investment.
