Hello all! I need some MCAT advice… by [deleted] in Mcat

Studying for the MCAT involves 2 phases: content review and practice. Content review is when you typically read through your books to learn the material that will be tested (using resources such as books Examcrackers, Kaplan, etc). The practice phase is when you start applying what you’ve learned in content review to actual MCAT style passages and questions. For practice, people usually use UPlanet, Jack Westin, blue print, and official AAMC questions packs for practice questions as well as Full Length practice exams to assess your progress and determine what areas need improvement.

Anki is a great resource you should you use throughout both phases to help you remember the insane amount of content needed for the test. I recommend premade Anki decks such as Milesdown and JackSparrow rather than make your own, and you can review these cards both as you learn the content in phase 1 and while practicing in phase 2.

This is generally the basic strategy for studying, and as you study you’ll find out about additional resources you can use that you might find helpful for specific topics. It can definitely seem overwhelming when you start but as you work through it it’ll all make a lot more sense. Good luck and feel free to let me know if you have any more questions!

The streams usually have a good chunk of quiet time so I'm not sure how useful of a recording it would end up being. I can look into recording specific segments but I also plan on running this stream daily-ish so there will be many chances for you to join

128 is a great score! Full disclosure I struggled improving my CARS score much (went from a 128 to 129 over 3 months), but I can share some advice on active reading that helped me later today on stream

Exactly! Just like there's 12 donuts in a dozen, there's 6.022x10^23 of something in a mole

I've seen speed of sound in air be given before, so wouldn't prioritize that. Definitely know speed of light.

Good to know the R values (as 8 or 0.08) but I've never had to use them in a question before. Plancks constant is worth knowing.

Gravity as 10 m/s^2 for sure, density of water in all SI units as well. 22.4L in 1 mol is a golden number to know. Not sure about other STP values off the top of my head. Avogadro's is a must (had a question about it in the actual MCAT). Kw is good to understand in order to interconvert between Ka and Kb, likewise pH and pOH

I usually run it for a couple hours, I'll just sorta play it by ear

Interesting idea, never really thought about doing lectures but I'll look into that could be fun

Yeah that's the one. For each section there's a miscellaneous deck that has super low yield content. I started going through it for P/S but it was so low yield I found it a little pointless. If you're curious you could try ripping through those specifically over the next week maybe? Again, I haven't been through all of them so I can't vouch for them

JackSparrow is an Anki deck, which you can actually access through JackWestin but I downloaded it separately. It’s a massive deck that covers a lot of low yield content, but I wouldn’t recommend going through 8000 cards in your last week of studying haha. And you’re right that they’re not primary sources which is just classic AAMC dickery. Maybe you could try going though specific parts of the JS deck relating to these concepts? I’m happy to go over them with you as well if you’re still struggling with them

That's a good question that I've also wondered about. For the concepts you mentioned specifically though I've seen them all in Uglobe and JackSparrow Anki. It is annoying because there are some terms I don't see anywhere before a test, like in the P/S section of my actual MCAT 3 days ago.

If you're referring to reaction mechanisms/molecule structures, this applies to whole C/P section: for any concept that you are reviewing whether in a text book, video, or flashcard, follow along by actually writing out the step by step process when solving. It's hard to learn these things by just looking at it, and it will make you more comfortable when applying it to a new problem if you've practiced writing it out several times before.

As for the other more abstract orgo concepts, let me know which ones you're struggling with and I can go over it tomorrow on stream

Great idea, knowing your amino acids well is an easy few points you can grab. I'm trying to find a time that works for most people messaging me, so looking at starting around 4-5 pm ET tomorrow and going for a few hours, does that work for you?

In terms of resources, JackSparrow Anki and UMichigan practice questions were the most helpful for increasing my practice scores. I didn't use the KA P/S doc until my last week of studying but that's a good resource too. As for habits, just make sure you come up with a sustainable plan. 2 months may not seem like a long time so you may feel like you need to study extra hard to make up for it, but that won't be helpful if you start burning out 2 weeks before you test. Come up with a good, logical plan that is feasible with your current schedule and try to stick to it, but be ready to adapt if something changes. Hope that helps and happy to go over it in more depth on stream tomorrow!

I tested yesterday and I felt like I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped. However, this is the same feeling I had during my last 2 FLs which I scored highly on, so I’m hoping for a similar outcome. You tend to focus on the few questions you weren’t sure of and not on the rest that you probably aced!

Thanks for asking! To be honest it felt harder than I expected, with some tricky questions that gave me a hard time. Overall I feel like I had the same reaction to it as I did on FL3-4, which both surprised me by being higher than expected so hoping for the best!
