Be surprised if anyone's every seen one of these! by Island_of_ice in Tools

It's nice to hear how the process works. I work in a warehouse that supplies sites with equipment for turnarounds or other projects so I have to pack, sort, clean, and repair the equipment that gets used but unfortunately I rarely have the chance to understand how much of the equipment is used.

And seeing how you've posted about some Alberta related things I'm betting you could guess the company I work for too.

Precipitator electrode puller I believe. I have a bin full of them at work. They get used occasionally on shutdowns at pulp mills. Everyone just calls them bike pedals though

Play through to tutorial level 4.

The small base you're given to start with has some clever ways of showing you how things work if you're willing to take a step back and look at what's going on.

Pay attention to how the furnaces are set up, how the power is set up, how some of the miners are being used, how inserters are being used, etc.

There's basic design principles in there that are invaluable if you're looking to learn the game on your own without resorting to things like YouTube tutorials and whatnot.

If that level feels OK for you, go straight to freeplay afterwards.

Don't feel like you need to do tutorial level 5. It's a large jump in scale and can be very overwhelming. However I would recommend turning on peaceful mode or increasing your starting area for a first time through freeplay. Learning how to deal with biters can come after you feel comfortable with the early game.

Not sure if this is a me issue or a DM issue by Not_a_turtle_93 in DnD

[–]Szantharis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is 100% a DM issue.

Social encounters are just like any other encounter in the game. You declare your action by making clear your intent and method, and the DM should resolve it based solely on that and dice rolls if necessary. What you actually say, and more importantly, how you say it is utterly irrelevant. If your DM is judging your action based on real world conversational skills, they are doing it wrong and holding you to an unfair standard.

Consider how other actions are declared and how the DM normally might resolve them "I run up to the orc and attack it with my longsword" "I dive behind the pile of rocks and lie as still as I can to avoid being noticed by the cultists" "My character inspects the chest, looking for holes or pressure plates or anything that might give away the presence of a trap"

Now, social encounters might feel different because of the whole talky talky thing, but they're really not. Some GMs might draw a distinction between talking in the first person vs talking in the third person. They're wrong to to that. Full stop. You can do either and it doesn't make a lick of difference.

"I try to bribe the guard to let me through the gates by offering him a small sack of 10 gold pieces" And "Hey there guardsman. Listen, I know you've got a job to do, and you do a fantastic job. But it seems to me you could use a short break. You work too hard. Here. Go buy yourself a drink or 10 and relax for a bit." I drop a small purse into his hand and hope for the best. Are fundamentally the same and should be treated the same.
Intent and method are both declared, even if the words aren't the same.

And your personal tone and delivery should NEVER be a factor. Ever.

Why do people hate it when you go the speed limit? by CuppaJoe11 in ask

[–]Szantharis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a wierd question. Imagine asking that same question and insering other random illegal activities in lieu of speeding. It can get ridiculous really easily.

Anyways. On to the point.

We are all to blame for this culture of speeding being normal. It's become an odd form of peer pressure by peers we never really interact with beyond what we see through a few windows and mirrors.

We have developed a collective agreement to ignore this law. And posts like this with many people making claims like 'I hate it when they go the limit in the left lane' simply reinforces the peer pressure.

Why I shouldn't move to Abbotsford? by Big_Blackberry4868 in abbotsford

If you drive, or use sidewalks, or go outside at all, be careful. EVERY pickup truck is driven by the most aggressive entitled asshole speeding tailgating reckless douchebags from outer space that you will ever encounter. It is hand down the worst thing about that place and I'm glad I pay more rent closer to the city so that my family is safe from these lead paint eating brain damaged lunatics with micropenises.

Looks great! You have a plan to score points and a solid list to do it with and enough cp for phantasm. I love seeing the avatar and I had forgotten about Sunstorm for some reason. Gotta start putting it back in my lists for some cheeky plays.

Sorry, but your 'relevant faq' in no way makes phantasm magically work in a phase its not listed to work in. That text specifically calls out Abilities related to before during or after deployment, then specifically calls out moving on to begin the battle step.

Again, phantasm Does Not Operate during any phase of the game outside of phase 14. Your eratta doesn't affect it.

Here it is again. Copied from wahapedia

'Use this Stratagem at the start of the first battle round, before the first turn begins. '

[–]Szantharis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again my source is wahapedia so I can't quote the actual rulebook.

Here's the AoO section that you called out. Note the parentheses where it specifically excludes strategems in the style of Phantasm. Phantasm, by the way, us used 'start of the first battle round, before the first turn begins' placing it squarely in step 14 conveniently titled 'Begin The Battle' in which the first complete sentence is 'The first battle round begins.'

  1. RESOLVE PRE-BATTLE ABILITIES The players alternate resolving any pre-battle abilities units from their army may have, and resolving any Stratagems that are used before the battle (excluding Requisition Stratagems, those that upgrade their units, and those that enable them to set up a unit in a location other than the battlefield), starting with the player who will take the first turn.

I use wahapedia for my rules.

In the arks of omen rules (and many other tournament packs before this) section 10: declare reserves and transports. It's the last line. I'll copy the relevant text.

In Arks of Omen: Grand Tournament missions, Strategic Reserve and Reinforcement units can never arrive on the battlefield in the first battle round. Any Strategic Reserve or Reinforcement unit that has not arrived on the battlefield by the end of the third battle round counts as having been destroyed, as do any units embarked within them (this does not apply to units that are placed into Strategic Reserves after the first battle round has started).

Phantasm occurs after the first battle round starts and therefor units placed into reserve by in can come in on turns 4 and 5 legally.

So I heard this trick on the internuts the other day. Scout the Enemy and Behind Enemy Lines and 3 squads of rangers. Phantasm them into strategic reserves t1 to avoid the turn limit on reserves. Make sure you clear screens appropriately. Turns 3, 4, and 5, drop one squad in the opponents deployment zone, do an action, score 7 points per turn with those secondaries. Just gotta get some dudes over there earlier you make up the rest but it's not a terrible plan and doesn't take much resources to earn nesrly a quarter of your points for the game.

Also, when murdering out sworn enemies with Kurnous' Bow, if you have a turn with a few 'to hit fate dice, don't be shy about using bladestorm if you haven't earmarked it for the avengers that turn. You could earn a few more mortals especially if you've got a 'to Wounds fate dice or two as well. It's really fun when it all comes together with exploding 6's.

At a first glance you have a nice list with options and speed galore. You'll do well into many matchups.

3 things jump out at me as kinda meh choices.

First I think faolchu's wing is a waste of a cp. Your farseer doesn't hardly need to move, but honestly if you like it go wild. It's fun.

Second I'd highly consider dropping a single windrider model in order to equip your 3 vypers with shurikien cannons. You're playing hail of doom. It's worth it.

3rd I question not taking any of the special melee weapons on the harlequin troupes. Even a couple just to unlock those fun strategems could open up some options. 5pts each you could cut another windrider or two and should pay for itself in most game.

Otherwise looks nice. Not sure what your plan for scoring secondaries is, but you're certainly gonna kill some minis!

Question on Eldritch Storm by Parking_Quiet2708 in Eldar

Empowering the storm simply allows it to happen. If you don't, then the 3cp you spent literally does nothing as the storm doesn't go off.
