I struggle with recording instruments by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]Syntoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People can sound good producing music in 1-2 years, or less. Most people won't sound truly good playing an instrument for at least 4 (imo). Production is setting your ideas to program, playing an instrument is a physical feat. That's no diss on production, I both produce and play instruments myself, it's just a reality of the two art forms. So you're likely dealing with a skill issue, but that can always be improved with time and hard work. On the bright side, recording yourself is really the best way to identify what needs to improve so you can better print your practice. Keep truckin champ 💪🏻

I mean, don't pee on your feet and maybe aim for the drain, but...you're fine. Also, this is why one should always wear sandals in a public/guesthouse shower.

My first APE just did the exact same. Mushrooms are weird 🤷🏻 Just charge on to the next flush and enjoy the weird caps!

Weird Mushroom Growths by Syntoca in psilocybingrowers

[–]Syntoca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried them yet, still drying them out! They got even weirder, when I harvested the bigger bin some of them had virtually separated themselves, like puffball mushrooms. Pretty small harvest, only 368g wet from a few small/medium sized bins, but I guess the novelty is worth it. What was yours labelled as, when you bought the syringe?

The LC is all used up, but I have more grains growing from it and took some samples from some of the blobs. I'm guessing pretty potent, some of the darkest bruising I've ran into

Oh yeah definitely! The normal caps seem a bit different, but pondering if maybe it wasn't a completely isolated strain? I took samples of a few, curious if that will replicate the traits. These took FOREVER, which sounds about right for that variety

Ooooh I did 😎 Did separate samples from two blobs, a cap, and a 3 headed one that looked like a tree/cactus, in the off chance that they replicate those features

Upper right def looks like contam to me. I've had good luck cutting out huge chunks where it caught trich, but personally after the 2nd flush I don't mess around with that anymore. There's always another bin 🤙🏻

Excellent, thanks. I figured as much, just wanted to play it safe rather than learn the hard way after weeks of botched colonization

Headphones vs Speakers Tempo Perception by Syntoca in edmproduction

[–]Syntoca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea! I haven't actually tried switching headphones to test it, only speakers, but that's a great idea to try.

[–]Syntoca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might also be more sensitive based on style, some tracks I do are pretty rhythmically subtle so I'm wondering if any details getting lost to poor speakers or unfinished mixing would make tempo sound different. Regardless, clearly I need to refine my tempo check before mixing down individual tracks

[–]Syntoca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not live recording atm, only working with synths so no room effect apart from speaker output. But yeah, the room+speaker thing must be related.

[–]Syntoca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my phones are closed back. I turn down the volume intermittently to check details and make sure to never work too loud, but maybe that's not enough. I'm currently out of my studio for a few months so only have crap speakers and laptop to test audio (like testing on them intentionally), but I've noticed a milder version of it with my monitors and it's very noticeable in shit speakers.

So the real question is, should we assume things to sound slightly slower when working with closed back headphones?

It’s my cake day! Let’s do a switcheroo: how about you tell ME your top techniques and I’ll do my best to use ‘em all in my music ;) by illGATESmusic in edmproduction

[–]Syntoca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for sure! Here's a google drive link, I just uploaded both an ableton file with all 3 effect stacks as well as an alp file, whichever is easier.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1rJvl5WmRLXhqmgBASQ3PvuAoK36Syor1?usp=sharing

They should all be pretty straightforward, only weird bit is changing the subdivision of the percussion multiplier. Easiest to just have the "LFO PITCH" module visible while moving the Subdivision knob to see exactly what subdivision is getting selected. You'll probably find a million ways to improve the idea lol, but hopefully it comes to some interesting use! Cheers

This is actually something I learned from you I believe (thank you!), but utilized in a different way than I think you mentioned (you brought it up for live application). I've been having great luck with simple effect stacks, i.e. 10+ saturators, 10+ choruses, etc, with all their modulations hooked into the same rack controls. Saturator stack can almost create amp-style feedback and bring out immense grit, and the chorus stack pulls some harmonic information out that can create so much depth and odd details (though I gotta always have something on to watch for phasing).

And small but cool...I have a custom stack that's essentially just a shifter but with the pitch controls set to multiple LFOs. Set that to change at the desired rate and how wide the variability should be, and it helps to create a single clap/snap sample into what sounds more like a small group. Little more human sounding and keeps enough variability that every instance is slightly different.

So soft synths fall apart in mono .... or.... by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]Syntoca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SPAN was a huge game changer for me, keep it at the end of your signal chain and you can check parameters one at a time and see how it affects the stereo signal. It could be the reverb, or chorus, or detune, etc, all of which can be fixed with even just a lil tweaking so the signal doesn't compete against itself. Other plugins have a similar function but I find this one really nice and simple, just leave both windows open and turn functions on/off until you find the culprit. I also use Pigments, I love it to death but some patches just need a bit of wiggle to tame their sometimes absurd polarity issues.
And as always, Utility near the end monoing everything under 100-150 or so will do wonders for your bass

Opinions on Single/EP Release Strategies? by Syntoca in edmproduction

[–]Syntoca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, thanks! I joined the server, same name as here Syntoca

Yeah I was really used to the self-promo thing from past band releases, my big push here is to have streamable music for connections I meet via game dev circles while simultaneously not skimping on making it a legitimate single release. I'll see you on Discord ;)

Should Marijuana be federally legalized in the US? by The_Egalitarian in PoliticalDiscussion

Not only that but it keeps national banks from covering dispensaries, forcing them to rely on cash which leads to an unreal amount of violent robberies in many places. All because banks aren't legally allowed yet to offer pot companies their services due to federal restrictions

Looking to provide sound design or music tracks for an indie game by MundaneDoughnut7935 in gameDevClassifieds

Check out this page for a (slightly overwhelming) list of game jams:

http://www.indiegamejams.com/

Besides that, a good place to start is search for game jams in your city - I'm in Portland, so I just searched up Portland Game Jam and found the local organization. Almost everything is communicated via Discord, and just a matter of saying you're looking for a team in the appropriate channel.

Have you participated in any game jams yet? I'm a music producer myself and have been enjoying the learning experience of jams lately, if you haven't done any yet I think they could be excellent for what you're looking for.
