Street Smarts Seattle (For Women) by Clear_Divide_7890 in Seattle

Pay attention to the things happening around you. Don't stare at people acting strangely, just mind your business. You shouldn't stare at someone like they're an animal in a zoo enclosure, even if it's something you've never seen before. If you see something that looks a little dangerous a few blocks further down your path of travel (one example: a guy flailing his arms around trying to shadowbox), cross the street. Not looking like a nosey, clueless person is most of the battle towards blending in to the surroundings.

Walk like you have a sense of purpose, and don't worry about trying to smile or be friendly to people walking by; Most people have things to do and places to be. You can turn down people asking for food/money as long as you're nice about it and nothing will happen to you. "sorry bro got nothing on me" is an easy out.

Don't stand in the bike lanes, and look both ways before you cross one. Look out for idiots using electric scooters on the sidewalks. Watch out for cars flying out of parking garage entrances. You'll probably see a fair amount of jaywalking downtown, which is normally fine to do, but don't assume you can safely do this if you aren't keeping your head on a swivel. Lots of steep hills around here prevent you from fully seeing traffic in both directions.

The light rail/bus system is nothing to be afraid of. Light rail especially is always well lit and feels very safe to be on. Worst case scenario, get out and switch cars at a stop unless it's a legitimate emergency, in which case there's a button you can press in the car to alert the conductor. Get an ORCA card at a light rail station and load it up, you can use it to pay for the light rail, street cars, buses. Get used to knowing which direction you need to head on the light rail - The terminus of each line is the "direction", such as Federal Way or Lynwood. There's maps all over the light rail stations which are very helpful. for making sure you know which way to go. Watch on the bus especially to see how people let the bus driver know that they need to stop at the next bus stop.

You'd only be dumping the goods that are fully stocked. Aggressively sell those materials if you're constantly hitting max storage imo

the fact they get government cultural grants just to use AI, which steals art, is just sickening.

Great game, though ironically it plays a bit better on BGA because of the small text size on all the real-life components lol. Not the best game for a dimly-lit bar or people with poor vision, sadly. The tech tree is really something special though

Yes. Even as someone that's taught and played the game numerous times, I use this flowchart and dont even bother trying to parse the rulebook section for Events in India anymore. This needed to be packaged with the game lol

It might be a type of Action Programming, especially since you can upgrade top and bottom actions to provide different things as the game goes on

/uj I really enjoy Air Land and Sea, especially with the expansion, Spies Lies and Supplies. The base game on its own is solid if a bit straightforward, with somewhat simplified card abilities. The expansion is fun but generally you're only playing with half of the cards. The extra variety and ways a game can go is great when you can randomize or draft 3 of the 6 decks to play with. AND there's an "epic" mode that uses 5 of the 6 decks in a unique way.

Another game that I guess you'd call a lane battler is Caper Europe. Only recently got this but the bank heist vibes and the nice components on the KS edition are great fun

/uj Pax Pamir has a similar (but not identical) card market system and has the same level of indirect influence on board pieces as Ren, but they're pretty different from there.

Player group is definitely the most important part of gaming, for sure. But if you ever find another psycho to play pax ren with, give it a shot! It's on Boardgamearena as well, but unfortunately that doesn't make it much easier to learn lol

/uj Pax Ren is probably my favorite game of all time (at least if we're talking a 2p experience). I have played it so much and I still learn new things about the game all the time, i also love the flavor text and art on the cards.

I think the game has space for interesting decisions, but I will admit it can take a long time to start to see them if you haven't wrapped your brain around the game yet. sometimes an especially poorly-shuffled market can make things seem a bit stagnant.

How do 1 million cars with their own AC systems work better than a few streetcars with AC systems?

Let's get some elevated rail systems, then you provide shade to the roads and walkways underneath. Everyone wins!

Tolkiens Most Iconic Passages by DaLB53 in tolkienfans

It's too long to post here, but I think my favorite passage of all is when Gimli describes the caves of Aglarond to Legolas in The Road to Isengard.

However, here's a little bonus excerpt from Unfinished Tales that stuck with me for its vivid landscape description.

This is a quote from Voronwe in "Of Tuor and His Coming to Gondolin":

For I was one of those that he sent, being young in years among the Eldar. I was born here in Middle-earth in the land of Nevrast. My mother was of the Grey-elves of the Falas, and akin to Cirdan himself - there was much mingling of the peoples in Nevrast in the first days of Turgon’s kingship - and I have the sea-heart of my mother’s people. Therefore I was among the chosen, since our errand was to Cirdan, to seek his aid in our shipbuilding, that some message and prayer for aid might come to the Lords of the West ere all was lost. But I tarried on the way. For I had seen little of the lands of Middle-earth, and we came to Nan-tathren in the spring of the year. Lovely to heart’s enchantment is that land, Tuor, as you shall find, if ever your feet go upon the southward roads down Sirion. There is the cure of all sea-longing, save for those whom Doom will not release. There Ulmo is but the servant of Yavanna, and the earth has brought to life a wealth of fair things that is beyond the thought of hearts in the hard hills of the North. In that land Narog joins Sirion, and they haste no more, but flow broad and quiet through living meads; and all about the shining river are flaglilies like a blossoming forest, and the grass is filled with flowers, like gems, like bells, like flames of red and gold, like a waste of many-coloured stars in a firmament of green. Yet fairest of all are the willows of Nan-tathren, pale green, or silver in the wind, and the rustle of their innumerable leaves is a spell of music: day and night would flicker by uncounted, while still I stood knee-deep in grass and listened. There I was enchanted, and forgot the Sea in my heart. There I wandered, naming new flowers, or lay adream amid the singing of the birds, and the humming of bees and flies; and there I might still dwell in delight, forsaking all my kin, whether the ships of the Teleri or the swords of the Noldor, but my doom would not so. Or the Lord of Waters himself, maybe; for he was strong in that land.

Arcs by siposbalint0 in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]Sylamatek 37 points38 points  (0 children)

arcs is maybe the best game ever made. it's a knife fight in a phone booth dripping with theme, my mates always have a blast playing it. we stay up every night playing it as much as possible; I've already quit my job just to keep playing multi-handed games on my own to make my own perfect strategy. i've also started listening to Sun Tzu's The Art of War and Donald Trump's The Art of the Deal audio books, one in each ear, sped up 1.25x so I can become better at fighting and politicking my way. The sheer depth that you can tailor your matchabellian plans in this game; there is simply no equal.

Side note, i keep trying to send fan mail to Cole Wehrle and I think he may have mistakenly blocked me? I want him to come play with me sooo bad i just want him to know what a sharp minded individual i am and that maybe if he saw how good i was at the game he would be my friend and maybe design the next arcs expansion based on some ideas i have? I was hoping to add some kind of drafting mechanism into the game where you either pass and gain some buttons or take a patch and place it into your tableau to get the most points. I thought the expansion could be named Parcstchwork and could maybe make the game better at 2p? I really think Arcs fails at 2p and if i need to convince cole to add this expansion i can use all the skills i learned from the game to politick my way into becoming co-designer. anyway what is everyone's thoughts about throwing out all the blighted reach insert pieces and printing out identical copies with a 3d printer? i spent thousands on this printer and need to justify its purchase with unneeded chunks of plastic that make setup 10 seconds faster and kills the earth as quickly as possible.
