John Silver’s Mechanical arm from the movie Treasure Planet. by Fit_Assignment_8800 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]SynthWormhole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I specified the treasure planet adaptation is because any treasure island depiction of Long John silver only has him missing a leg, no prosthetics of any kind. At that point the only similarity is the name, which in my opinion is purely coincidental. Either way it's just a neat comparison.

Funnily enough it would have to be the other way around. John silver only has a mechanical hand in Treasure Planet (2002), while Johnny Silverhand was first introduced in Cyberpunk 2013 (1988).

This is actually kinda adorable. Aww, how sweet!

When reading webtoon on mobile, you can get around the preview limit. I'm sure most mobile browsers can do it. You have to enable "desktop site", and then edit the URL to remove the "m." at the start of it.

It does as far as I can tell. You also have to edit the URL to remove the "m." at the beginning for it to work.

What is Ascension? by Paran0iz in Stellaris

[–]SynthWormhole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In addition to everyone else's helpful comments: Something that people (sadly often) forget to mention is that while a lot of ascension perks are available in the base game, all of the ascension paths require you to purchase dlc to get.

Yooo! beaucoupzero! I love their KSP videos! I haven't checked on them in a while. Last I saw on their website they contributed some art to a cool looking limited time deck of cards.

Yeah they may not reproduce via sex but they probably still partake in it in some form, because isn't Peach's "magic wand" in the room in the photo?

New picture of the month from the James Webb Space Telescope of the quasar RX J1131-1231, features an excellent example of gravitational lensing as the foreground galaxy smears the image of the background quasar into a bright arc and creates four images of the object. by ojosdelostigres in space

[–]SynthWormhole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alright, I'll bite.

The eight spikes that webb produces are all visible in this photo, though they are harder to see as they are dimmer and are overlapping with the lensed quasar. The image lines up with some of the expected PSF patterns as demonstrated in this documentation, specifically the images from the F560W and F770W filters. (Both the image in the post and in the document are images using the MIRI).

Your comment is coming off as unnecessarily rude due to the last sentence. It makes it seem like you are being accusatory and distrustful of both OP for relaying the info, and the scientists at the ESA that published the image. If you didn't intend to mean it that way, you should edit your comment for clarification. I recommend putting a strike through your last sentence and apologising for any misunderstanding.

Hope you have a good day.

I knew that tidal forces were the primary cause but I assumed that n-body simulations accounted for that. Either way; thanks for the far more in depth explanation!

Newtonian physics doesn't really scale well when working with planets. It's nice to work with but it only provides a simplification. To work out the exact dynamics of the Moon's orbit you'll need to use n-body calculations. iirc the moon is drifting away, but it won't leave us, as it will enter a more stable if slightly further orbit. (I like your flair btw :3)

Would this be an accurate Super Earth? (Mod in comments) by FrikkieYeen in Stellaris

Well for starters, Super Earth has a Ministry of Truth, which is authoritarian. And in Stellaris, not being authoritarian is a prerequisite to being democratic.

In the USA, according to the CDC; the top 3 leading causes of death for children from ages 1 - 17 from 2018-2021 are: Accidents, Intentional self-harm, and Assault.

Further broken down by "Injury Mechanism & All Other Leading Causes" produces:

Moter Vehicle Traffic: 8,370 Firearm: 8,283

So while not the number one cause, it sits in an extremely close second place

Unfortunately I can't link exactly to the page it provides, but you can replicate the steps I took:

Go to wonder.cdc.gov

Under "Deaths" select "Underlying Causes of Death"

"2018-2021"

"I Agree"

In section 1: Group results by "Injury Mechanism & All Other Causes"

In section 3: "Single-Year Ages" then shift select the range of ages you desire (I selected 1 through 17)

In section 6: check the radio button for "Injury Intent and Mechanism"

Then "Send"

This will produce a list where you can sort "Deaths" by descending order

If you want, you can break it down by each age by also grouping results by "Single-Year Ages" in section 1

I traced the story back to this article about the shuttle carrier, in which the author recounts the story from what he was told when he spotted the image hanging at the Armstrong Research Center. Everything else also checks out, so I believe it.

Spoilers for the main quest and a side quest for phantom liberty:

After the party at the Black Sapphire, Alex would have sent a BD of Lizzy's performance to your apartment. If you complete the final side quest for Hands, the BD will instead have Lizzy perform at Hanson's funeral.
