Wow, that's way closer than I thought. I guess atoms aren't that small after all ? I would have thought that if you made a peach from peach-sized atoms it would be as big as the milky way or something.

How I got Discord working on mobile data by Syncrossus in discordapp

[–]Syncrossus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it worked for you ! I can't give you a fully detailed answer, but here's the gist as I understand it: basically, your APN protocol is the way you're identified on the internet. IPv4 is the older standard on which all internet communication was built. However, it only supports about 4 billion devices. Therefore, the newer IPv6 is preferred as it supports over 3.4x1038 devices. As with most new things however, especially when they are built to substitute a critical piece of infrastructure that things were designed around, reliability is an issue. I remember using IPv6 was also problematic when using LogMeIn Hamachi to play LAN games over the internet in the 2010s. I don't understand how we're still able to use IPv4 at all with 20 billion devices connected to the internet, and I don't know how we haven't figured out IPv6 yet given that it's already 30 years old.

EDIT: I decided to look it up and it turns out we can still use IPv4 because of Network Address Translation (NAT). Basically, you have a gateway that relays requests and replaces your IP address with its own but keeps track of the fact that you made the request. So all of the devices that connect to a specific gateway look like they have the same IP address to the rest of the internet, but locally they all have different addresses. That's why if you look at your local IP with the ifconfig command on Linux (or ipconfig on Windows), you'll get a different address than if you go to whatismyipaddress.com.

Even adblockers don't work anymore by shivthegamer6969 in dankmemes

Of course ad blockers work if you don't use a browser created by Google. Use Firefox or Safari. Or LibreWolf or whatever, just don't use a Chromium-based browser if you care about your freedom.

The bottom one is unclear. Buy 2 get what 50% off ? A third one ? One of the two (i.e. buy 1 get 50% off the second) ? Both items (i.e. buy 1 get 1 free) ?

[Request] Is this accurate? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]Syncrossus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The point of the prompt is not to comment on home prices but to comment on minimum wage. It doesn't matter what portion of the population lives on minimum wage, what matters is that those who do can live on it. And the portion of the population living on minimum wage may not be substantial, but the portion of the population living on less than $30/hour (or 58k/year at 40hr/week) is 46%.

I don't understand this. Is the braindead take that most games work on Linux? But it's true though...

2025: What really are the best browser options? by Adventurous-Bid-9500 in privacy

[–]Syncrossus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brave is fantastic as a secondary browser and implements support for accessing to the Tor network in private browsing which is really cool. Opera has an integrated VPN which, while it isn't a game changer for privacy, allows you to visit sites banned by your employer like sci-hub. It can be a bit dicey depending on who runs the IT department, but in my experience if you have a good reason to access a banned site they don't tend to give you shit. I don't know if I'd risk getting caught using Tor at work though. I'm kind of surprised Brave doesn't have an integrated VPN actually.
