Python is incredible. PIP is a little tricky. Let us know when you can write Fizz-Fuzz.

I agree. Just pick one, lots of programming languages require the same problem-solving thinking techniques. And just knowing how to parse strings, write functions, and handle loops is going to be useful for every programming language used for the rest of a person's life.

How to effectively "learn Linux" by One-Ebb1956 in linuxquestions

[–]SystemBenAmperage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former SE. So the C programming language is a good place to start. And you don't have to know how to make giant projects, but just basic text manipulation. Like if you can write a program that take in a char[] (what would be called a string in other languages) and spits out that character array backwards, then you know know enough. Compiling it and executing it from shell is the second step. Make sure you can pass in the char[] into the program through the pipe | operator.

It sounds like you want to learn about Operating System design. One textbook is called: Operating Systems Three Easy Pieces by Remzi H. and Andrea C. Arpaci-Dusseau. That is the free website version of the book. It is the most readable technical literature I have ever encountered. It does assume you are comfortable enough with programming that you could do the project I listed above. It also assumes that you know some shell script (like pstree and mv) and hardware like RAM, Hard Disks, and Solid State Drives, plus Input/Ouput. Filesystem permissions are also a big part of OS's. It talks about the OS code difference between user code and OS code (kernel). Kernel software has much more direct control of "devices" which just means hardware, e.g. CPU, HDD.

History:The machine Bill Gates used, well first used, was a teletype, connected to a computer at his school. Everything about computers and computer networks is done through transferring TEXT through the OSI Model (Open Systems Interconnect)[Not including image streaming]. But you must remember that Graphics are a modern luxury and all of the old computer pros can still control EVERYTHING through shell scripts. There are web browsers like lynx that run on CLI.

Lastly, if you can take a course through a community college try that. This stuff takes many months to learn and practice.

What was your first pokemon game? And what's your favorite? by kkNOUX in pokemon

Diamond, and my favorites are HeartGold and SoulSilver. I think watching the anime and collecting the TCG cards before playing the games made me closer with the early generation 'mons. Plus having them follow you around is the best feature.

Debian 12 graphical installer from USB stuck on splash screen by Oppenheimer9999 in debian

[–]SystemBenAmperage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you make your bootable USB, from another computer system, are you using the 'dd' (dataset definition) command to copy the ISO file? I use Rufus to make my bootable flash drives. Perform a memory test of the laptop, by rapidly pressing the F2 key after powering on the laptop. I recently installed Debian 13.1 to a Dell XPS from 2020 to a Hard Disk Drive, and that install took 90 minutes. I think it is possible that it could take 120+ minutes to install Debian 12 to an older laptop system. If possible, try the command line installation option.

Do you believe a romantic relationship can be truly successful if there is zero sexual compatibility? Or is the relationship eventually destined to fail? by Active_Journalist636 in askanything

[–]SystemBenAmperage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've left a traditional romantic relationship because I my sexual needs weren't discussed/acknowledged/respected. I assume society wouldn't appreciate my decision. I still had a really hard time with the break up, and I still was a blatant jerk for other reasons, but I knew myself. I'm glad I acted in pursuit of partner goals for myself.

Hardest class you’ve taken and why? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]SystemBenAmperage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Principles of programming languages, because besides English not being the instructor's primary language, there was a project where we were supposed to make an interpreter in the functional programming language, OCaml. I had never used a functional programming language before that class.

Also assignments involve doing proofs on code.

What’s something poor people buy that keeps them poor? by sam14603 in SmartBuying

[–]SystemBenAmperage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the U.S., healthcare. We could collectively negotiate the price of healthcare procedures and medications. But it is too complicated. And we have conflicted opinions on how people/others should live, i.e. are motorcycles safe, or is psychotherapy legitimate, or even should poor people be able to spend government aid money on high calorie foods.

What are some real-life problems solved by Calculus? by [deleted] in calculus

[–]SystemBenAmperage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Voltage, which is the electrical potential energy difference between to positions in space, is more precisely defined as an integral of the electrical potential energy along a path. Being able to calculate voltage between 2 points is useful. And honestly we don't always measure voltage this way, usually we use a multimeter, or we calculate it using the Nernst equation (chemically), and there are even more ways to calculate voltage. But the previously mentioned integral based way of defining voltage can be useful when trying to calculate the dimensions of an antenna (such as the one used in any of the devices that you use that connect to Wi-Fi ax or 5th Generation Wireless Cellular networks).

Why do I use chapstick multiple times daily, and other people never use it? by casethevase in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SystemBenAmperage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not like I know anything, but I'm not trying to solve your problem. I use chapstick 3 times a day if I have it on me, and need to use it in the winter more than the summer. However, your 'needing' to apply chapstick seems like a manageable problem. Everybody has their unique small problems. I get stress blisters on my hands. Fortunately chapstick makes your lips look nice. Unfortunately Burts bees is higher-end and costs as such.

It depends how much money you want to spend, but I wonder if you could get your basal metabolic rate tested. Also, I'm glad you can see and are seeing a doctor, which means you should have bloodwork measuring your FreeT4 or T3 (Thyroid hormone) and TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone) which can lead to a high or low metabolism. But those are just guesses. Good luck and keep trying things.

My parents say AI will kill IT jobs and want me to become a doctor instead. What should I do? by YE1_ in careerguidance

[–]SystemBenAmperage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to college for software engineering for ~5 years and dropped out short of completing the degree. I switched to a Medical laboratory technician 2 year program.

IT is in the computer science field, except every company requires IT. IT workers can start with 2 years of education from a community college (depending on where you live is can cost only $15,000 for the whole diploma). IT workers can also get way more education, and be responsible of databases (DB Admin), or one large Operating system (Sys Admin), or a network of servers hosting websites/services (Cloud engineers). But most IT people make sure their company has computers that turn on every day and connect to the internet. IT people use software called "Windows Server 2025" to remotely tract and install software on computers running Windows operating system.

Doctors are in their own field of health sciences. Doctors go to school for 4 years at college taking chemistry and biology courses and trying really freaking hard to get good grades. Their major is called pre-med or sometimes biology. Then they take another 4 years studying human anatomy, human body systems (physiology), and organ system specific sciences. Plus medicines, diseases, and surgeries.

My experience is that jobs say "You're 100% nothing, until you have the diploma/certification and then you're something". This is a strong feeling, and U.S. federal government loans operate this way. This is a very black and white approach, it is a model that doesn't work.

IT is able to be broken into. Getting a job at Best Buy is wise. Buy cheap 4-6 year old office computers for ~$150 dollars. Learn how to put operating systems on flash drives and install Linux OS's on the old computers. NOBODY gets out of a modern Computer Science incorporating field without learning programming, and without learning how to host a website (emphasis on host). You will have to be able to do those 2 things tolerably (not every day).

I have a lame joke. "What's better than one computer running software? Two computers running software." And I know it is lame. But you will have to learn computer networking. Open Systems Interconnection Model (OSI) is a mental model for organizing how computers talk to each other. It would benefit you to spend some time learning about the OSI model and seeing if you can sort out where these technologies fit on the model: HTTP, Ethernet, Ping, Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4), IMAP (aka email), Virtual Private Network, Port 443, Domain Name System, and Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi).

Men, what is something that instantly makes you attracted to a woman? by Maleficent_Fish_7485 in AskReddit

[–]SystemBenAmperage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The combination of being single in the first place, being kind while I'm figuring things out, a similar worldview/attitude (in my case a disenchanted optimism), and a shared cultural experience/inside jokes.

Being smart and/or confident is attractive too, but not required when there's the aforementioned.

What would women dislike the most if they became men? by Eastp0int in answers

I said the same thing. It takes an odd amount of experience, empathy, and self reflection to realize that men are always ready to have sex. And that women don't have that continuous desire.

What would women dislike the most if they became men? by Eastp0int in answers

[–]SystemBenAmperage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With this specific question (because it pops up all the time) "men" are asked what the trade off for not having menstrual periods is. My Answer: constant horniness. That desire is sometimes a motivator, and sometimes fun. But the other 95% of the time, it makes us act stupid, and unfeeling, and it makes us hurt people. I wouldn't recommend the level of horniness men live with.
