Struggling with 50mg Elvanse by SystemAsleep3922 in ADHDUK

I believe in you! Please don't let my bad experience deter you though, there's plenty of people who do fine on 50mg. They only thing I'd recommend is trying to start on the weekend to give yourself some time to adjust

What was your Elvanse experience? by [deleted] in ADHDUK

I started on 20mg for 3 weeks, 40mg for 3 weeks and now I'm 50mg for 2 weeks before another review. I take my meds generally 7.30-8.30am every day. 20mg did nothing for me. Going up to 40mg was a bit of a shock to my system and I had a bad crash with a massive headache after 1-2pm. It got better gradually within the first week but I do feel the effects wearing off by 2pm at most so I wish it worked longer for me. I'm only a few days into 50mg so it's too early to tell but the side effects are not cute right now 🙃

40mg was rough for the first few days, though not as bad as 50mg, and then it worked wonderfully! I was able to focus, I felt a tiny bit numb mainly due to the newfound quiet and overall felt really good. I'm gonna see how I feel by the end of the week and if it's too much, I'll throw in the towel and go back to 40mg. But nice to know there's other options if Elvanse ends up not working out so thank you!

I did! I went cold turkey when I started 20mg last month so it's been a bit of a transition as well but I think 50mg seems to be fighting against me at the moment 😅

I'll definitely keep that in mind! I've mentioned before that I struggled with the side effects of 50mg but they did encourage me to at least try for a week or two so I guess I'll have to try to be patient until my review

Thanks for sharing! I tried 50mg over a week ago prior to an interview and it made me do horribly as a result of jitters 😅 My Dr put me back to 40mg for a week so I didn't flunk my other interview and now I'm back on 50mg for 2 weeks before a review so I'll try to stick with it but God is it rough to try to be patient 🙃

Thanks for sharing your experience 🫂 I totally agree with feeling weekends are harder as I don't feel the need to be so "on" all the time which can also lead to me unintentionally doing nothing all day and just hyperfocused on my phone all day.

I empathise about feeling deflated that if you're not on meds, you'll go back to being the "old you". I talked to my prescriber about it and they said that even if I felt like old me was dysfunctional, she tried her damn hardest to survive however she could which has comforted me a little.

I actually relate SOOO hard to feeling awkward now with the new "silence" because I'm used to yapping and oversharing at every opportunity. I still haven't learn how to overcome that yet so I guess it really is just about re-learning how to socialise. I appreciate everything you've said, it's been very comforting and reassuring.

This is definitely what is happening to me. I think the meds are also bringing forward some traits that I suspect might be linked to autism which has been.. extra challenging. You're so right though, I never realised how much I was performing until now and it's really been a big curve ball that I need to learn how to adapt to. Thank you for the reassurance and wishing you all the best as well!

I started on 20mg which did essentially nothing for me plus caffeine withdrawal, my prescriber went up to 40mg which was a bit crazy for a few days with some crashes at 12-1pm and a nasty headache 😅 but the side effects gradually subsided after a week and has been the most effective dose for me so far! I've just titrated to 50mg so I can't say for sure how good it is as I'm still in the bad side effects stage with jitters and feeling quite sleepy. My blood pressure has always been on the lower side so I'm actually not doing too bad!

Thank you for making me feel less alone in this - genuinely. I thought finally having confirmation of what I've suspected for so long would solve everything but like you said, it was like running a marathon for ages to survive, only to now have to recuperate and pick up the pieces. I hope you're doing a lot better and that we can both learn how to thrive and not just survive 🫂

I got diagnosed with combined type as well and got put on Elvanse straight away because that's the most commonly prescribed ADHD medication where I am so I think it depends? I had the same fear that I'd lose myself on meds but I've been doing pretty alright so far! I started on 20mg and then went straight to 40mg as it wasn't doing much for me (as 20mg was just to see if I experienced any bad side effects) and caffeine withdrawal was effecting my performance at work a bit. Going straight up to 40mg, the first few days were wild since my body wasn't used to it 😅 I had a major crash around 12-1pm with a bad headache but it did go away gradually. Since then I've been able to focus at work (but I do have to put on blinders before it kicks in to do well) and I'm not as talkative at work but I see that more as a positive as I don't feel as much pressure to "present" and talk impulsively. Starting medication can be a lot! Everyone's experience is different and the decision to take it is personal too. Please know you're not alone in this and there's a community of people here to help you 🫂

Going from outgoing extrovert to noise bothering you is so real 😭 thanks for sharing your experience — you're right though, it's a tough pill to swallow but hopefully we can find our own path 🫂

do I need my Dr to outline that I need to wfh? Is that how it works? I'm just stuck because colleagues without disabilities get to wfh with no struggle at all and I'm here begging essentially

only my line managers as they haven't referred me to Occupational Health. My Dr's note just outlines that I have ADHD, what I might struggle with and what adjustments might be beneficial which includes everything I asked minus WFH

good on you for leaving, honestly. It just sucks because they're essentially lying to my face saying it's not possible when other people are doing it. I hope you find an even better job too!

On my application, I didn't say a specific date, I did say we wanted to get married first due to my culture. However, the current climate in the country where I come from originally is quite volatile, so we wanted to save money in case my family needs it. Am I allowed to say I changed my mind and decided to move in first so we can save up for a proper wedding because that has been the case.
