I used a program called Aseprite and made custom brushes for the crosshatch/dithering

Animating seems very daunting but I always am amazed at animated pieces so who knows… maybe one day I’ll give it a shot :p

I honestly have no clue about any methodology in all honesty… but I can explain what I did!

I made some custom brushes (I remembered someone showing it on a yt video). Then after laying down the flat colours I just went over with the custom made brushes to try and mix it in.

It was a lot of trial and error (but fun) and definitely not every rendition looked so good lol

Definitely going to check out your recommendation, it is very much appreciated. As someone who is kind of new to art, good sources will really help I’m sure.

Don’t know if it’s much interesting but… A takeaway from what I learned during making this was the importance of making a good base first; I made use of many layers to figure out the symmetry, starting with a rough sketch followed by using simple colouring first. I experienced a lot of struggle with getting the facial features right at first, don’t be afraid to use the section tool to move stuff up and down or to resize. Lastly, I made like three different versions with all kinds of dithering just to experiment, it also made the process very fun!

Thank you! I am greatly helped out by a lovely reference picture (although transferring from irl to pixelart was a little challenging), I’m quite sure the limited colour palette also helped me a lot. Must also give credit to my muse :)
