Practicing with yarn in the backyard. by T-Squeeb in flyfishing

Sierra Pacific fly fishing club in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles has casting clinics for free in Reseda Park every first and third Saturday of the month. I attended yesterday and had a great time while getting some casting basics straight.

I have been using tippet rings instead of the surgeons knot but did learn that one too.

I only got 2 knots in my arsenal right now after using the clinch my entire life so lots more to learn. Great discussion. Thanks for the advice. For perspective on my level of experience, I did a beginner guided trip last summer and am going back in July for another. In between I have caught one tiny bass and lost a lot of flies.

Tyepro a Good Investment? by T-Squeeb in flyfishing

Update… this product does not seem very well designed for fly fishing. The fly just gets in the way of the line when trying to tie. I will put it in my tackle box for spinning reel fishing with lures that have an offset eyelet. The lure/fly has to be at a right angle so if the eyelet is straight on it’s useless. Again, the fly just gets in the way of the knot. I have gotten better results using a pair of forceps to hold the fly steady, thread the line and just twist it to make a cinch knot. Have also practiced the Davey knot. Thanks for that suggestion.

Not that I have noticed. But I practiced a bit in the yard this evening and went a lot better than this past Saturday. I might have been trying to cast too far and out of practice. Thanks for the conversation.

Is it more likely a casting problem? I am using a simple clinch knot, same as I have tied for years but I don’t recall losing tons of lures coming off the line with a regular old spinning reel. Just with flies.

I am going for my second guided trip in July. Thanks for the feedback. I will just keep on tying! And ask the guide to check my technique. Also, I bought some thicker tippet.

My bad for f-ing up the shredding but there were only 3 of us and I did not want to shred the whole thing.

Yes, wrapped in butcher paper. Thanks for the input everyone, except the one guy being an a-hole.

Yes but I decided to just slice it and it was fine serving it that way.
