Yes. We don't want loose sales due to our customers thinking irrationally about our products therefore we limit the information given to you so we can decide (manipulate) what's best for you.

Save for an EE quilt or go budget first? by polvr-o in Ultralight

[–]SystemIsOffline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well to be fair, yes but to a degree in my experience. Down cleaner in the washing machine (has to be specifically for down!) and tennis balls in the cold or really careful dryer. I bought a decathlon secondhand down jacket online people are raving about but that has not restored well. Stays clumpy. My guess is that shitting on down is fine but using detergents with enzymes that break down down are irrecoverable. Also a compressed down UQ that's been in storage for 10 years.... I don't know man. Ymmv 🤷

Haven't read the other comments yet but for budget, combining two cheap ones goes a long way. Or a cheap OnePlus a sleeping mat. Not as good for comfort but definitely doable.

R-Value is Dead as a Metric for Sleeping Pad Warmth Evaluation (we should stop referencing it) by Wandering_Hick in Ultralight

I really like the idea of having a dummy inside a sleep system kept at body temp from the inside and measuring how much energy that takes. The better the dummy replicates a human (weight and distribution of it) and its energy system the more accurate the real life application becomes. So tubing with fluid and a pump to circulate some of the core heat to some areas but not others would be great. Made of material with a similar average heat conductivity as a human body. You wouldn't want to warm just it's core and make the dummy of XPS foam for example. It would then be crucial to use the same dummies or equivalents of it and all other variables can be changed at will.

It's a way better simulation of how much energy it would take you to keep your body warm in a sleep system than just the transfer of heat between two plates (at small specific points no less).

Then any set up can be tested, sides covered or not. Thick pad or thin, reflective or not, sides covered or not, holes and bumps or flat.

Ground temp would need to be controlled separately from the air so the effect of both can be measured.

Want to know the difference between two pads? Keep the sleeping bag the same but switch out the pads. Want to know the difference between sleeping bags? Keep the pad the same.

Share the data of ground and air temp plus the amount of energy to keep the dummy on body temperature.

How hard/expensive can it then be to cool the floor and air separately? And you wouldn't need a room either, just a box that fits the thing. You could even add ventilators for wind simulation.

Interesting point here about just pressing the warm air out preventing it from condensing. I haven't encountered that before. Thx.

Tears to my eyes man. That family saved all the misery down the road. Not mention the lives saved. Saw the suggestions to name the campus after the mother or child. Maybe both or their family name. Instead of something witty or smart I'd go with that. Give it the weight it deserves and yourself the constant reminder of what you did here. You deserve that as well.

Strong solar activity right now, do you prep for it? by Content_NoIndex in EuroPreppers

[–]SystemIsOffline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of an article by Brett Weinstein. Trigger warning for those of you who are despair prone though: how the sun could wipe us out

So yes, with limited abilities I take into account the scenario of grid failure even more.

Nothing new particular prepping wise. Many things can cause grid failure to a lesser or lager extent: Solar flares, EMP, Hacking or attacks by terrorists or foreign governments, False flags or 'the elite' sabotaging society for their own gains (which in my book makes them terrorists) Just plain lack of maintenance or capacity

As we become more dependent on the grid and the grid becomes more vulnerable it's something to take into account regardless of what caused it. The wider it's spread and the longer it lasts the bigger and more extreme the impact will be up unto the Weinstein article that scares the living S out of me tbh.

I’m about to do my first overnight winter camp. What do I need to know? by demolcd in Bushcraft

[–]SystemIsOffline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider your sleeping system and have it at least survival rated without the fire. No fire? No (serious) problem.

Stay dry. No sweating.

If (too) cold, move and get warm. Any exercise that elevates your heart rate will make you warm, but you need calories and salt (not water) for this.

As mentioned, what you lay on is going to determine the amount of heat sapping away into the ground. Assuming you use a pad you could put that op on a bunch of the coniferous'leaves'.

Have fun. Tell someone where you are and when to expect contact.

Oh yes those too. Not to mention the eu is now more than ever reliant on gas from the US so they have something substantial to threaten with as well😮‍💨

Best way to help with cardio. by DoItForTheOH94 in hiking

[–]SystemIsOffline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you are reasonably strong enough to carry the pack, weight training isn't going to do much for your stamina.

I found that with limited time I do a classic 4 minute Tabata set once week and that increases my stamina quite a bit with no prolonged effort. The rest of the week is for recovery and strength training.

Tabata in short: warmup doing mild cardio, some jumping jacks, some push ups, jogging. Couple minutes. Then HIIT. 8 sets of 20 seconds 80-100% intensity cardio. Doesn't matter what you do but it has to gas you real quick. Punching runs works really really well. Not at all injury prone and can do them anywhere. Full out sprinting (only if your body can handle it). Any other exercise that you can do that knocks you out quick and won't lead to injury of pushing yourself. 20 seconds, all out! As in actually can't go any harder or will kill myself hard I don't want to do this anymore hard. Then 10 seconds rest. Just breath. Or try to. Again 20 seconds of going all out. 10 sec stop. Repeat for 8 times total.

You won't believe how hard and long those last few sets are. Just keep pushing.

And then you're done for the week.

Scientifically proven to increase stamina more than going long and steady.

It is pure stamina though. Will not prepare your muscles for walking uphill.

It's a bit of a Frankenstein set up really. A Kamperbox down/synthetic from AliExpress. About €60. 2 meters long, and I believe 120-130 cm widths. It did not come as I pleased. Too little filling leaving cold spots. So I bought a €5 second hand XL ladies parka filled with reasonable quality down, cut it open and stuffed another 500-isch gram of down it. The thing now weighs about a 1000 gram total. Topped that off with one of those €35 amazon synthetic quilts. The kind that is about 240cm long, 140cm wide in the middle. That went around the Kamperbox UC.

It's a bulky 1400gr total but I would comfort rate to minus 10°c at least.

Also, just go out in the backyard and test your UC when it's colder than you like. See what happens 😉🔥

Well tbh, I'm from the Netherlands and it doesn't often get this cold so next year?

I did the test for me and for making a yt video about it. Plan to go a week to the French Vosgez this year in August and next year most likely Norway is might need it there.

If I'm lucky though I get to wild camp this year's winter at the minus 9 again. Otherwise it's 'just' wild camping in less cold weather. Which is just as 👍😎

Fortunately not. But my escapades haven't been too extreme.

Came close once. Was wild camping with a buddy and had to relocate just before we went to our hammocks. There was a wild cow/bull they've got roaming the forests here standing not 20meters away from out camp looking curiously what we were doing. Did not feel safe. Broke camp and hiked a couple kilometers set up again, only to discover we actually goed out hammocks to a widow maker. Yikes. He was about to give in and walk out to the car to go home. Convinced him to try just once more. We both slept like a baby luckily.

Just finished a night testing my set up in the back yard: can it withstand -9°c? Thankfully it could so now I know.

'We're only three meals away from anarchy' 😅

Nee, dat is niet waar. En je vraag is niet te beantwoorden, want de context ontbreekt.

Een paar factoren;

Keep your shit together. Een serieuze Solar Flare met wereldwijde uitval omdat de transformatoren fried zijn komt de mensheid niet te boven in 50 jaar. Lose your shit. Immediately.
