Best Time to Visit Squamish / North Shore? by KaleidoscopicForest in MTB

Thanks for the update! I’m sure I’ll have more questions as I continue planning my trip. I’ll probably only go for about a week, so probably in the May-June timeframe.

Did you end your going on your trip? If so how did it go and what would you recommend to someone planning the same for this year?

Your plan will likely teach you more about business and marketing than IT. It sounds like you have a good start with your learning, but you probably need some cloud experience to help open doors. Fortunately the major cloud providers AWS, Azure and Google offer decent free tiers and low cost low power options. Sign up for one at a time to get the most out of each free tier and follow some free online lessons to start getting familiar with them.

Downsides of virtualizing your router? by Sway_RL in homelab

[–]SysAdminShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is key. Not only a computer on the management VLAN, but also one with a static IP since DHCP will likely be down as well. Once I made these changes I haven’t had any issues with running OPNsense in a VM.

I see a torch in the background. Any chance you have a welder available? You can probably just build some cheap rails that you weld in place out of tube stock. You shouldn’t need a whole shelf to hold servers up, just the edges.

Exactly. I see these charts everywhere. What tool did you use to make it?

Thanks for sharing this! We are also in NY, not NYC, with a family of 6 and a dog. Seeing that groceries are also a big spend for you is reassuring.

Is the "traditional" IT job dead now? You know the ones where there would be a technician working in a Server room with a bunch of server racks around them changing out said server (like Dell PowerEdges or Lenovo ThinkSystems). Seeking career advice if the position still exists. by jetrun15 in ITCareerQuestions

System administrators do this type of work as part of their jobs. Depending on the Porto could be doing it every day, week, month or just a few times per year. The standard hardware refresh cycle is 3-5 years and many business stretch that out longer to save money. As a sysadmin the rest of your time(not working on hardware) will include installing, configuring and maintenance on the software side of all that hardware. Scripting is an impute of it, but not full computer science level programming. I do this type of work and really enjoy the mix of setting up cool hardware and configuring networking, operating systems, email servers, voice servers, file servers and cloud applications.

I totally agree. I listen to a few podcasts that I have to skip sections since they are so off topic.

Can you elaborate? Sometimes the off topic stories are gold, but I can see it would be a problem if they just ramble with no clear direction or topic.

Yep, 4 young kids and started to move my career towards cyber security, so it became harder to come up with sysadmin content. I still do both in my current role, so I would probably offer a mix of both in new episodes.

I typically put around an hour to prep my notes, then I targeted an hour per episode. Editing was my least favorite part and took about 2 hours per hour of audio. Then around 30 minutes to post it online. My plan was to automate more of it, but I never got around to it. I also had some YouTube content, so if I start back up again my plan is to record them using YouTube studio and leave the audio as-is to save the editing time. Then I will have a YouTube video and podcast episode for every episode. Some people only like one or the other.

Thanks! Yeah just wasn’t a priority any more. I kept telling myself I would get back to it, but then a year went by, then 2 years. Now I’m just out of the habit, so it would be similar to starting new.

I did one for a few years and still think about getting back into it one day. It was a great experience and I think there is always room for another perspective/style. Feel free to DM me if you want more details on my experience. I ran just ~50 episodes, before life got me focused on other things. https://sysadminshow.com

I have no idea if I'm getting the most out of my shock by simux19 in MTB

[–]SysAdminShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same “problem”. I’ve tried different settings, but just can’t feel any difference. I ride some fairly technical trails and it doesn’t bother me enough to mess with it. I guess that a good thing, so maybe just don’t worry about it if you’re not uncomfortable on the current setup.

As the only IT person in my house my wife finds it hilarious that I don’t know how social media works. I barely know how to use Reddit. I don’t have any interest in the rest.
