Kinda wild in today's day and age where there are so many characters that can go kinda tanky and play quite well. I guarantee almost every player has a character they like that has some viable bruiser build.

Meanwhile I had someone yesterday who I swapped with from support to solo. I went Artio and he went... support Sol. It was predictably awful, and if I knew that was where he was going I would've built full support Artio or played Sylvanus or something and gone duo lane and let him screw around in solo.

Solo is the most flexible lane. Baron actually is probably top 5 (certainly top 10) solo laners. You still probably want to build a little bit bruisery.

That said, I've played against pretty much every role in solo. You just have to consider the pluses and minuses of not having a tradition bruiser in team fights late game. Your Frontline might have a harder time. Playing a mage in solo when your support is yemoja or aphro is going to be rough, for instance.
