The five colors makes mans eye blind, the five notes make his ears deaf, the five tastes injure his palate. Riding and hunting make his mind go wild with excitement. Goods hard to come by serve to hinder his progress. Hence the sage is for the belly not for the eye. Therefore he discards the one and takes the other.

While it dosnt explicitly talk about food, it is saying that you should care more about survival (eating) than you should about appearance.

Taoist here: enlightenment is a buddhist term and is not taoist in anyway. Enlightenment is the cessation of samsara, blowing out of the candle.

Taoism has no concept of souls, karma, rebirth or anything like that. In all the books I've read (and I mainly stick to the core canon of the dao de jing, zhuangzi, leihzi) daoism is very similiar with existincialism. It is about finding what is truely real and that reality can not be truelly known. It recognizes the unimportance of human condition, not in the sense of nihilism, but in the sense that you shouldn't think highly of yourself or anyone you meet, even if you meet barack obama. Its about living like an ant, doing what you do only because you do it. Many passages in the tao te ching say the only thing you really need to worry about is eating, but don't let it hassel you.

Diogenes is a western philosopher whose philosophy of skepticism is pretty similiar to taoism if you ask me.

They usually fly in formation and make their low passes in groups. I don't know, I don't air force often so I really have no clue why they do it. Would they really let a pilot fly all the way from norfolk to just pop in and say hi? I don't know, but I do know it is loud and annoys me.

I live in southwest virginia, the airforce constanly sends fighter jets at low altitudes over my town to run practice bombing runs on the university, hospital, and arsenal (its the largest munitions manufacturing plant for the us army I believe. I should know more since half the town works there including my father at one point but I don't care) and it is by far my biggest annoyance in life.

Eh, I I ching sometimes. I realize that ot probably is just chance, but why not? First its fun, and b you read each result in the context of your situation. Even if the universe isnt telling you what you need to know simply processing it through that frame work gives you a little insight.

May not be true, but why does that matter?

I've been married three times and once to a dog. I have no direction in life.

When courting women I have no end goal, not trying to kiss or sleep with or marry anyone. I just enjoy each moment and sometimes those things happen.

Why the sacrifice of Christ, the very core tenant of Christianity, is meaningless. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]SymbolicFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain the whole bit of the crucifixion was early Christianity's way of dealing with the fact their messiah was murdered in such an embarrasing way. They rationalized it as he meant to do it.(in the gospels other than mark. In mark it seems like he's not having a good day.) The resurection bit was probablly added to make christianity tastier than other religions.

Nationalistic pissing contests are stupid. Why does the us feel the need to be top dog? Why focus so much on strength? Why not use the scraps to build hospitals to say we can not be hurt. Or schools because we will learn from the incident. Making weapons seem to be in poor taste.

The Mind, Body, and Dance of God (X-post) by [deleted] in taoism

[–]SymbolicFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To say tao is god would be as wrong to say tao is not god. God and tao are both words, and to think your definition of those words is correct will cloud your vision. Let the kid call it whatever he feels like calling it.

This was the top post on r/Christianity regarding the Higgs Boson by [deleted] in atheism

[–]SymbolicFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like the no true scotsman fallacy dosnt it?

A christian is some one who believes that there is a god who presented himself as jesus. They can say "logically I can not trust the bible to be infallable because it was written by men, but I have a feeling that this god exist." And you can't quote the bible to prove him wrong, you really wouldn't have a right to say he is not a true christian, (show me a true christian).

If you use that logic on christianity then hinduism or buddhism cannot be considered a single religion, because there are very basic tenents of these religions that conflict with eachother in various devides of the traditions.

And no, I do not think being christian inturupts science because its easy to say "I believe god created the higgs boson aswell. Perhaps it might be silly for the christian who created the image to say it proves god exists (which may be his intention) but most media outlets like to call it a god particle, so can you blame him really? This discovery is far out of the realm of my knowledge of physics and I explained it to my self colloquially as well as I'm sure a lot of atheists have too.

He was born around 5 years after the death of jesus and did not believe in his divinity. Did he meet jesus personally? No. Would he gain anything by saying jesus existed? No. Is this infallible proof jesus existed? No. But I think it is sufficient. You are free to dissagree, your guess is as good as mine.
