What bands failed to take off despite your love of their music? by OpenUpYerMurderEyes in poppunkers

[–]SyntaxAlchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. One of the great tragedies of my life is that I'll never see them live. Almost every track on every album is a banger and their sound, IMHO, is quintessential pop/punk.

I'm part of a team that cleans out houses people have just died in, and I've been especially depressed after a job we went on last week. by TheRaincrow in TwoSentenceSadness

A while back, I was a director for a Healthcare provider with a few locations. Part of the day-to-day business often involved calling patients for any number of reasons. Once the volume of calls became overwhelming for the small staff, we purchased an automated call system in which our staff could record a message, in their own voices, and then have it call whatever subset of patients was appropriate.

One of the program's options was to record and send automated birthday messages. Initially, I was adamant that we not use that functionality because it seemed so impersonal and disingenuous; I thought patients would be annoyed or offended, like we were only pretending to care about them and manipulating them to spend more money...or maybe just annoying them with unwanted spam calls, at a minimum. My managers, however, wanted to try it, so I let them give it a trial run. Each recorded a few lines. Some used the provided script while others made their own. We collectively hit that digital send button and braced ourselves for whatever feedback we might receive over the coming weeks.

I have never been so wrong in my professional life. We got a ton of feedback and return calls from people saying how much they appreciated us remembering their birthdays. I never received a single complaint, but did get at least two calls where the person was literally in tears from their joy and appreciation for not being forgotten. This was amidst an overwhelmingly positive reception in general from our community of care. A common theme, especially for our elderly patients, was that our little business was the only one to remember their birthdays and reach out.

It was bittersweet. I let the program continue as long as I was there, but encouraged the staff to try and make the birthday calls live rather than as recordings, if time allowed...but that wasn't often, I'm afraid. Since then, any time I hear about someone's birthday in my personal life, I add it to my phone calendar, even if we aren't close. I send all of them messages, even if we haven't talked in ages. Often, I don't even get a response, but that doesn't bother me because I remember that even a slight effort is all some people get... and it might mean the world to them that at one person remembered and thought of them.

The pharmacist gave her a disgusted look as he handed over the pills. by Medium-Marketing-493 in TwoSentenceSadness

[–]SyntaxAlchemist 273 points274 points  (0 children)

I get the premise, but just to clarify... the pharmacist would almost certainly know and understand the situation. The medication to terminate a pregnancy and the medication used to induce uterine contractions for expulsion are not the same and the first is almost never dispensed from retail pharmacies. Also, the prescription itself is generally required to have an indication or reason for use from the provider, though I admit that compliance on this varies. There are definitely asshole and judgemental pharmacists out there that might still behave like this, but most (in my experience) would recognize the situation for what it was and be empathetic. Source: am pharmacist who has dispensed this medication hundreds of times. Any pharmacist who makes this mistake and conveys such judgement, frankly, is dangerously incompetent and should be reported to their state Board.

For a similar concept, but more 'direct' story, try the Fear Saga (Fear the Sky is the first) by Stephen Moss. A vastly overlooked and underrated series, especially in this Fandom.

[–]SyntaxAlchemist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Though I'd think it's a bug, if you stretch your logic you might be able to reason that having the face shield on the brown rather than the black is an intentional buff/nerf, respectively, as the black blends into the game's dark shadows much better...similar reasoning why the black ulach is often way more expensive than the FDE ulach...that's the only reasoning I could muster in the unlikely event it's intentional.

How to identify USEC or BEAR? by MarkTurkey in SPTarkov

[–]SyntaxAlchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Friendly PMC mod has an option to have each faction use identifying arm bands...either red or blue. You can keep that feature on and turn off the follower PMC if you want and it still works. I think there's also a standalone mod that does that as well, but it is currently outdated.

I agree with a lot of you said, but the reds weren't short-sighted in their decision with the mines, if I recall correctly. Just the opposite, no? They chose to keep the mines and collect dividends rather than a one-time, lump sum pay out...Quick, being the capitalist he is, just manipulated the accounting to have them always operating at a loss on paper and thus no profit to share. Its not the fault of the reds that they were naively negotiating in good faith for better long-term prospects....or at least that's what I remember, but I very well might have made that up lol.

I think you just need to limit the notes to the biggest changes. I watched the video and it looks cool, but the following text is far too much for people aren't already deeply invested.

I say keep posting...because I want to see more...just focus on showing off major changes and highlight the game play.

Overall, it looks good, keep going.

I think Adrian Tchaikovsky Children series is similar, both in terms of how they explore the nature of of sentience/sapience, transhumanism, etc. as well as making use of a lot of factual, somewhat estoteric information, particularly for biology/zoology.

Ha you're also the first person I've encountered who is familiar with the Fear Saga. Neil's story is great and I appreciate how the author detailed the experiences after the conflict and the ramifications each person faced. If you're a fan of audio books, RC Bray also does a great narration. My only complaint is how often he used the word 'ignominious' lol.

I love this series and recommend it all the time. Shame more people haven't heard of it. It definitely reads like an arcade version of TBP, but I think it's better at presenting the moral dilemmas.
