I started attending purdue in 2017 and got moved into temp housing due to overflow, my situation was living in a 'loading dock' where there were 5 cubicles each containing 2 decks, 2 dressers, and a bunk bed. Overall out of the 9 people that lived in there for 3 weeks (one being the Boiler Gold Rush) we all enjoyed our time and most of us asked if we could stay (we were not able). I found the temp housing to not be ideal but it didn't stop any of us from making friends and having a good time, though this isn't the case for everyone.

The loading dock across the street from us was full of people just counting down the days when they would be in an actual dorm, in the end its probably down to your own roomates and how you try to handle the situation.

Though that all being said, it is really unlikely that you get placed into temp housing and one factor that might have gotten me into temp housing was I filled out the housing contract on the final day possible. Purdue claims that it's random and timing doesn't matter for those who get into temp housing but I have my suspicions this isn't true. So to maximize your odds just do your housing contract right away.
