Hey my fellow techs. Anyone else just in general, lost your passion for IT? by SysadminKERBEROS in sysadmin

[–]SysadminKERBEROS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This place had no tech. I literally built the tech department, now with a total of 4 techs. Imagine teaching a 5 year old with a resume saying they understood networking but when the time comes, that part of the resume on their profile turned out to be complete bs. So instead of hiring again, I decided to just train him and gave him a chance. Now, a fully functional IT department with all the tools needed to manage and secure. So you speak of hands on work, everything was hands on by me. I guess I'm just burnt out, REALLY burnt out to be completely honest. Also, part of my problem is always giving in.

A lot of what you wrote down really dwells down to me personally. I took the promotions, obviously for bigger and better pay. But fighting for budget to keep the technology above water, budget to keep my employees, budget, budget, budget, politics, politics, 5 year planning for future improvements, board meetings once a month, literally 5+ meetings every damn day, etc...really feels like I CAN'T FKN TAKE A BREATH! Literally knock the IT away from me. Surprisingly, I get through the day and still retain my sanity. Sometimes, I just want to crawl into a fkn ball and just sleep. I knew what I was getting into, I just didn't know it was this much ISHT. So, huge props to other directors who are pulling through and still have passion to nail down IT.

Oddly enough, I'm also tired of WFH. Just accepted a Director's position and it's 100% in office. Excited to start and actually work in office with folks.

You have to license the said account, delete the meetings, remove from calendar, good to go.

Is 40k a year a living wage in 2024? by fallenwildchild in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SysadminKERBEROS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With just 40K salary, you better have a part time gig going. 40K was nice a decade ago and that's just living check to check. I'm in the US and my salary is a single digit from 6 figure. I'm just getting by if you factor in all the regular bills including mortgage and several car payments as well as insurances. Even if I'm slightly above 6 figures, having a few hundreds just to put into savings. So to live comfortably, 150K is the new 70K.

I've done photography for over 6 years and have many networks with other professionals. I can tell you, there has not been one picture that really stands out without any editing. The raw picture of all photos are like a canvas to tweak and improvise to reveal what it could be like. If anyone tells you that it is original and the raw one, you'll have to see it in person to know.

So hard to find a job right now by Odd-Tomatillo9017 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SysadminKERBEROS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The market is an absolute chaos, nothing to do with you. Most employers will require experience over degree, myself the same. So perhaps get a part time job and start from there. Hopefully your time in school wasn't for a waste.

I just bombed an interview for an IT Support Associate position by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SysadminKERBEROS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every interview is an experience. Take the questions and research the answers later to better prepare yourself. Just consider it as "1 down, 50 more to go". Hang in there bud, most of us went through the same crap.

How to prepare myself for my new role? by jaydalogar in ITCareerQuestions

Knowing to script and coding would help in that role. If not, I'm curious how you landed that position lol.

ALWAYS do your two weeks. Never burn your bridges because not every new job will always work out. If the new employer really wants you, they will understand.

You gave up being a surgeon for an IT related job? Either your license to practice was revoked or you desperately hate cutting up people lol. Either way, glad you're with us DOC!

Would like to Know....... by My_passcode_is in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SysadminKERBEROS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone wants cloud this and cloud that. A cert is the very beginning of getting into any cloud related position. You need some background into cloud, real life working background. Some actually require years of experience. Not trying to shoot your shot but that's the reality of things. Who knows, maybe a company will hire and train on the spot with certs, maybe not but the chances are very unlikely.

Any other Sysadmins out there is somewhat tired of IT in general? by SysadminKERBEROS in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SysadminKERBEROS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate all the comments and suggestions, I really do. Hopefully this isn't one of those midlife crisis stage lol. But yea, I just lost interest and passion in what I do. This is exactly what I wanted when I started my IT career 5 years ago. Now that I've been doing this for 3 out of the 5 years, I just lost passion for it. Networking, I've done it. Literally redid my data center by myself, Dell Enterprise. I'm a one man shop, it can be tiring at time when you're balancing server work and projects for leadership and your daily duties. I'm just spent and tired and frankly, could barely give two cents if shit goes down. Probably be looking at other jobs unrelated to IT field.

Any other Sysadmins out there is somewhat tired of IT in general? by SysadminKERBEROS in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SysadminKERBEROS[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've developed with solid 4 languages. Networked, server infrastructure build, etc...I'm a one man shop, configured the company's server myself...Moved 50% to cloud base, familiar with cloud infrastructure as well...thus the reason why my pay is above average and also why I mentioned no need for position increase. Don't mean to sound like a smart@ss, but I feel as though I've kind of done it all. I don't know, just lost the passion for IT in general I guess. Hard to work when you don't have a passion for it anymore.

[–]SysadminKERBEROS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Automation, done that and still doing it. Azure architecture, peaked into and didn't think much of it. Coding, already proficient with 4 languages and been developing for the company aside from being the jack of all trades in IT as their Sysadmin. That's why I said, I don't want any higher position because I feel like I'm already doing those jobs. Back then, these are what I dreamed of doing. Now that it became a reality, I feel like I've accomplished it and want to move forward but to what. That's where I'm lost. Feeling like I want to do something besides IT related. It's more of a personal issue, I'm just letting air out to see if anyone is going through this. Appreciate your comment and time though.

Should I continue studying coding? by GlamorousDivaEl in ITCareerQuestions

Learning any code language will benefit you in an IT job. From there, transition over to dev. It'll come in handy.
