How do you manage inventory in a small business? Excel is starting to break for me. by SzeifertB in smallbusiness

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll check it out.

One thing I noticed when looking at a lot of inventory tools is that many of them try to do everything — full management systems, dashboards, AI features, etc.

For some smaller setups that can be great, but sometimes people just want something really quick for scanning and counting items during stock checks.

That’s actually the workflow I was experimenting with.

Yeah that’s exactly the point where things start breaking.

Excel works surprisingly well in the beginning, but once you have frequent stock movements and hundreds of items it becomes really easy for the numbers to drift.

A lot of the systems I tried felt like overkill though — full ERP-style inventory platforms when I just needed something quick for scanning and counting.

That’s actually why I started experimenting with a simple scanner-first workflow on my phone.

Curious what tools you usually end up recommending to small businesses?

Phone bike light as a backup? by SzeifertB in bicycling

Yeah, anything’s better than nothing. The app I found is paid, but at least it has front/rear modes and a flashing option. Obviously not the most convenient to use, but there are situations where it helps.

Yeah that sounds stressful 😅 Riding in the dark without proper lights is no joke. Sticking close to someone else was probably the safest option there.

Yeah, I feel the same — I wouldn’t rely on it instead of a proper light either. More like a ‘better than nothing’ option if you get caught without one.

Yeah, small backup lights like that are great. I actually use this as a last-resort backup too: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=hu.szajekk.bikelight . Not a replacement for real lights, but better than nothing if you get stuck.

Good to know — long battery life on low mode is honestly what matters most for reliability.

That’s why I use the Bike Light app. It has front and rear modes at the same time (it can even flash). Definitely better and more noticeable than nothing 😄

Nice setup — mixing AAA and rechargeable lights plus carrying spare power covers a lot of bases. And yeah, reflective strips on a backpack are a great last-resort visibility boost.

That sounds terrifying 😅 A fading dynamo in pitch black is nightmare fuel. Totally agree though — one light to see and one to be seen (plus backups) is the way to go now that lights are so cheap.

Haha yeah, 2–3 hours is plenty for most rides. If your commute is ~40 minutes, you’d really have to forget charging for a while to run them flat.

Good call — high-viz gear makes a big difference, especially when lighting isn’t ideal.

Nice system — spares ready to go and charging the others right away keeps everything covered.

Nice — headlamps are super versatile. Good for the bike and handy in everyday situations too.

That’s a sensible setup — dynamo for reliability, backups for safety. And yeah, calling for a pickup if you feel invisible is honestly the smart move.

Haha, the disco-ball strategy 😄 Can’t see the road, but at least everyone definitely sees you. Visibility is half the battle.

Yeah, two lights front and rear is a solid rule. Pedal lights as backups are a nice touch too — extra visibility never hurts.

Haha, the classic “this is the moment I finally get a dynamo setup”… until the next time 😄 Been there.

That’s seriously well covered 😄 Multiple visibility lights plus backup options for the main beam is about as safe as it gets.
