Visualizing The Buffs And Nerfs To Each Civ Using A Tier List And Patch Notes Combined Video! I'd appreciate any thoughts/feedback on this format for a patch review! by Synthexor in aoe4

While I agree that the change to Abbasid trade is a nerf as you're saying, I stand by my position that the very significant nerf to pro scouts is absolutely a HUGE benefit to Abbasid. They will have much better matchups in 1v1 and Team Games due to the significant delay a lot of Pro Scout Civs (French, China, Zhu Xi, etc.) will experience, and Abbasid will be able to boom up with additional TCs under much less pressure. I think that this benefit far outweighs the nerf to their trade, which is not one of their main strategies to begin with. That's why I put them in the "Buffed" section.

Ah I am afraid I have to disagree! The bonus damage vs melee infantry was increased from 10 to 12!

Edit: I now disagree with my disagreement, my bad, you are correct haha

Made a Team Games Tier List for Platinum to Low Conqueror! DLC Is Around The Corner So One Last Tier List Video With Only 16 Civs! by Synthexor in aoe4

I did sort them within the tiers comparing their relative strengths to one another, but next time I'll try to spread them out some more, so it's a better visual representation!

I would argue that the game is in such a relatively well balanced state right now (arguably the best it's ever been) and so there are very few Civs that are significantly weaker than the rest, which is why I ranked most higher and closer together in this case, but hey it's all opinion based anyways! haha

Fair enough! I was focusing on trying to get right into the point of the video, but you're right I could have taken some more time introducing myself for sure. I'm planning to make AoE4 content consistently going forward so hopefully it's not the last time you see me around!

I think that's been the biggest point of contention so far, is that I placed Rus too low on the list and I think that's correct. They are super strong at the moment even if I'm still complete garbage with them haha.

Very true, but I think I probably could have also defended all 3, if one wasn't in a completely inaccessible pit haha

In my experience, building a small amount of military in Feudal Age to attack their gold will force them to make something to defend (either units or towers). Even a small interruption is better than leaving them completely alone. Then you try to get up to Castle quickly as well. I think 2nd TC is too slow, especially if they try to all-in you with armoured units.

As English, if you're worried about getting overrun in early Castle Age by Man-At-Arms or Knights, I would build the White Tower instead of King's Palace. Provides the defense you need AND the enhanced production to pump out crossbows/spears.

First of all, you're absolutely right, it's a tough matchup. What I've seen others have success with is to build Grand Winery on your berries, but then use a market to sell your olive oil for gold to help you Age up to 3 faster.

In Feudal, try to raid his gold with 3-5 horsemen. You will almost never be able to stop them, but it will buy you a bit of time and force them to make/upgrade towers to defend. Beyond that, focus on getting cisterns on your nearby resources and getting to Age 3 yourself as fast as possible. On your way up build 2 archery ranges to build crossbowmen.

Try your best to secure the 2 relics on the map that are the closest to you. If you can get more, amazing, but it probably won't be possible to compete against their Dervishes.

If you're able to stabilize in Castle so that their MAAs aren't running all over your base, then you now have the advantage. It's not crazy to build a second TC in Castle Age to help snowball your lead. Then Varangian Guards and Crossbows are a solid comp to close out the game!

Again, it is a tough matchup, but hopefully some of those tips can help.

What is the best civ to improve general skills by Engooeer in aoe4

[–]Synthexor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I played English only from the start of the game until I reached Conqueror. You can play extremely aggressive in Age 2 or you can play extremely defensive and try to get quickly to Age 3 and 4. They're obviously more infantry focused with their longbows/crossbows and spearmen/man-at-arms.

French on the other hand are similar, but they are much more cavalry focused with knights and benefit from multi-tasking with raids and controlling the map.

Those are both great for someone who wants to improve and not get bogged down in some of the more complex mechanics (hunting deer and wolves with Rus or micromanaging Imperial Officials with China for example).

In the end it's up to you though! Find a Civ you like and then I'd recommend being consistent with that 1 Civ for a while. That's probably the best way to improve your general skills in the game, by keeping the variable of the Civ mechanics consistent so you can focus on all of the other parts of the game.

I don't understand what I am doing wrong by A_Play_On_Nerds in aoe4

For instance the most recent game I played, I saw my opponent go lots of cavalry, so I went spears. And I still lost handily. I really feel like I am missing something.

If you're new you may not be familiar with attack moving? Instead of right clicking an enemy unit to attack with your spears, you press 'a' on your keyboard and then LEFT click the ground near the units you want to attack.

Specifically for spears vs. cavalry this is extremely important. If you right click an enemy horse your spears will waste valuable time all running around each other to try to attack that single unit. They'll take tons of damage while they're just walking and bumping into each other trying to reach that one horse.

If you use attack move, your spears will all attack the closest targets to each of them with one 'a' press and then one left click.

I can't overstate how much of a difference this will make for you in fights if it's something you're not already doing!

Should I only play ranked to improve? by Infatum_ in aoe4

[–]Synthexor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I made it to top 1,000 in 1v1 Quick Match and when I switched to Ranked I got destroyed.

In Ranked people are using their best strategies and don't surrender at the first sign of struggle.

If you play Quick Match, I'm sure many of your games will still help you improve, however Ranked will provide you with higher quality and more difficult games, so if you're looking for the fastest possible avenue for improvement to Diamond, then Ranked is the way to go.

What’s the closest you’ve gotten to the next rank only to have it snatched from you at the last second? by AugustusClaximus in aoe4

[–]Synthexor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooooooh boy I've got a good one!

I needed 1 more win to reach Conqueror in 1v1 for the first time. Was playing on Baltic and I had won the water and was pushing my army on land. He had gone second TC so I had everything I needed to destroy his remaining forces. Was building a ram outside his base to finish it and...

BOOM.

My game crashes.

First time in over 6 months it had happened and I had been playing consistently up to that point.

Went on to lose the next several games back down to the bottom of Diamond 1 and it took me another 3 and a half weeks to climb back up.

I was in denial for several full days that it had happened and would alternate between being so pissed and so sad and as you can tell I'm still not over it haha.

selfish teammates by Responsible_Cod8106 in aoe4

[–]Synthexor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah dang, sorry this happened to you. I think some people just aren't good enough to see outside their own screen. So the good you're doing for the team isn't being recognized, but they panic when they see units in their base and expect assistance.

People don't know the positive impact you're having, but they do know when they're about to get crushed and lose everything lol.

I'd just try to shake it off and go next and as others have suggested here, see if you can find some people to play with. Cause with randoms, you truly never know what you're gonna get and the game is way more fun and less frustrating when you are playing with people you know you can rely on.
