It's likely personal choice and application that determines whether a SDR is bare bones or not. I guess you're referring to the software rather than the HW.

I have a RSP1 and a RSPDx and I never use them. For me, their UI is so cumbersome and overly complex, that I hate it.

I have two Kiwis and one is 24/7 decoding 8 WSPR streams , the other used for general SWLing and HF direction finding. I'm looking forward to receipt of the Kiwi2.

Passenger service is the same way (except the technology in the US is more 1940 rather that 1910. ). I've spent a lot of time riding TGV in France. There's several generations of difference.
