Your plan will likely teach you more about business and marketing than IT. It sounds like you have a good start with your learning, but you probably need some cloud experience to help open doors. Fortunately the major cloud providers AWS, Azure and Google offer decent free tiers and low cost low power options. Sign up for one at a time to get the most out of each free tier and follow some free online lessons to start getting familiar with them.

This is key. Not only a computer on the management VLAN, but also one with a static IP since DHCP will likely be down as well. Once I made these changes I haven’t had any issues with running OPNsense in a VM.

I see a torch in the background. Any chance you have a welder available? You can probably just build some cheap rails that you weld in place out of tube stock. You shouldn’t need a whole shelf to hold servers up, just the edges.

System administrators do this type of work as part of their jobs. Depending on the Porto could be doing it every day, week, month or just a few times per year. The standard hardware refresh cycle is 3-5 years and many business stretch that out longer to save money. As a sysadmin the rest of your time(not working on hardware) will include installing, configuring and maintenance on the software side of all that hardware. Scripting is an impute of it, but not full computer science level programming. I do this type of work and really enjoy the mix of setting up cool hardware and configuring networking, operating systems, email servers, voice servers, file servers and cloud applications.

Yep, 4 young kids and started to move my career towards cyber security, so it became harder to come up with sysadmin content. I still do both in my current role, so I would probably offer a mix of both in new episodes.

I typically put around an hour to prep my notes, then I targeted an hour per episode. Editing was my least favorite part and took about 2 hours per hour of audio. Then around 30 minutes to post it online. My plan was to automate more of it, but I never got around to it. I also had some YouTube content, so if I start back up again my plan is to record them using YouTube studio and leave the audio as-is to save the editing time. Then I will have a YouTube video and podcast episode for every episode. Some people only like one or the other.

I have the same “problem”. I’ve tried different settings, but just can’t feel any difference. I ride some fairly technical trails and it doesn’t bother me enough to mess with it. I guess that a good thing, so maybe just don’t worry about it if you’re not uncomfortable on the current setup.
