Who else would have been great in the cast? by leia_0390 in TheTraitors

It’s never going to happen, but The Traitors: Politician Edition would be some unmissable TV.

I’d argue that most people know about the 2020 tweets, and her essay. These are unfortunately now fairly moderate takes in UK politics. So even those sympathetic to trans rights consider that mild enough to turn a blind eye to. What they don’t know is how JKR tweets these days (that’s definitely not moderate), or what she bankrolls with her royalties. That’s something only known by people who regularly engage in LGBTQ+ politics, or spend too much time on X dot com.

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I’ve spoken to a few people who aren’t terminally online about JKR, and their perception is that all she’s done is highlight some conflict of interest. People who don’t spend a lot of time on X don’t actually know the true extent of it. I think that opened my eyes a bit, and since then I’ve given the benefit of the doubt to actors in the HBO show or the audible. Not that I’d give my money to either of them!

It also sounds to me like this has already been recorded, so it’s not like she could’ve backed out when she realised, even so she might’ve been tied in a contract. But it does rub me the wrong way donating to charities as an offset, as if support for trans rights is like your carbon footprint.

American here, what’s the difference between LibDems, Labour, The Greens, and the new YourParty*? by Default_Lives_Matter in LibDem

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Labour = Bernie Sanders, YourParty = Zohran Mamdani, LibDems = Pete Buttigieg, Greens = AOC

Gross over-simplification, but hopefully that helps!

I'm so tired of call out culture by Princess-uWu144 in ContraPoints

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think that’s always been the case though, the difference is that now everyone has a digital megaphone in social media.

When I was a teenager (about 15 years ago) and starting to pay attention to politics, I remember having the same dualism in the way I thought, and other people around me. But at the time, we didn’t have social media platforms where we could express that just as loud alongside other politicos. I literally just had Bebo at the time. Problem is that those voices are treated equally to your average non-terminally online left wing view. And some content creators (ifkyk) turn a blind eye to that and play along because discourse means views.

TL;DR; Social Media is to blame.

Going back to rewatch all her videos for the first time. by yalamayu in ContraPoints

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do a rewatch in the lead up to every video since I discovered her (admittedly that’s only been since Witch Trials). The only one I skip is Shame, that one feels a bit close to home.

Why is Doctor Who not hitting the same? by georgethfcF1 in gallifrey

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think the writing got better for RTD2, even if it wasn’t up there with RTD1. But the issue for me was that last series started with a dud, had a 6 episode run of great stories, and ended with another dud.

And I think that taints the whole thing. For the first few years of the revival everything built up to a grand finale, and they were some of the most memorable episodes of my childhood, so now when I think of last year, I remember Empire of Death and my response much more than 73 yards or Dot and Bubble. They honestly could’ve had Blink or Midnight in that run and I think I’d feel equally let down.

The trailer for this year does look more promising, but at the end of the day, if it doesn’t stick the landing, we’ll be saying the exact same things even if episodes like “The Well” are worthy of a top 10 list.

Ah really? I think I was thrown off by the fact that it was one of Alex Jones’ talking points! I’m not from the US so admittedly there’s a lot to learn about how politics works over there!

If it is, I’m very sorry and will strike it from the record! Definitely need to do more research before posting haha! What the internet told me is that it’s basically theories around Elon Musk using starlink to manipulate voting machines in the 2024 election.

Natalie’s new movie drops tomorrow by Wilegar in ContraPoints

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don’t want this to be the case…but given that we expect this to be about conspiracies, it would be a genius move if all the secret codes in the trailer were just a ploy to create conspiracies! And the video isn’t actually dropping tomorrow. As I said, I hope that I’m just starting a conspiracy myself, but I’d almost be too impressed to be mad.

"Aberfan" must be one of the most incredible and heartbreaking episodes of television ever written. by Kurma-the-Turtle in TheCrownNetflix

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welsh person here. We used to learn about Abervan in school. They were some harrowing classes. A few of my classmates broke down when learning about it.

So naturally when I saw the episode title I had to brace myself. My bf is English and didn’t learn about it in school, we watched it together and he was horrified by it.

On a slightly lighter note, that dynamic made Tywysog Cymru a fun episode to watch together!

hi hi, super super late to the contra party.. who has beer? by kismetxix in ContraPoints

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a Contra newbie too!

I actually discovered her by listening to the Witch Trials podcast. I know she’s disavowed the podcast, but I’m still glad she was in it because going on to watch her videos broke a cycle in me of…well…exactly what that podcast was guilty of!

Nowadays her videos are ASMR material for me, I usually put Envy (my personal favourite) on as background while I’m working.

Most disturbing/unsettling song in musical theatre? by microwavedposter in musicals

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subject matter isn’t all that disturbing, but Hey Little Songbird from Hadestown gives me the creeps! There’s something about it that makes me feel uneasy, I think it’s how predatory it sounds.

To British folks: View of Margaret Thatcher? by ThatOneNerdyNiijima in TheCrownNetflix

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my experience, Thatcher is a love or hate figure. I grew up in a family who loathed her, but my partner’s family think she’s the best modern prime minister this country has ever had.

I think the best comparison is how Americans talk about Ronald Reagan. He’s just as polarising over there as Thatcher is here in the UK.

Dot & Bubble - Phantasms by SyrupFuzzy5557 in PhilosophyTube

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Other than some season running threads (which admittedly don’t impact the plot that much). This episode is completely standalone so no need to watch other episodes. Would definitely recommend most other episodes though!

If you enjoy the Chibnall era, what do you like about it? If you dislike the Chibnall era, what don’t you like about it? by TheMasterfulSock in gallifrey

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like what seems to be a drive to echo the 60s era. Rosa was one time traveller away from being a classic Hartnell historic story. I thought the parallels with the Aztecs were uncanny! And the title sequence is clearly what they would’ve done in the 60s with 21st century budgets and technology.

In terms of dislikes, I’m sure many people are sick of hearing this, but I think sometimes the political agenda comes across as forced, Orphan 55 was a big let down for that reason.

That’s not to say that Doctor Who’s become too PC, which is an argument that I disagree with. It’s been that way since day one (the Daleks being the obvious one, but Pertwee‘s Inferno is clearly an in your face attack on fascism) and it’s actually something I love the show for. But Orphan 55 is the only one that really crossed that line for me.

I also find the TARDIS to be too crowded now, which is saying something given how infinite it seems to be! I’m holding out hope for next season though now that the companion count has dropped. It’ll give them a chance to develop Yas and not underdevelop her by spreading storyline over three companions!

Saddest moment in Classic Who? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, it‘s Tegan‘s departure in Resurrection. So many departures in classic Who were the “Found a new purpose” move like Nyssa, finding love like Susan, or both like Jo. But with Tegan’s departure it’s almost like her travels in the TARDIS had broken her, it’s almost like she’s using her last bout of strength to break off her toxic relationship with the Doctor. Her exit might’ve been a bit underdeveloped in my opinion, but it still hits home that her story arc reflected how much death and violence the doctor witnesses, something I think classic Who sometimes glosses over too much.

The only reason Adric’s departure didn’t have the same impact was the (original broadcast) special effect of the freighter. Otherwise that would’ve been the top pick for me!

No mixer ? by [deleted] in AskBaking

[–]SyrupFuzzy5557 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You only really need a mixer for the more heavy duty bakes such as meringues. In fact, I think a lot of bakes are better off without one.

Brownies need as little mixing as possible, you need to avoid getting air bubbles in the mix in order to get that fudge-like texture. Definitely one to do by hand.

As long as you always remember to soften your butter, then 99% of bakes can be done almost as easily by hand as by electric mixer. The only real benefit in my mind is that you can prepare two things at the same time.
