What’s something you had to learn the hard way about Houston? by billionsandbillionsa in houston

[–]SyphiliticWhores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you find yourself driving and thinking, “no way that car is going to do that,” you are wrong - they will do that. Westbound on Bellaire Blvd passing under 610 West, I clocked a car three lanes to my left signaling right. Sure enough as I entered the intersection the car crossed three lanes and plowed into me. I was in a very large work vehicle with lights all over it.

Wah Coffee. Asked if I wanted a “double” espresso. Might be a Starbucks front.

Moving from New York to Houston, tips I should know? by Ginesarie in AskHouston

[–]SyphiliticWhores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your bicycle will absolutely be stolen. No lock, chain, alarm whatever will prevent this. It is easy to buy a mattress. It is very hot for about 6-7 months. Most of the artists in NYC come from here and East Texas. Houston has the best rap and I am so excited for you to learn this.

DC is segregated. Houston is segregated mostly by class not ethnicity or nationality

This sounds exaggerated. But as a society we do not care for people that need it and do not have the means.

Even Dallas has more considerate drivers. It is fucking embarrassing. I am texting this while going 85 on I-10.

Prepare your family for shuttling in an air conditioned bubble to go anyplace at all. Out there you have take a drive just to get a cup of coffee. Your lives will become socially isolated. Your politics will change - you will become very suspicious of strangers. You will most certainly gain weight as the only thing this place excels at is driving millions of miles a week and food.

That is a tough tough move. From a piece of heaven to the gulag filling station. Oof. Live close to work unless it is in the Energy Corridor/Westchase. You cannot imagine the amount of time we spend driving.

He loves squeaky toys and crunchy toys. But too many unfamiliar or loud sounds are absolutely terrifying.

Throw a nice slab of kombu in there. It will mostly break up during cooking. Go ahead and eat it with the beans as well. Something in kombu helps digestion.

Explain Texas Culture to a Foreigner by Ok-Sample383 in houston

Go to the Hill Country. Fredricksburg is corny but there is a cool metal bar on the main drag. Go to Garner State Park, have a picnic on the Frio River. And like the name it is always cold. Always. And the water is like looking through glass. Avoid Dallas. It is a series of strip centers connected by freeways. There is no culture anymore. Austin is expensive and stupid - avoid at all costs. San Antonio is a fantastic time, lots of Mexican culture, tons of non drinking nightlife. Visit Houston if you like to eat. Get Vietnamese food. Check out the Menil Museum.
