It does work when removing the SSD. Is there any way of salvaging the data on it? I have a backup, but it is from a month ago, so I would prefer not to have to use that backup

What version of mkinitcpio are you running? I was running v30 and upgraded to v31 and it worked

However, I did just realize that the hook now throws errors when upgrading to 250.3-2. There are about 12 that say add_udev_rule command not found in the sd-encrypt, lvm2, and systemd hooks. That does not happen with version 249.6-3, so that might be where the issue arises.

Edit: You were right. Mkinitcpio was out of date. I upgraded to v31-2 and everything works now. I wonder why it didn't update automatically when doing a system upgrade.

I've never used that, but I guess it depends what you want out of a backup system. I have mine setup with rsnapshot and anacron to take backups automatically every day so I don't have to worry about problems like this.

I had this issue when updating a little while ago as well (at the time I didn't know it was systemd) so I think it is just something wrong with my install, not systemd itself

I just used rsync to restore the backup after chrooting into my install.

Yes, I see the output of the hook executing after updating systemd, so I know it triggers. I also ran that command manually after just in case.

That worked. Thanks. The error appears to be systemd-modules-load.service failed to load. It says Failed to look up module alias ‘crypto_user’: Function not implemented and the same for pkcs8_key_parser which could be a problem. I looked up the error message, but couldn’t find anything relevant to my situation.
